need help on speakers for large room, 4-5k budget

complete newbie who currently has been using logitech 5.1 computer speakers with their included subwoofer for large great room who finally has the budget to upgrade substantially to better system

great room is 20x25ft with 16 ft high ceilings open to the kitchen in the back and open to one side to the foyer

primary use is home theater, watching movies and TV. being able to hear dialogue is key although my wife and I also like to listen to music.

my budget is 4-5k for the Front left/front right/center/and rears (which would need to be ceiling speakers). the fronts and centers cannot be floor standing because of the way the room is set up and would need to be bookshelfs.

if you could be specific in your recommendations since I am completely new to this with:
1)brand
2)model
3)estimated price

*also can anybody suggest other than this forum a magazine or website for newbies like me where I can do research for speaker/receiver/sub reviews*

Magazines hardly give bad ratings, most ofv them are as bad as consumer report.

$4-5k I would look at a combination of

Onkyo TX-NR3008

Paradim Monitor 11, cc390, and adp's surrounds dsp3400

Also check out hsu vtf-15

SVS MT Series and subs.

You can get em used the Definitive BP7002 towers and CLR3000.

There are a few threads in this forum that discuss them.

For rear surrounds, individuals recommend ceiling speakers from SpeakerCraft and Triad.

At some point, you will consider a subwoofer (or two)

I'd second JTR speakers. That's a huge room to fill so high efficiency speakers would be helpful. I'd recommend the Single 8 HT though. It fits your "bookshelf" requirement, it's easier to drive (8 ohm instead of 4 ohm), and it's cheaper. JTR also makes a wall mounted surround speaker called the Slanted 8.

Good choice, but the JTR's require subs, which puts them significantly out of budget for the OP. As mentioned, a 5.2 CHT system is within budget and is an excellent choice for that size room.

Actually three S8's across the front from JTR would only be 2.4k which would leave him 2.6k for in-ceiling rears (cht system dont have) he specified and a sub or two. Maybe look at getting 2 Ed A7S-450 subs for 1.6k delivered and an in-ceiling product from Triad or Paradigm or Definitive Technology or... well you get the point.

The original post said $4-5k for 5 speakers. I assumed the sub budget was separate. Even so... Five Single 8's is 4 grand, that leaves a grand for a sub.
