Microsoft fires the first shot in the "NEXT" generation.... - Page 129

I don't see how that 2nd link has anything to do with gaming. They took VR, that's been around for many years, and applied it to a completely unrelated field, with good results. That doesn't mean gaming is going VR.

can you imagine if Dolby Atmos came to the next Xbox? minimum 32-speaker setup... our family rooms would be a murderous place...

No that isnt what I was talking about. A couple days ago there were news reports talking about sales are down 70% over last year and in their earnings report R&D funds have shot through the roof. Google news XBOX

We met with Dolby in Hollywood last week, they were very mum on any home Atmos implementations. There's only 14 theaters world wide right now capable of showing Atmos movies. I think having it in this next generation is an impossibility really, maybe the generation after that. It would / will fundamentally change how theathers and home theaters are designed.

I liked the demo so much I went to the Arclight Hollywood to see Chasing Mavericks. Crappy ass movie but the sound was quite good. Not as good as the demo material we saw (including POTApes) but still worth my time.

Even if the console supported it, receivers aren't going to be able to drive that many speakers. I def want to see them come out with no less than 11.1 though, which is doable nowadays, I expect HDMI 1.5 will be able to directly output it without any matrixing.

Really, they should just go back to fully abstracted 3D sound APIs like they had back in the 90s, and let the OS downmix it to whatever number of channels the user has.

Atmos home. It's as simple as SLI ing multiple receivers. biggrin.gif
post #3847 of 7006
yeah, I know Atmos wouldn't be in this next gen of systems. I was just thinking about the amusement of trying to set up a 32-speaker setup in a family room.

Could you point me in a direction where I can find info on this technique? I have a few extra AVRs sitting around, so something like this could be an interesting project!

Still not shabby for an old girl. I bet MS and Sony are nervous watching how WiiU and PC, Win 8, Surface sales are performing this Season.

interesting video on a lot of the stuff we've talked about here and on other gaming threads.

Ok guys, sorry, coming to this discussion a little late, but has there been any real information sent out about how this thing is going to look? Or definitive release dates? It seems most things point towards the name of XBOX 720... just seeing if there is something I'm missing.

No. No. And no.

Lots of rumors, but nothing definitive. And it will continue to only be rumors until the thing is officially announced. Signs continue to point toward a late 2013 launch. Outside of that, rumors as to name, specs, and features have been all over the place.

Thanks for the update!

Has anyone posted about the Xbox 8 thing? It's from July, but Microsoft bought domains for xbox8.org and xbox8.us. There's some guy in China who bought xbox8.com, but MS filed arbitration against him. It could be that MS just wants to defend the brand, so they'd fight any xbox#.com.

Then again, with Windows 8, Xbox 8 would fit, and IGN is speculating that it would end up being Xbox Infinity when the 8 turns on its side.

I assume I'm way behind on this though and everyone reading this thread already knows about it.

I think the Xbox8 rumors more have to deal with the rumored Xbox tablet rather than the console.

Although the name is like the least important thing of all....I really like the name Xbox infinity, with the 8 turning on its side. I hope that's what they go with...it's better than vita, orbis, or any other crazy stuff Sony is coming up with.

Rumors suggest that next gen games will be shown at the VGA's, but if they can't reveal the system(s) it's coming to, don't you think it will be a bit awkward ? I mean, I know that Watch Dogs and Star Wars 1313 both might be next-gen launch titles, a year from now, and they were both shown at e3, but that announcement was kind of weird as well. I just think it's going to be a bit weird until they officially announce this thing. Looking back at the Xbox 360, it seems that it wasn't offically announced until the MTV thing... right ? That was like mid May. Do you think we'll have to wait till mid May 2013 ?
There's always CES in January. They could still do their own thing any time between that and e3 in June.

Can graphics really get any better from here on out? I guess only 3D games that emerse you into the environment would be worthy...

Graphics can absolutely get much, much better than they are now. Human faces in the current gen are barely as expressive as muppets.

I'd say they can get better but not sure if the next gen will be that big of a deal..

A second tablet?! Don't they have enough trouble trying to get Surface off the ground?

I LOVE the name Xbox Infinity, but it might also be confusing for people? They'll wonder if it's Xbox 8 or Xbox Infinity. And it's also a long word! But, so is three-sixty. And a 360 is one circle, infinity is a second circle tacked onto it. I've cracked the code!
if it's Xbox Infinity for the next Xbox, I like that name. And it fits in with the Xbox8 domains since you can't exactly type infinity on a keyboard except for the turned-sideways 8.

But where do you go after Infinity? biggrin.gif

I agree that they shouldn't make an Xbox tablet.

But the thing holding back the Surface RT is that it runs Windows RT and isn't compatible with your old Windows software. And the apps marketplace for Windows RT isn't big enough yet. But Surface Pro with Windows 8 is a nobrainer. Being able to carry around Photoshop and other Windows software is very tempting. But Surface Pro doesn't come out until January.

But even then, I think there are plenty of great contenders. I played with a bunch of Windows 8 laptops over Black Friday. The Samsung ATIV is mighty sexy. Comes in both Atom and i5 models. A great form when used as a tablet (undocked from the keyboard/trackpad). A great form when docked with the keyboard and good trackpad. Heck, you can use it exactly like a notebook as it folds like one and has all the ports. A lot of interesting models coming out. The sliding touchscreen on the Sony machines was very cool (though the machine was like a brick due to the metal body).

I'm hearing a lot of people are also waiting for the Lenovo Carbon Touch. That thing has a carbon fiber body. So even though it carries a huge touch screen, its weight is tiny. Then again, it's a touchscreen laptop with no tablet option.

Microsoft and Sony both should name their next units Xbox and Playstation. The cycles are far enough to avoid confusion.

Microsoft is the most vague out of all of them. It’s slated to be the most powerful out of all the next gen consoles about 4 to 6 times more powerful than Wii U and 2 to 3 times more powerful than Playstation Omni. The project has gone through many name iterations and will not be decided on until shortly before it’s E3 unveiling. Microsoft is also running into manufacturing issues and developers not having games done on time so instead of delaying the launch to Summer 2014, they are thinking of “soft launching” it Holiday November 2013 and then have a full blow out in the summer. All units will come with Kinect 2 built in which can track up to four people, all objects in the living room, clothing, face structure and fingers. It can also understand different voices and has its own PPU. In 2014, Microsoft will introduce the “LiveWall”, a omni-projection unit that will allow game environments to be projected nearly 360 degrees around the user. Using Kinect 2, they have two demos of one that is a battlefield RTS and one that is a kung fu game with guys attacking all around. The LiveWall can also project different images on the wall, so people can play different games on different walls. Microsoft is prepared to champion this unit as a cheaper and more effective alternative to wearing a “goofy stupid VR headset” to combat Sony’s Omniviewer while Sony is going to point out the low resolution quality and the lack of privacy. The system is going to be very expensive in the $499 range so Microsoft is planning on using a remolded X-Box Live (Possibly renamed X-Box Life) to offer a Pro (Gold) subscription two or three-year contract to sell the unit at $300 – $399. The final goal with the tech is to shrink the system on a chip down enough so it can be put into tablets, PCs and Smart TVs so that all devices are X-Box ready.
