Pioneer VSX-1021 Owners' Thread - Page 68

I didn't get a reply to my 02-26 post, so I'm trying one more time with some clarification=>

The receiver appears to receive HDMI from the Comcast STB OK while in Demo mode -- I get STB audio from my 5.1 speakers that are connected to the receiver, DD indication on the receiver front panel, and so on. But my TV just says check cable. I'm using a high performance HDMI cable that works fine when connected directly between the STB and the same TV HDMI input. I've tried wiggling the HDMI cable on the back of the AVR while connected to the TV's HDMI input, but nothing changes. Is there something else I need to do to get the receiver to output HDMI?

I've noticed that the HDMI connectors don't seat very deeply on this AVR. Is this normal? With my other devices (TV, BD, STB, and Apple TV), the HDMI cable pushes all the way in such that the connector isn't exposed.

Either the AVR isn't outputting the HDMI signal properly, or there is some incompatibility with my 5 year old Samsung HL-S6767W.

Anyone out there using a Samsung HL-S6767W with this AVR successfully?

Any help would be most appreciated. Since it's too late to return the AVR to Newegg, I will have to try my luck with Pioneer Tech Support. Not looking forward to it.

I'd make sure they are seated correctly. I was rewiring things yesterday, and noticed similar behavior, but it was because the cable wasn't actually getting into the connector correctly. It seems to take a little bit of force (although not much).

@nw viking...

it's not the avr... it is the set top box... connect with component/spdif...

Just got an 1121. My problem is that I can`t get pass through to work at all. My tv doesn`t have arc, I have hdmi control to on,audio to normal, power to normal. I have the optical out from tv to tv/sat optical in on the 1121. The passthrough worked perfectly on the avr that the pioneer replaced, same component, same cables. The manual seems to be of no help at all. Before i turn avr off I select the input that the cable dvr is hooked to,in this case dvr. When I turn 1121 off, a message comes up telling me to check Signal cable, and thats as far as it goes, no video or audio. Please help!

You may want to return the pio. Passthru is pretty hit and miss, with more misses than hits, with this pio. Shame you didn't find this thread before you got the pio.

After watching TV the past week with the STB connected directly to the TV, I reconfigured with STB => AVR => TV. Now things are working.

I did push a little extra hard this time as you suggested when inserting the HDMI connector into the back of the AVR. Oh well....now I need to go thru the setup process. I still haven't decided if I'm going to use the AVR full-time, or hook up the component cables from the STB to the TV. My TV is from 2007 -- definitely won't support pass-thru; sounds like few people have had luck with that anyway.

If you are talking about standby pass through then for most it has not worked. Issues is the implementation of HDMI control requires all devices to be fully supporting it. Some how pioneer has done it that does not allow anything else. Apparently other mfr's work some how.

Aha. I was just going to come on here and ask about this issue. After you pointed me in the right direction of changing the Output from Stereo to Surround on the cable box I started getting these dropouts/skips. I narrowed it down to the UVerse box but I wanted to confirm. The UVerse boxes have always had issues with HDMI. The installer even told me that they recommend that I use a component connection but until I got an AVR involved I hadn't had any issues.

I'm running the uverse box with component connection and spdif. The drop outs are still their. It come and goes, mostly happens with stereo signals. Had uverse out to check it out, doesn't seem to be much they can do. I have 3 uverse boxes in the house. We swaped them around and all 3 had the same drop outs.
Just one of several minor issues that have made me decide to go back to cable as soon as I get a new HTPC put together.

I cannot get the setup menu for my VSX-1021-K to appear on my TV screen when I press the Home Menu button on the remote. I have double checked the connection (RCA cable from Monitor to video input of TV). Other screens do appear on the TV when I use the input selector knob on the receiver (Sirius, H.M.G., etc.), but the setup screen will not. The last time I was able to use it was when I ran the Full Auto MCACC to calibrate my speakers. Since then, the setup menu will not run. I put fresh batteries in the remote, and the unit responds when I use the input knob to change to other functions (inputs). I did connect a blu ray player to the receiver via HDMI, but got an error message I believe was generated by the receiver saying something to the effect that the receiver's HDMI out was not connected to anything (TV has only component/s-video/composite inputs; I was hoping I could use the HDMI connection for audio only; dumb, I know.), so I disconnected it. Is there something I may have done that is keeping the setup from running?

EDIT: Just did a factory reset, unplugged the receiver for a spell, but no joy.

Did you press the receiver button before you pressed the home key? I forgot that yesterday myself.

Oh yeah, several times, just to be sure. Nope, nothing seems to be working like it did. I'm going to put in a call to Pioneer tomorrow morning, but I already have an RMA from the vendor for an exchange. I'll post any useful info I may happen to get.

EDIT: Heh, id10t error. Didn't realize there are two buttons on the remote labeled "Receiver" and I didn't even see the little white one amid all the others around it. All is well, but the tech I spoke with at Pioneer had a good laugh, and I'm sure another "moron user" story to share at the water cooler. Still, Pioneer could do a slightly better job with their documentation. I just got a new Pioneer head unit for my car, and the user manual is just this side of a joke.

