I need some help. Some one is selling me VSX-1021-K receiver for $160 on craigslist in perfect condition. Is that a good deal?
They were selling for $250-300 brand new less than a year ago. I paid $290 for mine in November 2011. So yes, that seems reasonable -- as long as you can absolutely verify that it's really in perfect condition, and complete with the remote and the calibration microphone. You absolutely must have both.
Personally I would not buy it unless it was all connected and actually working and be able to run it thru its paces to be sure it is fully functional.

To me, this is a lot of money to bring home and find out I just bought a expensive brick !

Just my opinion.

Ok I have done a search but cannot find an answer if it is here. I have two 1021 receivers and I have one hooked directly into my router. I named it "1021f" to identify it on my airplay. I am trying to get an upstairs 1021 receiver which I am using a Belkin universal HDTV wireless adapter plugged into the Ethernet port on the back and connected wirelessly to my router seems to work perfectly! But, the only problem is when I activate the belkin under the name 1021 my other receiver 1021f no longer shows up as an option when I am trying to access airplay on my ipad or iphone. If I shut off the belkin adapter the receiver 1021f shows up again,

Any help? I checked and the two receivers have two different ip addresses but that is all my limited networking knowledge can think to do.

Is it possible to have both receivers on the same network and access airplay? or do they just naturally conflict?
Hi guys, i took a chance and bought the receiver. Everything is fine except one thing i can't figure out. I hear a faint buzzy noise that comes and goes every two seconds from all 5 speakers and at the same time on tv screen i see some distortion every two seconds as well. I am using very thin wire that i had from my old receiver. Probably 24 or 26 gauge. That might me reason? Thanks.

I'd consider it, it will cost you more than it is worth to repair. I'd do a bench test first though, hook it up very basically first. Like only L/R speakers carefully attached with no shorts and use the built in tuner for signal. If you still have the buzz (I'd guess yes) then it is definitely broken. If not keep adding outputs and inputs until you find the 'break point'
Also, if you don't have access to an AC filter, find a different circuit (not just a different outlet) to power it from as a test. There could be something else plugged into the same AC circuit that's inducing the interference.

It appears that my VSX-1021 may be brain damaged.

I noticed today that its networking capability can no longer be configured nor is it even maintaining a live connection to the switch or router. I am getting the dreaded "Network Setup/Applying Settings" hang-up upon entering the "IP Address, Proxy" configuration. Occasionally, I am allowed to actually change the network settings prior to hanging if I perform a system reset (put into standby, hold down enter + hit standby button) plus a "hard reset" (hold down standby whilst unplugged for several seconds). Regardless of whether I choose DHCP or manual IP address settings, it will hang indefinitely and the connectivity indicator will not light. On a rare occasion, the connectivity indicator will light up for several seconds upon power-up, but it will shut off and remain off afterward. I've tried multiple cables and connecting directly to the router versus my external switch. This setup worked perfectly at one time.

I'm pretty certain I've never applied a firmware update. Unfortunately, the "software update" menu option is grayed out which precludes me from updating via USB or even checking the current firmware version.

Any thoughts? Naturally, I purchased this thing on Feb 3, 2012 so my warranty is gone.

UPDATE:

It appears that someone else has here had this exact problem with a different model. I came across the service manual on my own and attempted to perform the factory flash procedure. Unfortunately, I had the identical (poor) results as the poster. I guess I should be happy that I managed to get an entire year out of this thing. :P

I would like the receiver to switch the output to AMP when I Airplay audio from my phone, but switch back to THROUGH when using the Apple TV, Wii, Cable, etc...

Is there a way to program the receiver to do that? I read through the manual, and couldn't seem to find a solution. It's driving my wife crazy!

Thanks!
AFAIK, through/amp is a global setting.
Thanks for help guys. The problem was gone itself. I don't know what was causing it. I think probably some interference. I watched couple of movies everything seems to be fine now. Will see if any problem arises.
Hello guys, i am back again with the same problem. So it is a static noise from all speakers. I replaced speaker wires with brand new 14 gauge wires, but the problem is still there. One thing i noticed when my receiver is off, my powered subwoofer is making same kind of static noise, so i am sure it's not my receiver. It's coming from electrical outlet. Then i moved my receiver to different outlet away from tv and all the wires in the same room and connected all 5 speakers, but this time the static noise was unnoticable unless i grab a speaker and take it close to my ear, but it was there. There is some interference coming out from my outlet i think. And that static noise comes and goes every 2-3 seconds . And if i turn the volume up the static noise stays same with no effect. How do i fix this problem? Thanks for help guys.

It appears I have to bring it in to get repaired, which I am dreading after reading the horror stories. Does anyone know what the issue was? Was it a soldering issue, relay, resistor?

Also, for those who had this issue and had it repaired. Has it lasted or has the some problem occured again?

Did you get this resolved? _ I am having same issue after 13 months (now out of warranty !!) The resets are now up to about 12_ so we just leave it on to avoid having to power up again.

Fortunately, we have never come across the problem of the hunt. VSX1021.

I would take the cnet review with a grain of salt. Until you try them both i wouldn't let a review sway you either way. I love my Vsx-1021 but i have a coworker that loves his Denon. Go with what you think sounds best and works best with your system.

