My connections are exclusively HDMI by the way.

1. LIMITED or CRUSHED DYNAMIC RANGE. I have gone through the manual at least a dozen times with a fine-tooth comb and after turning off the Dynamic Range Control and the ALC option, the output is still being compressed. DTS-Master Audio and Dolby True HD have a huge amount of headroom when it comes to dynamic range and I'm just not getting it at all. Very frustrating since I've got a hungry set of Klipsch Reference Speakers that are prepared for more volume.

2. DISPLAY ALWAYS SHOWS PCM AUDIO. No matter what Bluray I play, or what the audio format is (DTS Master, DOLBY True) the large front display always reads PCM. (Only on the Cable Box HDMI do I see "Dolby Digital" displayed on the HD channels. But Bluray, Nope!) I switched from "AUTO" to "DIRECT". No dice. The smaller format display that is supposed to show the logo/format -- shows nothing. This begs the question, is the receiver even READING the proper audio stream or is it not???

Any help on this would be appreciated. I'm literally a few days away from taking this back and exchanging it for a Denon or something else.

I wonder if it's the BD player causing your problems ... check your setting on it. My Sony player has a setting "BD Audio" which defaults to Mix. When in this setting, the player decodes the DTS-HD or True HD stream, mixes it with the secondary track and outputs in bitstream PCM. To get the DTS-HD or True HD output, you must set this to Direct. My 1021 works fine ... shows the proper format based on the disk recording.

Hmm, okay. I'll have to give that a try. That could be the problem. Hope so. Hopefully if that's the case, it will resolve this dynamic range issue.

THanks!

i thought "Pure direct" was similar to "direct" however it also adds in your MCACC settings? Is that wrong? i had mine on auto surround the entire time until recently when i pulled out the manual again and figured pure direct sounded better
post #1744 of 2584
Straight from the manual..

With Direct, the only modifications added to pure direct playback are calibration of the sound field by the MCACC system and the Phase Control effect.

Pure Direct - Plays back unmodified sound from source with only minimal digital treatment. No sound is output from the Speaker B in this mode.

Other than that firmware update posted here two months or so ago, have there been any more firmware updates? I cannot seem to find any reference to the first one, let alone any others.

Are you selecting a source that is connected via analog?
Yes I tried the tuner and the Internet radio

methinks you don't have the correct speaker configuration set... what do you have that set to?
Iam not home now but I don't remember turning the volume up.. Is it factory set to off like zone 1... Hmm ima feel silly if that was it..
^^^

check that first... the fact that you hear mcacc pinging the speakers is indicating that you don't have them configured as zone 2...

edit: you aren't checking the volume... you need to check how you have the avr configured...

I bought my VSX-1021-K several months ago primarily for the HDMI capabilities. I use it with my PS3, AppleTV, and XBox 360. I have a Samsung 52" TV. It seems to work pretty well with the AppleTV and XBox 360, but I've been having problems getting it to work correctly with the PS3 since I got it. It initially works fine when the PS3 is at the XMB, but I run into all kinds of problems watching DVDs. As soon as I select the DVD in the PS3's XMB, the screen goes black, and the TV indicates that it has no signal. There is a red light on the right side of the VSX-1021 that starts flashing (it's solid red when everything's fine). I've sometimes waited as long as 5 minutes or so, and nothing happens. If I power-cycle the VSX-1021, things will start working again. The PS3 seems to know that there's some sort of problem with sync or handshake because it does not progress with the DVD intro stuff until things are working again. In some cases, the problem seems to happen between intro screens on the disc (though that may only be with BD, I don't fully remember).

After I first set it up, I played with the settings on both devices trying to find a solution, but didn't have any luck. This is the first time I've dug deeper, though. I skimmed through the first 10 pages or so of the thread, but didn't find anything, so I apologize if this issue has been addressed later in the thread.

In case it matters, my PS3 is one of the earlier fat/shiny versions with limited backwards compatibility (not the absolute 1st gen with full BC, but not the later ones with none at all).

I would very much appreciate any help with this issue. It's really the only thing I seriously dislike about the VSX-1021 (after setup), but it's an incredibly frustrating problem. I'd like to stop having to power-cycle the receiver every time I go between the XMB and watching a DVD or BD.

