The problem I am seeing is a major amount of video "flicker" or digital white noise being displayed whenever in the menu level of the player or a disk. Interestingly enough, playback of content from a disk, whether Blu-ray or DVD works perfectly fine. I made a simple video from my phone which you can see at http://www.eph3.com/IMG_0920.MOV.
I tried several changes to see the behavior would change. I've tried different HDMI cables, different HDMI inputs into the AV processor, disconnected wired ethernet and connected straight into the TV. None of these changes made a difference. I opened a chat session with Sony Support yesterday and the two suggestions I got from them were to reduce the video resolution and also unplug the device to force a hard reset. The reset didn't do anything, but reducing the resolution seemed to work, but isn't a solution. Personally, I'm suspicious of the latest firmware which was released mid-May (M07.R.0620).
Anyone else seen this problem? And if so, what did you do to fix it? Does anyone know if it is possible to downgrade the firmware?
Thanks!
eph3
I am using R.0620 firmware but it is BX58 from costco. No problems like that. It might be either faulty installation of firmware or hardware fault. Try to install the same firmware again thru usb and see.

The experiment would be to try playing some of your multi-channel hi def content with the stereo downmix option turned on, and report back whether the resulting 2 channel PCM output has the original bit depth and sample rate or if its reduced to 44/16 or 48/16 as part of the downmix process.
Also, if anyone else has experience getting hi def 2ch PCM audio out of the Toslink, please feel free to share!
I tried using downmix surround to stereo, no effect in the flac file playback. it plays at 5.1 24 bits 96. tried hdmi auto to pcm, same no change. The downmix is only for dolby surround and not for other files.
Sony is converting 5.1 flac to 5.1 pcm and sends it to receiver. i have not figured out a way to change the settings.

I tried to reinstall the latest firmware as you suggested, but the device reported back "Already updated.". I also found the original firmware the player came with, downloaded it and attempted to downgrade to that version but the device reported the same "Already updated." message. I suspected it would do that, and sure enough, the device will not let you downgrade firmware once a later version has been installed. I searched on Sony's Support site to see if they provide any instructions for downgrading and this is what I found:

"As part of the normal operation of the product, the BD player will not permit a system software (firmware) downgrade. Once the system has been upgraded to a new system software, it cannot be downgraded even if you have an older software on a usb drive."

If the problem I am seeing is from a software bug in the latest firmware, then I will have to wait for Sony to fix the problem.

Has anyone figured out the Yamaha remote code for the BDP-S580? I have an RX-V473 and I cannot get the receiver's remote to control the BD player (I would be happy with just the ability to turn it off). Just seeing if anyone else found it...

One of these codes should work: 2004, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2014, 2015, 2023, 2026, 2027, 2052, 2068, 2069, 2070, 2071, 2074, 2075, 2084, 2085, 2087, 2168, 2171, 2208, 2210, 2211, 2258, 2273, 2284, 2285, 2312, 2313, 2314, 2315, 2318, 2319, 2466

Has anyone been having trouble playing newer Universal blu-rays on their s580? Earlier this week I could not get American Reunion to play - it would stick on the Universal loading icon. Today I tried to play Jaws and had the same problem. Jaws eventually did play after repeated pressing of the remote's menu button while stuck on the loading screen, however, all of the discs commands were very sluggish, and I even had trouble getting the disc to eject after the film.

Both discs played fine on my Ps3 and aside from these 2 Universal discs, everything else plays fine on the s580. The firmware is up to date.

if your firmware is up to date then make sure you have at least a 2gd thumbdrive plugged into the back of thr player if you have bd live enabled, or you can disables bd live completely,
post #702 of 760
Is there a benefit of BD live? I still don't know what it's for and I have it disabled-same with gracenote for when I out a disc in.

Ha--not sure if this was meant to be sarcastic (I too have the manual containing the codes). It turned out to be 2075, which for some reason didn't work the first time I tried it.