I came back from vacation with the UE22 error and no sound. I tried updating software over the Internet and via USB. After 20%, there is an "update error 1". I tried a soft reset and hard reset, no sound. I get a picture as normal (everything connected via hdmi.. I can only assume the attempted software update screwed something up

Ps none of my connected devices have sound through receiver, but function normally when connected directly to TV

I'm trying to figure out how to access dolby digital plus on my htpc. I stumbled across it watching netflix and was loving it but been trying to figure out how to get back to it for weeks. Also right now I'm watching nba on abc and on the info it says dolby d plus but all I can get is stereo alc direct and pure direct using auto mode. I've scrolled through all listening modes and cannot figure it out! Ease help me out here!

Has anyone else had an issue where they can't update the firmware? I no longer get sound and I think the firmware might be the reason

Hi,

I have a Pioneer VSX 921-k receiver and have lost my network connection...while in the Network Setup menu, I inadvertently clicked "enable proxy" to "on", and hit save...now the receiver network functions seem stuck as I get a screen that has a blue circle with an exclamation point which say's "A/V Receiver...Network Setup...Applying Settings", but it just stays this way and I can't get past this.

I've made a factory reset without success.

Has anyone a solution of this problem ?

Thank's for your help

Hi there. I see Newegg has MartinLogan Motion 12 on sale again. What do you all think of running them thru a 1021? They're a 4ohm speaker. Any comments would help as I dont know how a 1021 would power them in a 5.1 or 2.1 system. I'm stating out real general here: no room dimensions, other speakers I aleady have, etc.....mostly interested if the 1021 has the power to do it.

The 1021 is not rated for 4-ohm loads. That doesn't mean it can't drive them, but it does mean the speakers could more easily demand more current than the amplifiers can deliver. Since someone who buys speakers like that is probably not looking for a nice quiet system for background music, I'd be very careful.

Mr rdclark: Thanks for info. I need to refresh my brain on 4 and 8 ohm stuff. And yea, I'm not looking for background music lol!

Hey gang,

I've got the VSX-1021K and recently hooked up the zone 2 speakers on our deck. I've got 2 speakers and the wires run under the house onto the deck. I've got the speakers hooked up through the zone 2 spots on the back, but I'm having some trouble getting sources to play on those speakers.

I've got the following devices hooked up.
  1. Apple TV
  2. Cable
  3. Blu Ray player
  4. Xbox 360
  5. Tuner (internal tuner to the unit)

The problem I'm having is the only source that I can get to do anything is the Tuner. I can't play music on it through airplay, I can't get my apple TV to play music, and nothing else seems to show up.

Any thoughts?
The 1021 can't down convert from digital sources to zone 2. Therefor zone 2 won't work with hdmi or optical input. Only analog inputs play to zone 2. AirPlay works on my 1021 so I'm not sure the issue there. I can see the problem if you are streaming via airplay into the ATV then hdmi into the receiver. See the manual pg 20 for a list of inputs that work on zone 2. HTH.
Thanks for the response. I figured out a way to work around it...it's silly, but whatever...it works.

I have 2 rooms with speakers. Zone 1: our media room & Zone 2: Our Deck. I have to select VSX-1021A on my airplay device. I then go into the app on my phone and select zone 2 to select the HMG source. Then I can go back to zone 1 and change the source to whatever I choose. But I've found it to be tricky and very finicky. If I get a phone call it messes up the entire operation. Or, if for some reason my phone loses a connection momentarily to my wireless or pandora...it's back to step one.

I'm pretty disappointed by this. When buying this receiver, I did so with the understanding that I could have 2 zones playing different devices. I'm very disappointed that really the only "device" that works is a tuner...or some other analog device I have to plug in (of which I have NONE!)
It's a common disappointment, but in fact it's the case with all but very high-end AVR's that zones require analog inputs. Many devices have both digital and analog outputs and can use both simultaneously. In my case, it's true of all my disc players, my TiVoHD, my Comcast HD cable box, my Roku, and even my PS3. Not only do they output multichannel via HDMI or optical, but they also downmix to stereo for the analog feed.

The only Airplay device I use is my iPad, but I find it works as I would expect it to. Use the device to choose the Airplay output, and use the AVR's app, or its remote, to select the desired input for each zone. How else could it work?

As for dropping connections, it sounds like you're blaming Pioneer for the way Apple designed the iPhone to work. But I'm not an iPhone user, so my understanding is limited.
rdclark,

I'm not trying to blame Pioneer for how the apple product works. It's the fact that I have to do some weird work around to get my airplay device to work on a pioneer device. To get it to work, I have to set my airplay device to the vsx-1021K. Once there, I have to go to zone 2 and set it to HMG. Basically the airplay becomes a source that's playable through HMG.

I guess what I'd like is to be able to select zone 2 from my airplay device. I don't know if that's the fault of Apple or Pioneer. But my assumption is that when I select which "speakers" I'd like to use to play the airplay source, vsx-1021K zone 2 should be an option. This is something that happens on the reciever side. It should offer up zone 2 as an output. I'd think.

If I take a call while airplay is running, it stops the connection to HMG and continues to run it on zone 1 after the call. Apple Airplay is doing what I asked it to do. It's the pioneer receiver that's reverting back to changing the source of each zone.

I guess you nailed it when you said "higher end" receivers. I didn't have the understanding that I was getting something other than a high end receiver when I bought it.

By the way, I just re-read this and I think I came off sounding critical to you. I didn't mean to come across that way and I appreciate you input.

The receiver only has one network address, so I'm not sure being able to choose Zone 1 or Zone 2 via Airplay is feasible.
