Microsoft fires the first shot in the "NEXT" generation.... - Page 162

They're going to ease it in. They're already allowing online only games (destiny). More and more games will try it over the next few years. Eventually it'll either become non-controversial, or such a sales killer that they give up. I suspect the pros will outweigh the cons for the majority of people - they just need to produce a few amazing games that couldn't be done offline, and manage launches better....then people will be on board.

I haven't really been reading through this thread much, but has there been any discussion about the expected exclusives that MS will have for their box ? Realistically, what valuable IP does Microsoft really have right now ?

Certainly, Halo would most likely be considered their most valuable IP, but they just came out with Halo 4 on the 360. Another Halo game for the new system anytime before Holiday 2014 would probably be a bad idea for MS. Maybe they could take Halo 4 and make a special enhanced Infinity version or something. If they could have Halo 4 running in 1080p at 60 frames, plus a bunch more high res textures and stuff like that, it wouldn't be too bad an idea. I haven't really played Halo 4 yet, so that would kind of appeal to me.

Gears of War is their next most valuable IP. But Gears has been beaten to death. They need to give that game a rest. Hopefully no new Gears till at least 2015.

Forza is a big game for Microsoft, and having a racing game at launch is always a good idea, but at the same time, do you really want to launch with such an in-depth sim type racer ? Wouldn't a Project Gotham type racer be a better idea for launch, and a more in-depth game like Forza coming later ? I know Sony has their DriveClub, but I think that might be a bit of a mistake as well. I think a more arcade type racer is a better idea for launch than a super in-depth sim type racer.

After Halo, Gears and Forza, I think MS's stable of games weakens substantially. The next biggest one for me is Crackdown, but the problem with Crackdown is the 2nd game really ruined the legacy of the first game. I still think if MS had a really strong 3rd version of the game ready for their system, it could be a really huge thing for them, but I wonder if they think the brand has already been killed by that horrible second game. They have their two big Kinect games of course. Dance Central and Kinect Sports. Obviously, they would have new versions of these games to show off the improvement in Kinect 2. Then you have Fable and Alan Wake. Both of those franchises are kinda meh to me...

So, let's look at their primary franchises again:

1. Halo - way too soon for another Halo game, but could we see a Halo 4 special edition ? I think it would be a pretty good idea, hopefully it was in development alongside the 360 version, and it won't be some crappy rush job. Some will say that most people that are into Halo already played 4 and wouldn't be interested. We'll see...

2. Gears of War - DEFINITELY way too early for another Gears of War. Hell, it's too early for Judgement.

3. Forza - They might have this for launch, but I think it makes more sense for the "next" holiday.

4. Crackdown - This is my No.1 hope for launch. Of course, the big question is, would Microsoft take a risk on it considering the bad will from the 2nd game ? Has the franchise been ruined by the sub par 2nd game, and who would be developing this for MS anyways ? (certainly not Ruffian, lol)

5. Dance Central - Bank on it. Virtually guaranteed to launch with the system

6. Kinect Sports - Again, a given.

7. Fable - I'm not sure what to say about Fable. It wouldn't be bad for MS to have a halfway decent RPG / Adventure type game for their new system. I know that Molyneux is gone, but does MS still own Lionhead ? If they do, then you gotta figure they are working on something. Probably a better idea for "next" holiday.

8. Alan Wake - I think there are rumors that Remedy has a next-gen Alan Wake up and running. Makes sense. Remedy has always been a cutting edge type developer that wants to try to push things to the limits. I wouldn't be the least bit shocked to see them with a next-gen Alan Wake game. Not sure that it would be a system selling type IP for MS though... I guess a poor man's exclusive Silent Hill type game is better than nothing.

Other possibilities:

1. Perfect Dark Zero - really ? I mean... really ?

2. Project Gotham Racing - I'm not sure who would actually be developing this game for MS, but I think this makes more sense at launch than Forza.

3. Banjo-Kazooie - Honestly, I think MS could have taken much better advantage of this IP, than they have so far.

4. Viva Piñata - I suppose anything is possible. Just not sure that this game ever resonated enough with a wide enough spectrum of the gaming audience.

5. Shadowrun - Does MS still have the rights to this ?

6. Mech Assault - Remember this game ?

7. Crimson Skies -

8. Midtown Madness -

9. Azurik: Rise of Perathia 2 - ? - lol

10. Fuzion Frenzy 3 - ?

AZURIK 720 - MAKE IT HAPPEN!

I am still playing this arcade game as a break from Blops 2. I LOVE it!! But I like mech games and tower defense so the combo of them just makes sense!

There have been rumors flying around that MS has been getting companies to start working on new exclusive IP's for the next box launch.

The real question is who is going to succeed with an MMO this generation?

It would be interesting to see if an MMO would take advantage of the always on always connectedthat is rumored. I know I wouldn't mind that if I was not playing an MMO and they did an update that it would automatically patch to the latest version on this. With Guild Wars 2 I am not to sure how they could get that game to work on a console with the contoller, but it would interesting to see how that would work.

Well the new Bugie game is supposed to be MMO like game with a persistant online enviroment if I recall correctly. Looks interesting.

I cant wait for them to finally release the specs of this thing. I am so tired of reading rumors of the same year+ old document. I just want to play new games and have a dashboard that isnt painful to navigate

The Game Developer's Conference starts today thru March 29th. Expo dates are the 27th - 29th. Will we finally get some info from MS? Man, I really hope so. Even just the date of their reveal would be nice.

