im so tempted to go ahead and order 4

Me too and figure out the amp scenario later.

Hey guys/gals.
I've commissioned the legendary Graham Perkins to design a ported, low tuned enclosure for this beast of a driver, and I'm looking for input from the community.

My intent is to come up with a design that meets the requirements of the majority.
If you've got any interest in a Graham-designed enclosure for this driver, you could save a few bucks on the design fees by buying this one.

We're trying to determine ideal and realistic targets for:
Enclosure volume
Tuning
Port 1st resonance
Anything else you're concerned with

I'd love to hear any and all opinions, even if they're not one of those specs.
Put in your two cents here, or where this got started, at HTS.

Legendary? LOL. I hope you're not actually paying for that.

Ported? I wouldn't use this driver without a pair of AE PR-18 passive radiators

It's just be a waste.
Yeah. The Pi18 is just asking to be used with PR's.
Is it feasible to do an LLT with PRs?
Minus the large lol
Yeah a couple of PR's would be sweet... pity they'd cost half the cost of the driver :/

I'm also not a fan of a slot port that wide and short, I'd definitely like to see something at least a little more squarish.

Dude, you havnen't even heard this driver sealed, ported or with PR's and you can even quote anything as far as. This thing works very well ported. It's a preference based on people's perception of sound and what things sound like without even hearing what the thing sounds like. Gosh you must have that majic ball mate.

The old Mach audio driver was great in a ported alignment and the this will be the same.

Amazing!!!!

Marks drivers are designed to be ported. He even told me straght out that ported is the best solution. It's awesome that they will work sealed and with pr's really well. It's a win win for every situation

Um, it has nothing to do with sound quality and/or perception It's a simple matter of squeezing out the last few infrasonic decibels without vent compression.

The driver is already not even hitting xmax with an EP4000. That's fine - I prefer to be amp limited than driver limited. But I hate to be PORT limited.

# sims:
Ported 340L, 14.2Hz
PR 340L 14.2Hz
Sealed Q=0.5 (~150L)

PRs are 2 AE PR18-1600 and the tuning for the ported was to make it the same as these two PR and the Pi18 came to in the same enclosure.

FR Comparison:

Excursion Comparison:

PR Excursion:

Port Air Speed:

And here are the same with a 13Hz 2nd order Butterworth HPF added.

The second batch are because I'd done the original sims with it in and didn't notice but thought they might still be of interest.

Ports are a fraction small if you want to wring everything out of the sub and could be increased a bit to keep PAS under 10% Mach. They are simple flush in the sim and don't have roundovers to minimise chuffing which port placement will likely have an effect on too. At the sim'd levels the PRs will likely be noisier than the ports and may be damaged.

Both resonant types can use the 13Hz BW2 to reign in excursion and with or without this, the PR rolls off quicker into the lower infra.

In searching driver options, one particular model I was considering ended up having an Le of 5.25mh (though not listed on their site with all the other parameters) which seems to imply a very limited bandwith before things go south. Why are all the parameters listed for the Pi 18 and still no inductance numbers? If the driver is complete and ready for sale then why omit any parameters? From what I've read, Le is not the be all end all but more importantly how it changes with excursion but why not just list it?

Have you asked M5?
No, it was not as much about what the LE is but more about why list every parameter but that one.

Two PI18's ordered for a dual opposed sealed sub.

You just need 2 more for the matching one.
Good...now onto to someone here actually starting a build thread with one of those babys...

Direct or from Brisbane? I emailed Affordable drivers when they were announced and was told to sign up for the newsletter to wait for availability info and have received nothing yet. He wouldn't even take a deposit then.

I'll be interested to hear what you think of them when they arrive. I'm going to wait for local stock, as I'm cheap and not in a hurry.

Sweet!! Are you going to be able to measure the sub's T/S and confirm specs and whatnot?

same here, gotta get the new screen and all that jazz up first anyways

Got my first Mach5 PI-18 (of 2). I am using it in a IB setup. Probably not a typical use for that driver, but I wanted the flexibility of using the driver in a sealed or ported box if my IB idea doesn't pan out. Also, I wanted to support the launch of the new driver.

First impressions - the cone is very nice. The carbon fiber looks great. The magnet stack is impressive. At around 70 lbs - not a light driver. Not a hand-smasher like the LMS-5400, but not too light either. Just listened to music so far, sounds great with that. Powering it with 1 channel of a FP14000 - trying to be careful with the power. Going to watch a movie later this weekend to get an idea of the output below 20 Hz. Currently using a SSF @ 10 Hz - non-defeatable on the Peavey equalizer. Might start looking at another equalizer.

I was originally thinking of 4 of these drivers in an IB - now I'm thinking 2 will do it. Thank you to the Mach5 guys for giving us another choice in the 18" driver market!
Awesome!!! First post of someone who has actually received their order.

Great to hear you like it.

I'm noobish to diy but I'm getting ready to build a sealed box. I was considering an LMS but this looks promising for the cost. I have yet to get all into winISD but I believe I read that this thing should do quite well with 5 or 6 cubes?

Power will be an EP4000 (amazon has them 10% off right now ).

Thoughts?

Anyone have a sub up and running with one yet?
5 or 6 cubes sealed is on the large side for one driver.
