how will the 1021 compare sound and power wise to my old yamaha r-8?
Have had the 1021 up and running and its doing everything I want it to do well.

I've noticed a few quirky things I haven't seen mentioned as of yet however.

1. I'll be sitting there watching TV and then open up my iPad to check email or whatever and it will automatically switch my receiver to the AirPlay mode when my iPad wakes up. Mind you, I have no apps running on the iPad at all and nothing running that is using AirPlay. Just the act of waking up the iPad will switch the receiver to the AirPlay mode. I can switch the system back to what I was watching on TV and use the Ipad with no trouble once its woken up.

2. Similar issue but different. Sitting there watching TV with my wife surfing on the Ipad. Everything working fine but then she opens up the app Words-With-Friends and suddenly the receiver is switched to Airplay mode. Nothing on the iPad is running AirPlay, in fact no music apps are on at all. This is very reproducible. Everytime Words With Friends is opened the receiver switches to AirPlay mode. Just weird.

Anybody else having this issue at all? Other than these two things I've been loving the receiver. Kids can watch TV in main zone while I can stream Pandora to zone 2 getting ready in the morning or going to work.....etc....

EDIT: Sorry, just noticed that this only happens when we are using the Apple TV. This DID NOT occur when watching TV. Basically wife was using AppleTV in main zone and then woke up iPad which in turn switched the receiver to AirPlay mode even though no AirPlay is activated on the iPad. Same thing with the Words With Friends app......when opening the WWF app it turned the receiver to the AirPlay mode.

anyone old enough here to have listened to a yamaha r-8? lol i think i bought this thing new in early 90's. then replaced it with a surround sound denon avr 600. by the way, the r-8 kicks the denons ass on sound power.

I was also able to get sound from the sub by setting the front speakers to small, but the setup just wasnt sounding right that way... am I missing something or do the front speakers always have to be set to small to get output from the sub? thanks

Go to speaker setup and make sure the speakers are set to small. MCACC like to set them to large which will only let the sub function for LFE and send all bass to your mains.
Took me a while to figure it out too.

i found a place selling new 1021 recievers with a 60 day return policy. they are not an authorized pioneer dealer. would i loss my 1 year warranty if i bought from them? price is under 400 bucks.
Per Pioneer there is no warranty unless you buy from an authorized dealer. It's the chance you take for a good deal.
with the 60 day return policy i may chance it. 399 is the price. cheapest on amazon is 529. i could use the extra money to buy a used crown ce 1000 amp or a new onky 282 amp to drive my 2 15" subs.
Can't say as I blame you. I have done the same thing in the past with Pioneer amps. I got my last one for half the retail price - it was a Pio elite model. The only reason I would be hesitant on this model is that lots of people have been reporting problems with the amp - just read earlier posts in this thread. It's a new direction for Pioneer with the net features and user upgradable firmware.

That being said I have had no problems with mine which I did get at Best Buy.

Check and see if you can slap a SquareTrade warranty on it. Might make it a little bit risky. I know they have some sort of tie in with Ebay, and I wouldn't be surprised if they cover purchased from non-authorized sellers.

Well put me in the very satisfied so far category. Couple of caveats/notes:

Tech level: low to medium

Setup: Fairly straightforward. I am using this only for audio - no video or monitors attached. Basically using for main floor and outdoor audio. Have speakers wired to each room and using "ext stereo setting" to distribute sound equally (this is not for HQ listening but instead for ambient music/radio, outdoors, etc). Connected via LAN and recognized immediately by network. A bit tricky with no monitor to set up but install disc was reasonably helpful (antiquated looking interface, but who cares)

Pros:
1) The Pioneer AV control app is pretty elegant. Using HP media server to store and stream itunes library. Recognized immediately and streams without audio hiccups. The glossy interface more than makes up for the install disc, and this is the one that counts. I can't say for sure of course without owning but from what i could gather this is a better offering than from denon or other airplay equipped receiver apps.
2) OK - this is where my noob status comes in but only today figured out how to stream anything from ipad. For the those in the same boat: I was trying to do this from the AV control app without success. First open itunes on ipad. Click on airplay icon and set to VSX 1021. Exit itunes then open pandora, internet radio apps, npr and voila in a few seconds I was listening to eddie vedder playing the ukele. Its pretty darn cool. You can then open the Pioneer app to control receiver settings.

Cons:

1) You can't A/B switch from the ipad. Small hassle but maybe will be able to be upgraded via firmware.

2) You can set up for a Zone 2 or set of B speakers but not both. For me I chose the B set up b/c it allowed me to wire more rooms total.

3) For larger libraries the AV control app can be fairly clunky (e.g trying to find a specific song or group can be a chore). While I am sure this is in part a fault of the streaming client, a search or shuffle function would be a welcome upgrade.