Its not about reading it, it is about every online news source re-reporting it over and over again. I google xbox 720 (Stupid name but that is what people put on everything) and a story that is a couple hours old is reporting the same crap. I want more info!

I think we're going to be waiting a very long while for a dashboard that isn't painful to navigate wink.gif
post #4845 of 7006
since the OS for the next Xbox will be multitasking and since there's a lot more RAM available, that'll solve a lot of problems with the sluggishness of the dashboard when it was loading. right now, the worst time to use the dashboard is when you dump out of the game. and that's because you can have to dump everything and reload the dashboard. it's practically a reboot of the system. the xbox invented the term "dashboarding." using the Xbox during that time is like trying to use your PC upon while Windows and all your background processes and programs are still loading in. painful.

on another note, it looks like Call of Duty is going next-gen only... great way to move consoles. gamers follow the games. though I don't know how you call it Call of Duty: Ghosts and not have people compare it to Ghost Recon.

LoL I would rather deal with the Current dashboard for two more generations than watch Olympus has fallen again. Seriously it terrible beyond words.

I have to agree with sublime, 8GB of RAM will push a lot of things very fast. And COD... I will hold out for BF4. I have played COD for far too many years, dont feel like playing it on a new console.

And MS is being awefully sneaky this time. I think they are going to do what Samsung and Apple do with their phones. Announce and a month later release. Huge buzz will help move consoles. The downside? You piss off developers because they cant talk about their product until the system is officially released.

This would be the worst thing for MS or any console company to announce a month prior and claim a launch a month later. I don't know why anyone would think this would work and compare this to a smartphone release.
It will work because if it were to come out tomorrow I would buy it. Millions of other people like me would as well...

I know there are some people that save for a console but I am financially stable enough to go out and buy a $400 console. Again so are many others. And it is not like they will have 10M available for launch so the people that can afford them will be able to buy them and the people that have to save will have some time to when the next couple shipments come in.

Seems like it would be AWESOME to me LoL.

MS is still selling goods and services like almost everyone else still. Apple is selling a brand and an experience, even as BS as some think it is.

It be a dumb move.

Nope, not even close..............dumbest move in the business is being 100% proprietary, that's what had their fearless leader begging for change @ a cocktail party.

Guess you missed that "metro" is pretty much the same across all platforms? Missed the integration? The surface? Yeah, thought so.
guess physical media is going to eventually get eclipsed just like how MP3s rule over CDs...

also goes to show how cheap PC people are! :P
I remember when this current console generation was revving up and people talked about the discrepancy between PC and console prices for games. which the industry big wigs replied that because of the high rate of piracy on the PC and what PC owners are willing to spend for games, they had to charge appropriately. so it's almost as if the consoles were subsidizing the PC industry.

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2013-03-29-digital-game-sales-growing-33-percent

excerpts:

Digital game and downloadable content sales are growing at a rate of 33 percent year over year in the US and EU. Spending on games in China, which is almost all digital, is projected to grow over 10 percent annually for the next three years.

Liam Callahan, games industry analyst from NPD, presented some interesting data on digital game content across the USA, UK, France and Germany. Together those four countries accounted for $10 billion in sales for 2012, with a US total of $5.9 billion followed by the UK at $1.7 billion, Germany with $1.4 billion and France with $1 billion. In the US, digital content now accounts for 40 percent of the total spend on games, up from 28 percent in 2010.

The annual spending on games in the USA for new retail games in 2012 was $7.1 billion, which represented about 48 percent of the total of $14.8 billion spent on games. That's right, the retail market for new games is now less than the combination of other revenue. The other revenue, according to NPD estimates, includes used games at $1.59 billion, digital games and DLC at $2.22 billion, subscriptions at $1.05 billion, social network gaming at $544 million, game rentals at $198 million, and $2.11 billion in mobile game sales. New retail game sales dropped over 22 percent from 2011, and used games dropped 17.1 percent. Digital full games and DLC combined grew 33.9 percent for the year, with subscriptions gaining 12.9 percent and mobile games growing 10.4 percent.

While Europe and the US had similar percentages of the population that owned mobile phones and played games, the amount of people who paid for mobile games were substantially different. In the USA, only 27 percent of gamers paid, while 40 percent of the players in Europe paid for mobile games. As far as time spent gaming, though, people in the UK, France and Germany all spent more time playing than people in the US did; in the case of the UK there was a 15 percentage point difference in favor of the UK. Average spending in the UK was nearly double that of the US ($16 instead of $9).

Man, not to dis or anything, but things are kinda boring on the Microsoft side of things right now.

This wait is excruciating. We are now in the month of April. If there really is a conference in April, don't you think we'd have heard the date by now ? I know there was another rumor that it was rescheduled to May. May seems like kinda weird timing.

I hear ya, I'm curious to see how close the rumors are to being true. Though I have to wonder that when MS does break the news that they may have the actual console playing the games and not just show a controller and video.

They announced the 360 in early to mid may. It did not seem that odd then, and it does not seem that odd now. They have a ton of time and events to talk about the new console between May and Oct/Nov (a guess on the release date)

I heard April 26th is the date. I guess we will find out soon enough. However, we are right on top of E3, so even if they don't hold an event this month, we are still right on the cusp.
