You know, that's a good question. I exchanged several emails with Craig and then just ordered from his CHT site. Not sure if they are the birch or MDF. I just hope they show up by next Saturday so I can give them a good workout and decide if 2 more are necessary.
mine is BB, not sure about the dual front firing ones though.
My CHT speakers finally shipped today after 5 weeks. R&L said they'll be delivered on Monday.
Mine should be shipped within the next few days. My only concern is will 2 of the 18.2's be enough??

So are you replacing your Captivators for 18.2s?

Yes, blame it on Gorilla83 and his quad setup. I've decided to try and duplicate without the DIY part. Ordered 2 of the 18.2's and will power them with a Crest CC4000. If need be I will order another Crest and 2 more 18.2's.

What model captivators?

Looking forward to hearing how they compare with the caps. Report back!

seanile owns the older models with the 12 inch driver and 18 inch passive radiator.
Oh okay. Well, not as interesting now. ;-)
Yes, my Caps are the older version with the passive radiators. My room is on the larger side, it's above a 3 car garage and measures about 48x24x9. That's a lot of room for the speakers to fill. I sit about 12' from the screen and LCR speakers. What I have been after all of these years is to duplicate the feeling of a concert, that full body bass slam. Never came close to finding it till I went to Andrew's place. His setup is exactly what I am looking for.

In 2012 I had the pleasure of seeing Roger Waters perform The Wall 9x (14x including 2010) and I had front row center seats for 4 of the shows. There is absolutely nothing that compares to that experience, especially the sound. I'm hoping with these CHT's it gets me one step closer to my goal. If not then 2 more are on order, if not then I'll add a clone amp....if not I'm going to try and copy/buy Andrew's subs.

That's my story.......

That is a monstrous room! From what you just described, you need clean output and lots of it.

Honestly I don't think 4 18.2s will satisfy you. In your size room I'd go ported...and massive output. 4 caps or 2 orbital Shifters.

I think that will get you that concert Slam you're looking for. Extension would be secondary in my mind.
John - are you sure with the room dimensions? The standard 3 car garage is 24x36 and 4 cars are 24x48. It should be pretty easy to extrapolate with the pair of 18.2s. Every room will sound different, some are drastically different. Remember I have 2 ft thick concrete walls behind my drywall which adds some substantial room gain down low.

Lets see how the pair sounds and go from there.
Hmm, I know it's 9x24 so maybe 21' usable, length maybe I am thinking of the front cutout and rear steps. Maybe 30-35' usable starting from screen wall to rear? I ought to measure it someday so I know for sure!

Patiently waiting......

Ordered on Saturday and sale hasn't even been processed yet. Hopefully it goes from "pending" to the next step and they get shipped to me asap.
Good luck man. My order from 11/29 is getting delivered on Monday 1/7. I was "pending" from 11/29, then "confirmed" on 12/24, and then the items were picked up by R&L Carriers on 1/2. Being spoiled by Amazon Prime and the likes makes it hard to wait so long for something you want.

Oh man, don't tell me that! My subs are made and ready to go. Just need the CC to be processed and get them packed up and shipped! At this rate I should have ordered 4 and got my upgrade bug done all at once.

The amount of time it took to ship your order is not the norm. I have ordered 3 different times and I had product to my door within a week every time.
Should take all of 30 seconds to process a CC order.

Hopefully I get my subs by next Friday.
I thought they were out of subs and speakers and not building new ones. I would say normal shipping times are not expected right now.
They have plenty built and in stock waiting to be shipped. The person who processes the orders is not available all of the time due to a medical reason.

My point is have someone else process the order and get these things moving. They have several orders like mine just waiting to be processed and moved on to the next step.

I know but sometimes a small business only has one person doing it all and anything can cause delays. The good and bad with small companies. These are their left over stock? Are they the dual front firing or dual opposed?

According to Craig they have between 30-35 left of the dual front firing recent generation 18.2s. They are selling them at 800 each until they are out of stock. not bad!

Delays appear to be due to be some friction and miscommunication between the brothers. From the product description, they're MDF over plywood which indicates stock that was made prior to their move to the CA cabinet maker so it's been sitting around for a while.

I've got my fingers crossed that my order gets processed today and gets one step closer to R&L picking them up.

I'm thinking that description is still for the old 18.2 model though...check this out:

SS-18.2P - Passive Cabinet w/drivers
SS-18.2P - Passive Cabinet w/drivers
$950.00
Now In Stock!

This is the passive version (no amplifier included) of the SS-18.2. If you have your own amplifier, this is an excellent choice.
Add a Dayton Amp for $400 (no additional shipping) Note: Other amps are being tested and considered...stay tuned!

The new SS-18.2 has dual 18 inch drivers on the 2 inch thick front baffle. Both drivers are flush mounted, and look so good you may not want the optional grill. This front baffle is optimized to making sure your SS-18.2 does not vibrate. All you will hear is deep, tight bass.
The CraigSUB SS-18.2 subwoofer cabinet has been re-designed to add a veneer of MDF and an upgraded, hard flat black clear coat that greatly improves the fit, finish, and durability that will proudly fit in any decor. It is the same monster performer as the original version, with a relatively small footprint (for a subwoofer with TWO 18" drivers) at a price ($950 plus $195 shipping) that is as stunning as its performance. The level of value and performance rises exponentially with a PAIR of these bad boys at only $1900 (plus $290 shipping).

The SS-18.2P's response curve of +/- 3 dB from 35 Hz to 200 Hz has a natural, 12dB per octave roll-off below 35 Hz designed to match the room gain of a room requiring a subwoofer in this size and price category. All Chase HT subwoofers are designed so that, if placed within a 1/8 wavelength distance from the corner boundary, a theoretical boundary gain of 18 dB is possible. Of course, most of us don't have three foot thick concrete walls and floors so typical boundary gain will be 9 dB –15 dB. The room gain and boundary gain will offset the natural, 12 dB per octave roll-off of a sealed design, as it occurs, resulting in a nearly flat frequency response to 15 Hz or below depending on the room and placement.

Not only will you feel the deep extension of the SS-18.2P, but it hits HARD in the 40Hz – 80Hz range to maximize the chest thumping slam you want for movies, yet is tight and responsive with music. The sealed design makes it all work exceptionally well in a medium, large or extra large room.

Our hardwood plywood is noted for strength and wear-resistance. The enclosure is lightweight, moisture resistant, and has high surface quality and integrity. With the re-design of the enclosure we have added a veneer of MDF, additional finishing steps, and a harder clear coat finish that must pass additional Quality Control inspections. The result is exceptional fit and finish that matches the outstanding performance of the unit. The dual 18” drivers are mounted on opposing sides of the enclosure virtually eliminating vibration. This lack of vibration, coupled with the opposing drivers being close to the bottom of the enclosure, makes the SS-18.2 incredibly stable.

That's the same description I read which reads MDF over plywood which as you recall was done because the all plywood construction was cosmetically challenged. Are you suggesting he went to 100% MDF?

Check out the bolded part above where it refers to the dual opposed design. The newer style cabinets are dual front firing. I'm not sure what material is used though, but I would guess full MDF at that price? All I can do is speculate though. frown.gif

Maybe he'll clear it up.

The 4 orders in the system are supposed to be processed today. Check the CHT website for updates.
