Pioneer Vsx-1021-k vs. Yamaha A1000/2000

I'm currently looking at upgrading my Yamaha rxv-1700 to a more current avr. I've had my eye on the a2000 for a while now, but the pioneer announcement really caught eye. I've got a 5.1 setup with a stereo zone 2 outside. I've only got 5 hdmi devices to hook up also. I know the pioneer is not even out yet so comparisons will be difficult. How much of a difference should I hear between the two avrs? I'm a novice when it comes to the audio portion of audio/video, so any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hmmm... the Pioneer street price will be about $500-600 the Yamahas are over $1K.

I know. I'm just not sure if I'll be able to "hear" the difference between the two. The feature set of the pioneer is pretty good imo. I don't really need the extra inputs and output of the yamaha. The video processing is also not really needed. Would the a2000 really sound $700 better?

MCACC vs Ypao. Both are manually adjustable so you should be able to get the same sound from either of them with some tweaking. I had a Pioneer 1020 for a few weeks and it didn’t have enough power for me so I would wait and see if Pioneer beefs the amps up some. I think the A1000 would have a big advantage in that department.

If the pioneer runs out of power on you there will be a huge difference. If not, it should sound as good as the Yamaha with some tweaking.

Don't think there would be a big difference in sound. The A2000 may have more power. I have had good luck with Yamaha from a quality perspective. Had only one failure and have owned at least five of them.

The 1021 has a total of 770 watts. The a1000 has 735 and the a2000 has 910. Does this mean total power is a wash between the 3. The 2 yamaha avrs weigh around 10 pounds more than the pioneer.

You can and should pretty much ignore "total" watts. What you need to know is the output with at least 5 channels driven. Also check to see if the receiver supports 4 ohm speakers (without a 4 ohm setting- which on lower end receivers just reduces the power to keep the amp from overheating).

I'm very interested in as well, I need 1.4a and more hdmi inputs and really like the airplay option. My questions are:
1 - Will the sound quality be noticeably different (very happy with 2808ci)
2 - Does the Airplay on this device support video as well as audio (would be nice integration feature and reduce the need for an Apple TV)

Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Airplay for receivers only supports audio. You'd need an ATV for video...

Question about the Airplay for the VSX1021K, from what Ive read so far it seems that you can push audio from an iPad/iPod/iPhone, but I wasn't sure whether you can do the same thing from a Laptop. Would you be able to send audio to the receiver from a laptop through Airplay or would you still need something like an airport?

There isnt much difference between these receivers in sound quality, although the higher end Yamaha does have a bit more power on tap. I switched between these two Yamahas as well as the VSX-33, 35 and 37 in store and to my ears it was close to more or less a wash, with the Yamahas maybe possible a nose ahead. No major differences though. But if you really care that much sound-wise then I'd use a high quality external amp anyway.

Frankly I would pick between these receviers on features more than anything else.