So when running mcacc I shouldn't be hearing zone 2? I thought it was stage
post #1756 of 2584
Nevermind...
Well I've got my 1021 setup to run airplay, but at certain times, the connection seems to drop when playing from my iphone or ipad. Sometimes it stutters and comes back on, other times it cuts off completely and I have to press play on the iphone again to get it going.

I also have an Apple TV 2 connected via ethernet and it does not have the same problems.

Checked firmware on my Pioneer and it's up to date. Any suggestions? I bought this receiver specifically for it's Airplay with Zone 2 capabilities but if it continues to do this consistently, I will have to go a different direction.

I think the only thing you can do is try new high speed HDMI cables between your PS3 and the 1021 and between the 1021 and your TV. You can also try swapping HDMI ports on the 1021 and TV. If nothing helps, then all that's left is a call to pioneer. The red light on the right is for HDMI, as you noted, if it's not flashing, life is good. If it's out or flashing with a HDMI connected component then there is a problem.

So I picked up a new sub (BIC F12). I set the crossover to max (180hz), phase 0, and moved the switch to 7.1 receiver, this is what the people in the F12 thread told me to do to let the receiver control crossover when using sub in (LFE input).

Now, is MCACC set the correct crossover correctly for the sub? I set the speakers to 80hz crossover and set to small, is MCACC take care of the sub as well when I set the speaker crossover? And if not where do I adjust it and roughly what would be the optimal setting?

^^^

short answer... you are fine... leave the xover knob in the sub as high as it will go... you are doing it the correct way...

somewhat longer answer, and keeping it simple... in this case, the "xover" knob on the sub isn't really a xover in the truest sense of the term... it's low-pass filter (i.e. allow all frequencies below this to pass, keeping in mind it's not a brick wall, it's a slope)...

a "xover" is a combination of a high pass and a low pass filter... it "crosses over" between two "speakers"... with an avr, the bass management (i.e. setting your speakers to "small", which virtually everyone should be doing) sends low frequencies to the sub, and high frequencies to the rest of the speakers...

there's more (i.e. there's different slopes, etc.), especially once you start looking at the crossovers between the drivers in your speakers... but that should give you the basic idea...

hth...

Ok guys I am a rookie at this home audio setup. I believe I have all of my inputs setup correctly on my VSX-1021 but I can't seem to get the Zone 2 function to work. I am trying to set this up for my patio speakers but can't seem to get them to go hot. I have pulled the speakers down and tried to connect directly to the back of the 1021 but still no audio.

Steps I did confirm:

1. Made sure Zone 2 was turned on.
2. Set the source to a signal that was broadcasting audio.

Do I need to setup the speakers with an additional amp? Seems like that would be handled by the tuner but want to cover my basis.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Really looking forward to getting audio to the back yard for the summer cookouts.

Regards

Hi colorblindspy, note that Zone 2 can only accept "analog" connected sources. You'll need to connect a RCA analog red/white cable.

I assume both of you have the zone 2 speakers connected to the Back/Zone 2 speaker terminals.

1st you have to configure the speakers for Zone 2. See manual pg. 64.
Next turn on Zone 2 (manual pg. 49), select an analog source and adjust the volume. Everything should work. Ctxx, if you didn't configure as Zone 2, you will hear sounds during MCACC, it assumes the speakers are Rear Surrounds.

Just picked-up one from Newegg for $299 + FS. Just couldn't resist. Building a house with a HT Room. My B&W Nautilus speakers + B&K 307 are going up there for movie duty and heavy music listening. This 1021 will live in the family room with my 6 series B&Ws on TV and daily audio surround duty. Should be great with it's flexibility and connect-ability.

correct...

also note that the source must be analog (or internal, such as the tuner)...

Love the airplay on this thing. Great with the iPad and iPhone. People come over with their iPhone and the receiver picks it up instantly. Crazy!! The iPhone app is great also.

I'm confused with the sub issue that was stated a few posts up. A ways back in this thread (months ago), it was stated to set the crossover knob on the sub itself to 80. Now I'm seeing someone say to set it to 180. Which is it?

You either set it to bypass or all the way up if you plan on using your AVR to control your crossover.
