I've learned my lesson. I'll be waiting for at least the first SKU change to get a handle on any launch issues. Hell, There's still to many current gen games inhabiting my coffee table that haven't even been touched.
(But, it is going to be hard if BF4 is both a launch title and is on parity with the PC)
I'm not rich, well-off and far from a "baller". I'm a pretty average guy works a 8-5 like everyone else.. but there is no reason for me to wait for technology this new & this "cheap". My last major 'tech' purchases would be $800 for a smartphone that I'll probably keep 2 years, $1600 for a laptop that I'll keep 3 years and I'm actively searching for a $2000 deal on a 65" Panny ST60 plasma I'll keep for 5 years or more. There is technology I can wait for because its insanely expensive right now (OLED, 4K, etc) and there is technology that is a day-one purchase for me because the price is right and the features are stuff I can use immediately. Considering a $400-500 next gen console is something I will literally use for 1000's of hours in the future.. it is by far one of the best bang for the buck tech purchases I can make. I would imagine most guys here on AVS are like me.
All that said.. nothing MS/Sony did last generation will keep me from spending upwards of $500 on a launch day next gen console. And I have went thru 4 RROD replacement consoles. No replacement was ever "that much" of a hassle.. and I had a replacement console in about 10 business days. The only frustration came from the fact that I had to wait to play.. because the games were so enjoyable. With this generation around since November 2005.. that means I've been playing an Xbox360 8 years now. There is no way in hell.. any tech enthusiast in an effort to make sure his $399 new console is solid buy.. is going to wait for a hardware revision/update before entering the next generation of gaming. If I'm that concerned with the way I'm spending $400-500.. then I'll make sure take my lunch to work for or stop hanging out at bars on the weekend for the next couple of months. It definitely wouldnt be some fact lacking attempt to wait 3, 6 possibly even 12 months to enter the next generation because I'm scared of another RROD or YLOD is simply not going to happen. Last generation was the only generation where the reliability of launch consoles were even an issue.. and those issues were overheating in the Xbox360 and a dying laser on the BR drive in the PS3. Issues that can & have been addressed.. and were fairly simple to fix.
I have confidence both companies will be much more cautious with their hardware selectoin this time around and reliability will be a much higher priority. Remember both companies lost millions due to warranty repair, customer service staff & possible missed sales. Furthermore both companies have ALREADY permanently addressed the reliability issues we saw last generation.. with their re-engineered "slim" models. I dont believe I've ever read of Slim Xbox360 RROD'ing.. or a Slim PS3 YLOD'ing. If MS & Sony figured out how to make the Slim models more reliable, then I'm sure they can figure out how to make the next generation as/more reliable. Finallyy each of these consoles will come with atleast a 1 year warranty, thats more than enough confidence to get me to buy BOTH the PS4 & NexBox them on launch day.
I have plenty of current gen (and even some last gen) games inhabiting my coffee table too. And I cant wait to Ebay/Amazon/Gamestop trade them in on whats next. Actually I cant wait to never have games sitting on my coffee table ever again. One of the things that excites me most about next generation is digital downloadable games and cloud storage. For the first time ever I wont have to worry about a stack of console gaming media gathering dust in my living room. November 2013 cant happen fast enough!Edited by Daekwan - 5/8/13 at 9:54am
