There's no real technical challenge, nextbox is x86, and will almost certainly run some variant of windows, just like WP8. The metro interface is already the standard across all their platforms. They'd need to build in controller support but that's no biggie, it'd just be an extension of keyboard support, kinect support would basically work the same as touchscreen support. I will be absolutely shocked if there isn't a significant degree of cross compatibility in the nextbox.
The only real question would be how they charge for it. They have some universal games already, like skulls of the shogun, which has cross platform syncing and multiplayer....but you have to buy the pc, phone and xbox versions individually. I believe there's other phone/PC universal games, where you get both versions for one price...but in order to get achievements on both platforms you need to pay for both.
They'll probably do what Sony did with the Vita, and try to double dip for a while. Eventually they'll realize, just like Sony, that they have ailing platforms, and they'll eventually give away the other versions for free to prop them up.
It would be a pretty epic middle finger to valve if they did it with the AAA games....but it would make me buy a nextbox in a heartbeat. Unless they get greedy again and try to bring XBL gold as a requirement for MP on PC, like they did with GFW.Edited by bd2003 - 5/17/13 at 11:32am