All in all, for $500 it allowed me to do what has been a holy grail for some time. Use the ipad to send music and radio throughout the entire house with no wires or equipment in sight.

placed my order today. guess i'm in the 1021 club. yeah me!!! now just waiting on my benq6000 and 1021 to arrive. guess i'll have to let the 1021 drive those 15" subs till my wallet gets a refill

There is a glitch when using the tuner or airplay that results with no video/audio when switching back to DVR mode for watching TV. The solution so far is pulling the power plug and rebooting the unit. I had to do this multiple times over the weekend. Anyone else having this problem?

HDCP error when using Airplay and Internet radio.

Is there a way to tell the system to not try to display track info on the TV? If i change the TV source from the receiver to my main Dish box setting (In other words turn off display functionality for the receiver) I get the flashing HDCP error. I don't always want the TV on and there are times where I might be watching something on the TV but listening to tunes. I never got pass through HDMI to work with my Phillips TV therefore I have to have the DISH box connected directly to the TV and then composite audio out to the receiver.

I have been very happy with the 1021 just a lot of feature sets to go through and try to understand.

My setup:
VSX-1021
Dish HD receiver (direct connect to tv)
Phillips TV and Dvd player
Apple TV
Polk Audio bookshelf speakers with Pioneer center speaker and sub woofer. No surround.
iPad and iPhone Apps
Ethernet connection through Linksys router acting as a bridge to my home wifi.
Another issue: for some reason after a week of no issues my network is acting up. I lose the internet connection to my router and the IP address defaults to 169. address. Nothing to do with my network. Anyway, the big issue is when I try to reset things on thr receiver it locks up. The Network Setup display on the receiver flashes forever as does the A/V Receiver Network Setup Apply Settings dialog box on the TV. I can't change any settings from DHCP to Fixed address for example when the receiver is locked up like this. Very frustrating and wonderimg if anyone else has come across this issue. The bridge router i am connected to works fine becaue two other devices have a connection. I also tried a Linksys gaming adapter I have but it makes no difference. The receiver just flashes forever.

Thanks

I also occasionally get dropouts during Airplay about once every 10 minutes of constant play. It can be from an iPhone or MacBook via iTunes. Every 30 minutes or so I'll get a dropout that doesn't recover. I have to stop iTunes and hit play again. Then the music resumes. Once the receiver dropped off the network and had to be reset by pulling the power cord.

My A/V gear is connected to the household wireless network on the other side of the house through a wireless bridge. I'm wondering if packet loss is the problem. Can AirPlay really be this fault intolerant? Or is it just the implementation in the VSX-1021?

I'm thinking of trying a pair of PowerLine adaptors instead of using the wireless bridge. Now I just have to choose a brand and model.

It's the implementation, my airport express never drops out

I'm not convinced. I've had my 1021 for several weeks now, and also experiencing the same as others. However, I've also been following several Denon and Marantz forums--just to see how the AirPlay implementation works on other devices. I see the same issues. Sometimes works flawlessly; other times problems. All the reading and troubleshooting I've performed leads me to believe it's not the 1021's fault.

Hey guys - first post. This seems to be the best resource on the web for my 1021 purchase...
I like the receiver....but:

1. I am getting video dropout. I have my components input thru HDMI, and then then HDMI going directly to the tv.

I originally thought it was the 1021, so I returned it - to only have the second 1021 do the same thing (I still haven't ruled out that the 1021 is still the problem). I had an Onkyo receiver previously, with exactly the same setup, with no video interruption.

Essentially, the tv just goes blank (while sound continues), and then video resumes approx 3 seconds later. This happen about every 30 minutes, and at its worse every 10 minutes.

Any thoughts? I like to think I can figure most things out - but this has got me stumped. Please help out!

Thanks.

I really think this is a handshake issue with hdmi and the Tivo. The reason I say that is I had that problem with my Onkyo 2308CI and a Tivo HD. I am now having the same issue on a regular basis with that same Tivo HD hooked directly to a TV in another room.

@ Steverm2 and sammydub:

HDMI is the culprit. You will find similar issues with almost every receiver and cable box/tivo.

So, an upgrade of hdmi cable from the receiver out to the tv? Or, is this something I am just going to have to live with?
I find it funny that it didn't happen with my previous receiver.
Thoughts?
if it is a hand shake issue,it should be the cable from tivo/cable,not from reciever to tv.no problems with sony dvd or apple tv.2 of the 4 input cables are the same brand, but it is a pain to get to rear of unit to check.will report back on this.

no.

it's the cable box itself. they are notorious for not playing well with repeaters in the chain...

a trick to try... "we" have sometimes had more luck with recalcitrant cable boxes by trying the "last" hdmi port on the back of the avr...

This receiver seems to have way too many issues from the posts here. I think i will wait for some firmware update or just wait for the 1121 to come out.
^^^

such as?
^^ like for almost all people the hdmi passthru doesn't really work. Airplay keeps dropping audio after a while and people have to reset the receiver and lots of other issues people have reported in this thread (and i have read the whole thread) and many of these problems are common to multiple users here. So i would rather wait for the 1121 (or a firmware update on the 1021) and hope for these glitches to be fixed. Until then i have to hold off on buying a receiver.
