I have seen pics of the Maelstrom-X and I have seen pics of the PI. It is clearly obviouse from the pictures that the PI sounds better than the Maelstrom-X

I'm still waiting to see how these perform as well as the new 18s that are coming out. It's nice to know what's around, and the current 18" marketplace is not what it was last year =[

Just wondering what is the easiest way to test a woofer or any driver for that matter?

I will be getting some clones in the future and just want to make sure of the T/S before designing. I have designed from the companies T/S but dont know if I can trust them.

Get a basic SL woofer tester.

Depending on who the driver manufacturer is the results will either be fairly close or way off.

Would the Dayton WT3 be good enough or is there something else?

I am sure there is better out there but this is just a one off type of thing. I might use the thing 3 times and thats it.

It's no klippel but pretty darn good. Could always sell it to one of the other guys on the forum. Or maybe see if you can borrow one. You're in Australia correct? There's lots of diyers out that way. Maybe someone has a woofer tester. Diyaudio forum has some serious australian diyers amongst its fold. Maybe see if someone can test your drivers for you.

Course depending on the manufacturer it may not be worth it as they may have pretty good tolerances.

Yes in Australia. I just saw the SL woofertester II but is that all I need also. Both are relatively cheap. I dont mind spending the money for one because most people on this forum are 10 hours plus away from me.

PLUS I will most likely be using 8-10 clone woofers and just want to make sure they are all the same. Then I can do some damage.

If you're using 8-10 drivers I would get one of the basic ones.

it can be derived from the other data. 89db 1w1m sensitivity. 0.49% efficient.

I emailed Mark a couple of days ago about the availability of the Pi-18s and he essentially said that it would be around mid-Feb. So I want to build 4 small (3-4cuft.) sealed subs using 2 FP1400 clones. Are there any alternatives available right now (or by Christmas) for a high excursion 18" for sealed boxes (excluding the LMS)?

I would think you need to hurry up and either get some subs on shelves already or you will be waiting until at least Jan. Xmas on the way and things usually get very busy.

There are many many different threads from people wanting different things from subs. SO how low you want to go is I think the biggest one next to budget. If I wanted higher tuned bass I would have just went with a prodriver. But for the money AE is hard to beat.

That being said if Feb. is the outlook on these the 21's are going to take about a year to make. WOW. I dont mind waiting but WOW. Never thought this.

I never said anything about the 21s. Mark was only referring to my question about ordering 4 Pi-18s.

Is the mid-Feb estimate for if you were to order now, or for the people who are at the front of the line?

Pick your spl wants, extension and budget and many can suggest you drivers to use.

Extension to 5Hz is most important with output good to 10dB below reference (avg. listening volume in ~2000 cuft.). Sealed only. Budget is secondary, but I want to avoid paying for the LMS if I can. I have 2 THTs for ~25Hz and up already. Basically, since I'm in the Mach 5 thread, I'm asking for suggestions for something similar to the Pi-18.

I generally agree and wonder at the laziness of folks engaged in these discussions.

The Pi specs tell us claimed X-max and Sd which is all you need to calc displacement.

8 liters. You can then calc output at 10 Hz at X-max = 97.08dB.

The Fi Q specs tell us claimed X-max and Sd.

6.69 liters. 95.65dB. A difference of 1.43dB.

The Q-18 claims 92dB, 1W/1M. The Pi-18 claims 92.9dB 2.83v/1M, but it's a 4 ohm driver, so they're cheating 3dB. It would actually be:

Fi Q-18: 92dB 1W/1M, 6.69L @ X-max, 95.65dB @ 10 Hz @ X-max.
Pi-18: 89.9dB 1W/1M, 8.00L @ X-max, 97.08dB @ 10 Hz @ X-max.

The difference I see is in the drivers compliance, the Pi being the higher compliance driver. After messing with dozens and dozens of drivers, I tend to lean toward the sonic sig of a stiffer suspension driver, but the difference is slight enough that I agree... not many could pick a difference given same alignment, same upstream hardware and same calibration/playback levels.

Drivers haven't shipped, and the ones that have showed up damaged.

The packaging is being beefed up for the next batch shipping in Feb and after.

Also I don't think drivers are being shipped out that are completed already until the new packaging is made.
