I just got the dreaded B57113 error when trying to start the iControlAV2 iPad app to control the VSX-1021-K. The iPad app couldn't connect, showing the B57113 error code.

It has never done this before. To make things stranger, I was still able to stream music from iTunes to the receiver. I tried resetting the IP address of the receiver through the on-screen GUI. But that didn't help.

After unplugging the receiver and "rebooting" it, the error was no longer present and everything worked fine again.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Yes I had this problem once. I press and hold the power button for 10s to reset the server. It happens when I play around the ipad apps, trying to airplay from different devices, while doing the remote control thing. The iControlAV2 just hangs and never connects again. I feel both Airplay from iDevices and iControlAV2 software are still buggy and unstable. Hopefully a future update can resolve this.

I have outside speakers connected to Zone 2 and when they are playing and the main speakers are off, I hear the subwoofer for the music playing through Zone 2.

Hah! This is what I would *like* to do (see my question in post #414)! I would be interested in hearing about your setup as well.

Everything I did was pretty much straight forward. I have my 5.1 speakers connected to FRONT, CENTER, SURROUND and SUBWOOFER. My two outside speakers are connected to SURROUND BACK/ZONE 2. Nothing is connected to FRONT HEIGHT/WIDE/B. And I selected the setup from the gui that showed the zone 2 speakers in another room. I don't think I did anything else setup-wise. I hear the subwoofer with Zone 2 when I hit the power (off) for the main zone. So basically if you are using both zones and hit the power button to shut off the main zone (you will see Zone 2 on the front panel display slightly faded out) I then hear the bass for zone 2 thru the subwoofer. This is the only scenario that this occurs in (to answer the question from the other person who replied to my post).
I've had the 1021 for about 3 weeks now--and I'm loving it.

My question is (I hope) pretty straightforward. I've got a 5.1 speaker system hooked up to it (like several others here, I've got the Energy Take Classic 5.1). Nothing else--no Zone 2, no rear surrounds, no front height or wide speakers. The question: Does it matter which of the "Speaker System" settings I use?

I've left it on the "Normal (SB/FH)" setting, but that is really designed for a 7.1 setup. Does this matter? Is the receiver trying to send sound to the (unattached) rear speakers? Am I not getting some of the sound from my (side-mounted) surrounds? Or is the receiver "smart" enough to send all surround sound through the two attached side-mounted surrounds?

Or: should I be using the Zone 2 setting, which treats your main room as a 5.1 system (even though I have no Zone 2 speakers attached)?

The user's manual claims that "Your favorite speaker connections can be selected even if you have fewer than 5.1 speakers" (p. 12), but I have found no way to even select a simple 5.1 system!

I should note that I have yet to perform the MCACC procedure. I'm waiting until after the 50 hour break-in period that Energy recommends for the speakers. If the MCACC procedure will resolve this issue automatically, please just say so and my question will be answered!

Thanks, as always, for your collective wisdom!

"normal" is fine...

run mcacc... at least get your delays/levels set up right...

speaker break-in, well... let's just say that's been discussed to death here on numerous occasions...
Thanks, Chris, I appreciate your reply.

As for the speaker break-in period... I know it's a much debated (maligned?) issue, but I guess I'm just going with the better-safe-than-sorry approach!

you are welcome... yea, go ahead and run mcacc, it only takes about 5 minutes, and it'll sound much better with correct delays/levels... if it'll make you sleep better at night, run it again after 50 hours... there are many of us who run autocal every time we move something around in the room...

if nothing else, it'll keep you from reporting results "after break in" that might be, ummm, deceiving*...

"maligned"? still not strong enough a term... that horse has been so beaten to death, there's not even anything left for the vultures to eat...

*not "intentionally deceiving"...

Will do! Thanks again.

And I just checked out your projector project. Wow. Impressive!

Hi everyone,

just registered on the site but am an avid follower/lurker and I've read this thread from start to finish.

Firstly I'd like to put myself in the "entirely happy and hugely impressed" camp with regards to the 1021. Airplay works fine, any drop outs I experience are a network issue, nothing to do with the receiver. Loads of other apps work with Airplay too (Jango, Pandora etc) and I absolutely love it..

I have the lastest firmware but can I quickly ask a stupid question - do I have to download the firmware onto a flash drive to install it (when the new version comes out) or can I do it with the remote with the receiver linked to my router with an ethernet cable?

Finally (and most importantly) is it possible to turn off the video processing and let the Qdeo chip in my OPPO sort the picture out and just have the Pioneer do the sound (btw I don't want to run two hdmi's from the oppo - hdmi 1 goes into the Pioneer - I just want the signal to go straight to my screen and just use the pio for sound) - is this possible?

Otherwise I LOVE the ipod remote app, love the Airplay, love the sound and *touches wood* everything works perfectly.

Just wanted to join the club and ask my noob questions - thanks.

Alex

I know there has been much discussion on both of these topics (seperately) throughout this thread - however - before I pull the trigger on this unit has anybody :

Used ATV for 5.1 main and simultaneously used built - in Airplay for Zone 2?
I want to know for sure I can stream a Netflix video in the main listening area on ATV and listen to it in 5.1 while being able to Airplay in another room using Zone 2 outputs.

Thank You to anyone whom could verify this?

I am heavily considering the 1021, but also thinking about getting the 1020. It's $546 for the vsx-1021 and $368 for the vsx-1020 on Amazon. Are there any reviews you can steer me towards that compares the two receivers? I am wondering if the 1021 is worth the $180 premium. It seems that the threads I see on this topic advise just getting the 1021 because they were similar price, but thats no longer the case. Thanks for any input.

if i understand your question correctly (i.e. atv is connected to the avr via hdmi and feeding the main zone, and you want to use airplay on the avr itself for zone 2), then yes, there's no reason why that should not work*...

the avr doesn't "know" that the atv is an airplay enabled source... it looks like any other hdmi connected source as far as the avr is concerned... side note: the atv wouldn't be using airplay in this scenario, period, so there wouldn't be any potential airplay conflicts anyway...

