I have a DLNA-related question: I had TVersity installed on my computer as a media server, but could never get the BX-58 to play files from its library, so I uninstalled it. Yet, it still shows up (greyed out) in the list of sources in the menu for the player. Is there any way to eliminate it as a choice I cannot make from the list of media sources? Thanks.

Is there a way to manually input the time, if I want to skip to 1:00:00 into the CD/DVD/BD?

Yes, go to Network Settings then (I think) Connection Server Settings. You can hide servers or even reset the list and re-scan the network.

Thanks! Worked just fine, and I learned a bit more about how this player works.

I started running issues playing x264 MKV 1080p files. Seems people are starting to encode videos in 10 bit instead of 8 bit and this player can't play it. Anyone else have such issue?

Also, I also had a few x264 mkv 720p 8 bit video. Can't figure out what it is, but I can play it on my windoze computer fine.

I may be in the market for another Blu-ray player that has streaming. I don't need 3D, however. I would prefer to have a choice of BOTH ethernet and wifi. Does that pretty much narrow it down to the BDP-S590 and BDP-S390 then? Also, what are the differences between the BDP-S580 and BDP-S590? It looks like the BDP-S390 simply dropped 3D, or are there more differences than that?

Edit: It looks like I found my answer: http://reviews.cnet.com/blu-ray-play...ag=mncol;lst;1

The breakdown of the important features is pretty simple:

BDP-S390: Wi-Fi + streaming apps
BDP-S590: Wi-Fi + streaming apps + 3D
BDP-S790: Wi-Fi + streaming apps + 3D + 4K upscaling + Skype (with optional camera)

It looks like BDP-S390 has BOTH ethernet and wifi, so I will start watching for sale prices around $99.99.

SACD may or may not be important to you but I would say it is a major factor between the 3XX and 5XX and 7XX.

It may also worth to note IMHO Sony cut too much cost on S590's enclosure. I got the S590 for two days and returned it as it really looks like a downgrade from S570 and got a refurb S580 instead.

I am trying to use my sony Iphone media remote
It asks me to register the app to the blu ray but I can't find where to do that on the menu
Anyone know where that registration is (it is apparently NOT the registration for the advanced features at the sony site.)

It's a pain in the ass app. To register go to network settings

True, movies and TV are slightly different aspect ratios.

But I side with the poster asking the question on this one. If he doesn't want to deal with black bars, he shouldn't have to, regardless of what the director wanted. All the cinemaphiles want full image, no doubt. But there are many (perhaps most) who would rather use up all the pixels in their display. Cropping the image a bit doesn't matter to them.

Myself, it depends on the movie I'm watching. If it is some silly rom-com, who cares, I guess I'd rather have a larger image and lose ten percent on the sides. For something like Snow Falling on Cedars, I'd want the full image.

Can you access your Itunes music on the S580 over the network? For some reason I remember a review on Amazon saying he was able to do that.

Im having a constant internet issue with mine. Tried searching for an answer but cant seem to find one. I have bx58 setup in the bedroom on wifi, it will pass the wireless connect but internet access will fail most of the time. Its been hit and miss if I do a factory reset and re-enter my info, sometimes it will connect but for the majority of the time, it wont. any ideas? I never have an issue connecting other things wirelessly, like friends computers/gaming systems.

Sounds like a new router is in your future...

Hi,

I'm new to this forum and to Blu-Ray. I recently bought the BX58 at Costco.

I've had a bit of a problem with the picture quality and I'm not sure if it's the Blu-Ray disc itself or the player.

Yesterday I watched The Debt (from RedBox) and during the opening credits, there was a scene where a character is walking in front of a rocky planter box, and there was an "aura" around the character where the rocks became a bit "splotchy," like it was having trouble decompressing or interpolating or whatever it's called (sorry I've been out of touch with the tech world lately).

I noticed this later throughout the movie, whenever there was a moving character against a relatively stationary pattern (be it venetian blinds, trees, etc).

I'd also seen this when watching a DVD, but I assumed it was just part of an upconverting process. Any tips?

It is connected directly to a 47" LG, model LG47LV5500 via HDMI.

Thanks!

Help Please!! I have S580 connected via HDMI to Panasonic 32 LCD and I couldn't get any picture/audio. However I am able to get both when connected via Component. S580 works fine with HDMI on my Vizio 47 SXVT. Tried RESET and other options mentioned in this thread, changed HDMI cable, no dice. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Nevermind. Found the problem myself. The LG TV has some "TruMotion" thing that I guess interpolates the signal. It seems to have a problem with movement against something stationary.

I was wondering if Prime Instant video had its own app under the video column or if it is part of the Amazon Instant Video App? I noticed when I selected a video to watch there is a fee to buy the episode.

Okay nevermind, I don't know how I didn't see the Prime button to choose....

I have bx58 - IMO best pic quality. I would start with comparing the tv specs and bx58 video settings. Switch off 24p output if display is not compatible, check deep color output. I have connected thru pioneer AVR to sony display so i use the best settings and it blends well with sony tv.

Thanks for the response. Again, I found the culprit -- the Tru-motion feature on the LG TV does a poor job of interpolating moving patterns. When I turned off the Tru Motion thing, the problem was gone, but the picture was jittery.

I have a BDP-S580 and I am having trouble streaming movies from my Mediatomb DLNA servers to it. It will stream MP3's just fine. I tried mkv files and then I read in the manual that it doesn't support mkv files streamed from a DLNA server. I then tried avi files and they never play either. Any thoughts as to what I am doing wrong?
Manual is wrong. I have no problem streaming mkv from serviio.

This. Serviio is probably the best DLNA solution for this player. I could not get TVersity or XBMC to stream any video, but Serviio had no problem, even with the lastest firmware.
Has anyone setup Serviio on a Centos linux server? I have it up and running but I am trying to figure out how to specify what directories my media is in.

new version of firmware m07.r.0620 (I'm at 615). Wondering what's new.

(edit) And I have to ask, as some people have mentioned they're on older, pre-cinvia (sp?) firmwares, how are you able to utilize things like netflix via older fw? I keep getting prompted to upgrade to 620.
I had to break down and load the new firmware, otherwise, the internet apps wouldn't work.

Personally, I have many other devices (TiVo, PS3, etc) that are far more superior(5.1 DD sound...) to my S580 in regards to Netflix and such. I just use those. My BD player is strictly that...a BD player.
Noticed on the Sony website for the upgrade this little disclaimer:
"Note: This upgrade includes Cinavia™ content protection technology. Information about Cinavia technology is provided at the Cinavia Online Consumer Information Center at: http://www.cinavia.com"

So any rips of movies with Cinavia protection are now toast. Really annoying because the player will down-res blue-rays over component output (which I still have) but didn't down-res MKV files. Was going to dodge this update, but sounds like I can't. UGH. Maybe time to retire the old Panny 34" tube. Love that set...

Ah. Well that at least clears things up for me. Thanks.