Hope somebody here can help as my research to date has not solved the problem. I am streaming to the BDP-S580 from Plex Media Server and cannot get rewind and fast-forward to work. The files are in mkv format but I have tried the mp4 format as well. Though I get the fast-forward indicator (1,2, or 3 with double arrows), nothing ever happens and when I resume play, the movie starts over at the beginning. I have seen this issue reported a number of times, but the most popular answer is to update firmware, which I've already done (currently at .0624) so i'm not sure what else to do, besides trying another media server, assuming the server is the problem and not the player.

If anyone has run across this and found a solution, I'd appreciate a share. Thanks.

Mine cannot fast forward or rewind MP4-compressed MKV files either. Sometimes it's a stretch just to get them to play. Not sure about MP4 files. I'm using a Twonky media server.

I can tell you that my 2012 LG TV (a 55LM7600) handles these files no problem, with much less buffering time. So really the BDP-S580 is just a weak performer in this area.

Well with all the other streaming options offered I counted on the player being more flexible, but maybe I haven't experimented enough here. Are there other file formats that may offer rewind and ff functionality on this player? Is it in the transcoding done by the media server i.e. would a different server yield a different result? Your point is well taken about having the TV handle them directly. Assuming there isn't anything viable through the BD player, I can investigate my Pioneer PRO-111FD's Home Media Gallery and see if that may be an option.
It can rewind and fast forward divx and xvid avi's, and MP3s. Beyond the file formats, the browser is nicer on the TV. Definitely give the TV a try. I had ARC issues so I ordered an optical cable to pass audio back to my receiver. Simpler that way.

Please see newer post below. I was unable to figure out how to delete this post. Sorry.

it seems the youtube videos always run at the lowest resolution setting?

thanks,

Robby

Hello,

When I access HD YouTube videos (720p or 1080i) through the YouTube app on my Sony BluRay player (BDP-S580), the video playback quality is clearly not HD. The resolution seems to be limited to 480p. This is made much more evident when connecting my laptop to the TV and playing the exact same YouTube video. The video playback quality through the YouTube website is far superior than the YouTube app on my Sony BluRay player.

I believe Post #629 refers to the same issue. Has anyone been able to resolve this issue?

Please note: I have the latest firmware installed on the Sony BluRay player, high-speed Internet access and using an HDMI connection between the BluRay player and my TV. This issue exists only with the YouTube app. The Netflix app on the Sony BluRay player provides HD video quality playback without any issue.

I look forward to receiving any helpful feedback.

Thank you.

How is the drive formatted? (NTFS, ExFAT, Apple, etc.) Some people have reported problems with some formats.

from factory? NTFS but I also tried to format it to exFAT - no case mad.gif

I have a problem with my 8 GB flash drive that won't work regardless of the formatting, yet my 32 GB works fine in FAT - both drives from Sandisk.

BDP-BX58 randomly turns itself on sometimes

love this dvd player, except for this quirk. and i can't figure out the pattern as to when it happens exactly either. i know it often happens when i turn it off and then about 1-2 minutes later, it will turn itself on again. it's a bit creepy...LOL.

Have you ruled out the possibility that another device's remote is inadvertently turning it on? I ask because sometimes when I hit the power button on the player's remote, my cable box interprets it as a "0" and when I switch back to cable, the channel has been changed. So it appears that this remote's signals are common to other remotes.
^^^

You need to turn off bravia sync in the player and in your tv. It's being turned on via HDMI, probably when you change inputs.

This piece of garbage died yesterday. I will never again buy a Sony product. From the very first day it's build quality screamed its not gonna last. But just 14 months? Shame on you Sony. When it worked its picture quality was pretty good but most of the time the damn thing wouldn't play MKV files, subtitles not even WAV files! Not recommend.
Not sure if it works in Argentina but at least in the US most credit cards will extend the warranty past 14 mos and replace it.
Have any of you been having problems streaming Vudu? I'm able to on every device EXCEPT, my S580, which plays video for about 3 seconds, no sound, then says a network condition is preventing, blah, blah, even though its wired, Internet is fine, and no other device is having an issue.
try unplugging the unit for about a minute and plug it back in