*whether or not your network is up to the task remains to be seen, but it's not a ton of data, and anything reasonably robust should be fine... however, that's worth noting, as many who report "airplay problems" really have "network problems"...

Chris - Thanks so much for your reply. Yes - realizing network might be burdened - though I don't expect this scenerio should happen too often - I was just wondering if what I hope to do was possible with the receiver
and it looks like it is so............
Curious as to why Pioneer is the only mfg (that I can tell) lets you Airplay to Zone 2 - but oh well.....now off to find the best deal...

Hi everyone,
So first of all i'm french (maybe i shoul have kept it to myself) so sorry for my english,
I purshased the 921k yesterday wich is the 1021k in the US and everything works fine exept one or two things, i can't find how to play .flac files on it and i can't stream music using the HMG, so i thing i have to set up a dlna server on my PC to share files but is there another way to read .flac files?
thanks

@hvuser...

you are welcome...

yea, for any network that is stable, the data rate should be well under what it can handle... what many are finding out (and not realizing, and thus blaming the airplay app) is that their network (especially the wireless portion) isn't as stable as they think it is... imo/ime, you shouldn't have any data bottleneck issues...

why implemented differently? my guess is that the denon implementation is buried very deep in the code, and since this year is merely made up of "incremental changes" (vs. completely redesigned units), they didn't want to go through the effort (and associated testing/followup issues) of changing their implementation...

It does say on page 44 of the manual that not all of the "control with HDMI" functions would work with different brands. Not sure if that statement refers to HDMI passthrough or not but even if it does they should not have listed passthrough as a feature without an asterisk or something. Just my .002
I've had zero problems with this AVR other than the passthrough not working. It's something I really wish would work but not a deal breaker for me.

Just received my 1021-K and I'm about to rip my hair out after playing with it for the last 6 hours.

General setup (as pertains to this post):
FiOS DVR Cable box
Optoma HD20 1080p projector
HTD Level 4 speakers, 5.1 configuration

Via a HDMI cable I connect the output of the cable box to the HDMI 1 input of the receiver, connect the HDMI output from the receiver to the projector. The receiver does not recognize that my HDMI cable is connected and the projector just spools around aimlessly looking for a transmitted signal.

I turn everything off and walk away to browse the forums for a solution. I come back 15 minutes later, turn it all on again (without touching a thing), and BOOM, I have ESPN HD in my face, surround sound working, everything perfect.

I switch to another input to watch a DVD, watch that fine, then go back to the cable box, and we're right back where we started -- with the receiver refusing to believe there's a HDMI cable connected to it.

I've browsed through this thread but only saw one or two instances of this with no posted resolutions one way or the other. Any advice?

Thanks,

jr

Nevermind, I think I figured it out. The projector spooled too fast for the receiver to send the signal (there's that 2-10 second HDMI acquisition period) so it would forever be in limbo. Switched the settings on the projector to be fixed to HDMI Input 1 and voila, about 6 seconds later I'm up and running.

Back to lurking! (Yes, that was my first post in 2+ years of membership!)

I was going to suggest trying different cables but sounds like you're all set.

Has anyone connected a Radeon HD 6870 graphics card via HDMI and gotten it to work?

I do get sound via HDMI but no picture. The receiver will show graphics menus (via HDMI out) and such on my monitor but I do not get the picture from my computer trough the receiver.

It seems like there is a problem in the link between my graphics card and the receiver. I don't know if it a handshake problem or something are wrong with my graphics card, cable, receiver or it is a limitation in HDCP.

So it would be great to know if anyone has successfully connected a graphics card to the receiver.

*** ----> after doing some more testing it seems like everything I connect to "HDMI in" works except for my graphics card! <----***

The graphics card connected directly to the monitor via HDMI works perfectly but not when connected via the receiver, what gives????

Any idea how to solve this?

IT is a Sapphire Radeon HD 6870 with HDCP. The monitor is a HPw2408h with HDCP. Everything has HDCP!

Overall this is the best receiver I have ever owned. I am very happy with it

Does anyone know how to manage favourites through the iControlAV2 app on the iPhone? I can't seem to find any way to add to the favourites - whether Internet Radio stations or DLNA sources on my network. Very strange. Any help welcome! (and of course, I can't figure out how to do it with the receiver's remote control, either)

When it comes to the internet radio stations you have to create and account at

http://pioneer.vtuner.com

To log in for the first time you need the receivers unique code. You can navigate to it with the remote control, use the round navigation multifunktion button on the remote and find it in -> H.M.G. -> internet radio -> help -> get access code.

Be aware the code keeps changing so if it does not work go back and get the current one.

Once logged in at http://pioneer.vtuner.com you can easily pick among among 1800 radiostations and make your own favorites and sub menus. It is all made online and really easy

The v-tuner is by far my favorite feature on the receiver. Love it!!!

Really!!! Very interesting, I had no idea. I assumed I could set up favourites in realtime as I listen to them - I guess that's a bit of a backwards way of managing it, but it's nevertheless a cool feature.

Thanks!

Ok -- I got vTuner configured on the device, so now it links up to the web. But the favourites list remains empty. I created a few groups, added some stations online, but on the receiver (on the iPad anyway) I get nothing in the favourite list. Any idea how I could debug that?...

Make sure you look in the correct Favorite folder. There is a Favorite folder directly under H.M.G. That is not where you have your stations. Keep navigating to internet radio and you will find your Favorite radiostations folder.

So.... H.M.G. -> Internet Radio -> Favorites
