Microsoft fires the first shot in the "NEXT" generation.... - Page 176

Why does it have to be at 10 in the morning? I am seriously considering running home for the presentation and then coming back to work when it's done.

Edit: If it's 10 PT, then it will be right around my lunch. I will just go home and watch it so I can discuss it in the afternoon. I think it is smart that they are putting it on Spike. At least I don't have to worry about streaming it and hoping for it to turn out good. I can watch it on my HD tv. Bring on the future!

Yeah, it's 10 pacific.

I'm gonna get even less done than usual at work that day. Why couldn't they just do it at prime time?
I was really hoping it wouldn't be that week. I will be on a golf trip so I will have to have my phone all charged up so I can watch it on the course! I guess there could be a worse conflict to try to work through. biggrin.gif

Didn't see this posted:

The CW app brings full episodes streaming to Xbox 360 a day after they air
Quote:
The latest entertainment app to launch for the Xbox 360 comes from The CW (the relationship has now come full circle), bringing shows like Arrow, Supernatural and The Vampire Diaries to the console. Special to this offering is that it will stream full episodes the day after they air on network TV, and will not require users to verify a cable or satellite subscription.

If MS can secure more deals of this type and figure out how to organize it so that the episodes can be easily found, that would be a big plus.

Yeah, I plan on taking a long lunch and watching the whole thing, then when I get back spending a lot of my day posting here.

Pretty much. I just hope I can catch a good stream on my phone, that I can pause if I need to.

I'm not going to try to turn this into a pissing war, but does anyone else think it's a small win that they will actually be broadcasting it on tv instead on online only? While sales have caught up, Xbox as a brand has the bigger mind share in America and I think that this trend will continue next gen, as long as they don't do anything stupid with the console.

If it they did it in Primetime they would be competing for eyeballs during the May television sweeps months. Also by doing it during the day they get their console announcement in the local afternoon news cycle.

Yeah, this makes a lot of sense. I know a lot of shows are coming back on the air around that time. That's what also makes sense about the date. They announce, and then most likely will start to advertise during all the new shows that are on. Start getting it out there and getting people interested in it. Like I said, they have the mind share. So the new xbox could be a hot item for Christmas this year.

that app is pretty good! I cut the TV cord at my house. no cable, no satellite. and I was able to watch full episodes with that app. unfortunately, it doesn't have all the episodes. but i thought the app would check for a TV subscription like the other TV apps.

Plus Europe is still awake.

When Sony did theirs at 8pm EST, that prob had more to do with Japan being awake then to make American gamers with jobs happy.

It will be interesting to see the knee jerk reaction to the announcement. I don't usually fall into that stuff, but I did with Sony's and the leaks of always online. Now as we get further away from the Sony announcement and I resume my Xbox gaming, I find myself less interested in the PS4. I think that this will be in MS' favor. People will see a system that will be a lot like the PS4 in the specs, with the PS4 being a little more powerful and say "Yeah, but I know the Xbox. All my friends and family play on Xbox, so I will stick with it". Even if MS comes out at a little bit higher price. I know that I expect it, with Kinect bundled in with the console.
Can you pre-order the PS4 anywhere yet? If not, it may work out to MS' benefit to have waited. On the 21st they could reveal the look of the console itself plus the price and next day start taking pre-orders. Could be a case of what is fresh in people's minds will sell more. Maybe it's because I'm not much of a Sony person but the only thing I really remember about their reveal is that you can share your gameplay with anyone.

wonder if there will be commercials on the TV broadcast. I'd prefer to watch it on my TV, but I don't want any dumb talking heads talking over anything and I don't want commercials interrupting, so I'll have the stream ready. Luckily, I'm off that day.

In the beginning of this console generation I was a Huge 360 fan. I bought 360 in early 2006 (as my friends were getting 360's). Really enjoyed the 360 and it's online functionality. I finally purchased a PS3 in mid 2007 (for Socom and GOW) and liked the PS3 but hated their online. I will say for me the PS3 had the Best game this gen (Demon's Souls, played it 8x) and it's still a very good Blu-Ray player. I ended up getting my Daughter a PS3 (11 years old at the time) as she LOVES LBP and COD. I thought Gears was the Best MSFT Exclusive game. Loved MP for Gears (all 3 games).

