While it is true the MS wants Xbox to be the entertainment hub, watching movies via BR is not what MS wants. MS wants you to download the movie from Zune or stream it from Netflix. That way they get revenue on every movie you watch. Watching BR movie does not generate ANY revenue for MS and in fact, it costs MS money on royalties.
Some of you seem to believe that MS will make money by selling more Xbox if they included a BR drive, but Nintendo has demonstrated that this is false. The game console does not have to support a popular movie disc format to sell a ton of devices. What little extra sale they may get will be negated by royalties MS would have to pay on EVERY Xbox. This goes vehemently against what MS does in every other business line.
MS could not care less about BR support. Not sure how many different ways I can say that.
I'm only arguing for BR support because IMO it would be the best option for me. I'm hoping there is, I don't have a hard belief that there is or isn't going to be one. Until there's a more recent statement by someone at MS against BR in the xbox 3, I'll keep hoping for it.
If they want to continue to be an entertainment hub, they need the ability to play BR. Having DVD only is going to be archaic. I won't and will never buy or rent movies through zune, and I'm betting there's other people that share my view. Limiting the system to only play movies through zune is a bad move IMO.
edit: it's not only BR movies, the medium for which games will go, if they plan on actual 1080p games you need higher bandwidth, higher capactiy. BR is there, it plays movies, the other options don't play movies. Well, they probably do play movies, but there's no movie companies going to support another format now that BR is established.