Apologies if this has been discussed previously, I searched the thread and didn't see the precise discussion, though I may have overlooked. Anyway: I have the Pioneer 1021 connected via HDMI to my LED Vizio which has ARC. Control with HDMI on the Pioneer is on, as is CEC with the Vizio. I have no issues with audio either way, can watch YouTube or other TV content and get good audio on the receiver. However, ever since I turned on CEC on the TV, when I turn on my system, as soon as the TV turns on, it always shuts off the receiver, forcing me to pick up the receiver remote and turn it on manually. Sometimes this happens twice. If I turn off either CEC on the TV or control with HDMI on the receiver this solves the problem, but why would I want to do that? The whole point is to have both units connected so that content is seamless, allowing me to watch Netflix or youtube from the TV. Little help?

I'm hoping I've got the settings wrong, so do you have any suggestions?

did you resolve this?
I bought this receiver and after basic setup... I have the same issue

my setup:
Patriot Box Office - HDMI - to receiver
Roku 2 XD - HDMI - to receiver
Old XBOX - composite - to receiver
HDMI output from receiver to 42" HDTV.
2 Speakers connected to receiver

No issue with Audio.
Video when Upscale is turned on .. very grainy
with upscale turned off.. still grainy

thanks..

I know that there are quite a few variables to work with here but do most people have a different EQ saved for 2.1 music? I've been using the same saved MCACC EQ settings for movies and two channel music and I was wondering if I maybe am not getting the best sound for my music. I generally just leave it on Auto Surround and let the AVR pick. Is that the consensus on here or is there even a consensus?

Just a quick side note: I picked up a pair of the Pioneer FS51 floorstanders with the recent New Egg sale and they sound fantastic.

I don't have my 1021 connected to a modern TV via HDMI yet, but am shopping with the feature you are working with in mind. My goal is not so much to control both the receiver and TV with one remote (a Harmony will handle that), but I do want to be able to listen to broadcasts without having to use my receiver, which is supposedly one of the options CEC/Control with HDMI gives you. In any case, it sounds like you are having the same issue many others have; namely, this technology is not yet ripe. Before I got my 1021, I went on Pioneer's site to find TVs that they list as compatible with their receivers via Control with HDMI. They list only two manufacturers (this info comes from Pioneer's Japan site)-Sharp & Panasonic. If this is so, you may be out of luck with your Vizio. I am dismayed by how much research consumers must do now to be even half-way sure the technology they want will actually work. Good luck.

Regarding updating the firmware:

If you have the 1021 connected to your network by ethernet do you still have to download the firmware update onto a flashdrive then plug that into the front of the machine or can the AVR detect the update and do the download/istallation itself like my OPPO does?

Sorry if this has been covered already but I'd really like to know.
No flashdrive needed.
Just go to the menu and check for update.
As long as it is on the network, it will download and install.
Strolled the the manual looking for answer, but no luck, so...

Is there a way to turn off the scrolling display on this receiver? When I stream iTunes to it via my wired network (and BTW, is this "Airplay"?), the song or radios station I'm playing scrolls across the front panel; kind of annoying, really. Can it be turned off, like the Demo mode can? TIA,

Thanks Doug. Checked and I'm up to date.

Had a little "blonde" moment earlier as my wife calls them. For ages I have been unhappy with the sound out of my cable and satellite receivers. Lossless audio through blu ray and DD through DVD is great but normal tv always sucks. I have played around with optical cables, different surround settings, pure direct, everything.

And then it hit me.

30 seconds later after looking in the settings on the cable and satellite receivers themselves (that i had never knew existed) i realised that neither were set for DD 5.1 and were just pumping out stereo!! Lol

And to think I have been blaming the 1021!!

Hi Kids -

I'm trying to hook up a MacBook Pro through the 1021, but can't seem to get the sound working. Wondering if anyone had the same issue and/or a suggestion?

Details: The MBP outputs it's video thru a mini display connector which runs thru an adapter to an HDMI cord and then into the 1021 - video works fine. HOWEVER, the Mac doesn't include it's audio in the HDMI, so that comes out as analog and needs to be patched into the 1021 via RCA stereo plugs. When I do input setup, I'm only offered COAX-1/2 or OPTical-1/2, but they don't seem to work.

My reading of the manual is that the COAX input is for a digital signal - it works fine for the DVR set top box using composite video and digital audio. I think the issue is that video is coming through HDMI and the 1021 expects the audio to be there as well, or at least as some kind of digital input. (Not sure why Mac has decided to split the video and audio in such a strange way, probably has something to do with the new Mini connector....)

At any rate, I've trolled this board up and down and haven't really seen this issue addressed. I found a mention of using the "Signal Select" button on the remote to help choose the audio input and tried that, but that doesn't seem to help me any, so I'm pretty stumped. Any help?

Thanks,

My receiver is with me for about 3 months now and today I tried to set it up.

I have cisco e3000 flashed with tomato firmware and another netgear router.

Netgear router is my primary and cisco is my wireless bridge or client.

Now i tried to set the cisco router in wireless client mode and then used wired connection from it to the avr.

I could not get airplay working this method.

Then I changed the e3000 to wireless ethernet bridge mode.

Now i could see the AVR on iphone under aiplay option but could not play any songs.

On my Macbook I see AVR under airplay but again when I try to connect to it I just see "connecting to ...." for a long time and nothing happens...

Can someone help me on this setup?

This receiver likes and prefers to drop off network.

The only solution I've found is a power cycle from power source (wall). Called Pioneer about the issue and they were zero help.

What I did was unplug the unit from the wall. Waited 30 seconds or so. Plugged in. Try again. Boom. Works. Have to do this about once per month.

when airplay won't connect i restart the router and all is okay again. it's easier than rebootng the avr.
