Yup. In addition to the fact that the media lawyers and executive ended up taking over the hardware guys. SONY BMG/Pictures involvement in Sonys downfall can't be said enough. DRM, proprietary formats, focusing on legacy and bad synergy. Sony used to command a premium for high end products that served consumer needs, but to take every dime they could they went to Chinese production and quality dropped severely. At the same time they worried about following market trends because of how it effect might their large film and music investments, so you ended up with them forcing their vision on the consumer.
So they missed out on the MP3 market. Their phones followed nokia instead of apple, so they're playing catch up in the phone market. On and on. Hell, where's the homebrew app/game "market" for PS3/PSV? (also something MS needs to do btw). Their LCD market flatlined, because they were commanding high end prices for products only marginally better (if at all) than budget options.
I'm quite jaded with Sony right now, because there's good reason to be. Only reason I still stick around is SCEA/SCEE/SCEJ are some of the few areas of the company doing things right, and investing in (sometimes risky) game genres I tend to love.
I almost wonder if we'd all be better off if the PS3 division was spun off and was allowed to do it's own thing ala Nintendo

The Americans, Koreans & Chinese have locked up all of the popular consumer technology. I cant even think of the last time I've seen a tech product labeled "made in Japan". You can walk clean thru Best Buy.. and not find a single category storewide where Sony is the leader. The PS3 is about all they have left.. and its the last place console as far the US is concerned. Theres no doubt, all of their competitors know already know this.. and dont want any part of this sinking ship.
Apples riding this high right now, but history has shown us the game of thrones is perilous. Without Jobs, and as complacency and risk mitigation leech into a company, innovation stalls in the name of brand protection. You really, really need to weed that out; but it's easy for so many entrenched companies to falter to it, since it's easy street for self serving executives. It's called the business cycle, and those that don't inviolate (or choose not to) die.
But to your comment, everything is made in china now. Apple is an America product, assembled in China. The problem isn't necessarily their capture on the production market, but the company's focus on QA. I'll say from experience Sonys been failing in that aspect, just to keep margins higher. They're trying to have it both ways, they want to be between the niche market and the broad bargain basement sales. It's simply unobtainable because there's no market there. They're going to have to either go back to high end niche, or start expanding into much larger, lower quality but cheaper production.