In 2010 I decided to jump into PC gaming as I heard you could use a 360 Controller and Steam had AAA titles for alot less. Well suffice it to say I have not used my 360 since Gears 3 and ONLY use my PS3 to watch Blu-Ray's (I will get Last Of US). After seeing the Graphical improvement on the PC, Free Mods, Free MP , Steam Sales (I have not paid full price for a game in 3 years. Even AAA titles I get Dirt Cheap with the Sales Steam has) etc. etc. I just find it hard to go back to console gaming. I would rather take the money I would use to buy a console and just get a new GPU (I have a Sapphire 7850 2GB OC edition). I am thinking of just upgrading to a 7950 3GB here soon, but my 7850 plays all games on Ultra/Very High just fine. I play on my 60" HDTV via HDMI with a 360 wireless controller and it runs just fine. I have a Wii U for my Mario, Zelda, Metroid fix and I MAY get a PS4 IF Sony integrates the PS4 with the Vita properly (I love my Vita for Mobile Gaming). I just don't see a need for the Xbox this gen. To me MSFT seems like they are not interested in games anymore (their exclusives are few and far between now) and just want to be a Media Device for the home (I already have my PC hooked up and don't need that). I bought a Kinect and Rarely if EVER used it. Why would I want to have it connected to just play games.Just my 2 Cents
post #5267 of 7006
It's funny, because not even a week ago I was posting in the PC forum and was thinking about going to the PC side. But then I spent the weekend playing Xbox and really thinking about it. I don't have all the time in the world to game, so I want convienence. I want to turn on my console, pop the game in and not have to worry about optimizing anything. I don't want to have to worry about changing out parts in a few years to get the best performance from my system. And I want to sit on my couch with my wireless controller and play with my friends. Now I know that most of those can be countered by PC gamers, but for me consoles will continue to be the way to go. Yes I lose out on some mods, but that isn't a big deal to me. It won't outweigh all the things I said above and the fact that I have about 30 real life friends that I play console games with. So the more I thought about it, the more I realized I probably wouldn't do it. And then I played some stuff on my older computer this weekend and remembered just how much I hated gaming on a kb/m. Sure it is more precise than a controller, but I still hate it.
I DON'T have to get another GPU as much as a want one. I could use this GPU for 3-5 years if I wanted to. I play on my couch using a 360 Wireless controller. I have about 30 friends on my Steam account that I play with. Plus it's great buying AAA titles for $20 or less. I have not paid $60 since I started PC gaming. That alone is worth going to PC. The initial investment may be a littler higher but in the long run the PC costs less than a console.
The friends is another reason I don't jump. I have one friend that games on a pc.
Microsoft's goal has always been about control of the living room. That why's they approached Sony in the early days to use a version of windows. If Sony had only said yes microsoft never would have made an Xbox.

Bigfame since pc gaming is so great why are you in the xbox forums?
That makes sense. Play what your friends are playing. When I started PC gaming I had NO friends and ended up making some really cool ones.

I am NOT allowed in the XBOX Forums. I have been a member of AVS for 5 years now and I post in the Xbox, Playstation, Wii & PC forums. I have all systems out there and I have an opinion as well. I used to post in the Xbox forums quite often. There are other options out there for people who may want to go into PC gaming. It has picked up alot over the past few years.

So Two Years after this Thread was started....

Microsoft fires the first shot in the "NEXT" generation....

reading major nelson's post. it seems that the may 21st even will not be showing everything. that a lot of games will be saved for E3 so they'd have new things to show rather than just regurgitate the may 21st event...

makes sense. rather than showing everything and then have the "nothing new" at E3 mistakes like other companies had.

i'm confused how did MS fire the first shot, wouldn't it be last shot?
well, technically, it could be either MS or Sony, depending on who releases the console first. rumors, press announcements, and conferences don't mean anything. it's actual product in actual user hands.

I don't count the Wii U. It's a pretty weak system with a weak social system and a weak ecosystem. It's the upgraded Wii that a lot of analysts hope would've been released in 2009. it's barely faster than the 360/PS3. none of the games have shown any real superiority over the 360/PS3 counterparts.

My assumption was that it'll be hardware and dashboard/built-in apps on May 21, and games for E3 a little over two weeks later, but that's not really based on anything other than a guess. That way, they can save their heavy hitters in the launch lineup for E3, and still build excitement for the console with the May event.

I think PC gaming is picking up as well. While I do not think it will cheaper then a console, you do get the upgradable part of it that is nice as well. I have been gaming since the Atari days, but I truly think the best gaming is still on PC with the Mods and add-ons that users create for games. Next best gaming for me would be Xbox 360 and it's intergration of online to the consoles. In the end though it's about the games, and if I can afford it I'd like to get all the systems for their exclusives at some point. If you make it I will play it biggrin.gif

I think they'd be sending a pretty strange message if they didnt put games front and center. They only get one chance to make a first impression. I mainly expect to see quite a bit of the UI....I don't think they're going to go as deep into the tech as Sony did though.

It makes perfect sense to not make games front and center when you factor in there will be another presentation at E3 a month later. If they go with a mass market appeal first they can start broad and work their way down to the hardcore users.

Announcement Event: Talk to everyone and cover the wide spectrum of usage for the new console

E3: Focus mostly on games and specifically the hardcore games that appeal to that market.

BUILD: You speak to developers about how easily they can bring their games to the new Console.

At least that is the way I would do it, and you have great buzz for a month before you start rolling out the new console on the convention circuit over the summer.
