I emailed Mark regarding where my order was at and he replied that he is getting a packaging company to make new shipping boxes which are much stronger due to damaged drivers arriving at their location. My bad for not posting up.

Maybe, but shouldn't there be some kind of rep or someone who can relay information/market the product? I would think the expense would far far far outweigh not having information available. Especially with a product with as much potential as the Pi18's.

Where are pictures of the subwoofer? And where is his website? I can't seem to find any information on them.

Is there any reason this 18 can not be used from 25hz-300hz?

I was thinking of the TD18h for this but after shipping the 18H will be about 650 each where as the Mach/Pi will be cheaper. But if the Mach will sound like crap at 200-300 then I might as well save for the 18H.

Just wondering what every one else thought. Sims look good for most subwoofers to be able to place up to 500hz but that is not always reality.

And I think I just answered my own question. From 50hz on up the 18H is a monster compared to the Mach 18. Mach does better down low but I was just looking for a cheaper option for the 25/30-300hz.

The large inductance (and no idea of Le(x)) will give about 9dB drop at 300Hz from 80Hz or so. Plus having a high excursion driver working hard on deep LF will likely cause audible FMD up through the lower voice range when it starts working hard. For the cleanest sound in the main audio BW, I try to limit excursion as well as using the cleanest, low distortion units I can and keep the LF heavy lifters rolled off below that.

Caveat: no one has measured these yet.

Why do you need them to work to 25Hz?


Sims are usually based around small signal response, and don't reflect how the driver will be behaving near Xmax.

Sims aren't going to tell you much >100hz for a subwoofer driver. Also, nobody knows anything really about these drivers. No tests, no measurements that I've seen. With that said, how many subwoofer drivers do you know of that are 'good' past 200hz? As in... an actual subwoofer. TCSounds LMS-U comes to mind. Dayton's RSS series. Old style Adire Brahmas maybe. Aurasound? Umm...

As it stands, these are still vaporware. I know they are supposed to return soon but they don't seem to exist now. I remember somebody got some when they first shipped but I've heard nothing but crickets since. It's all speculation at this point.

Thanks A9X and SCott. I said 25hz just to limit the excursion. Everytime I looked at the AE drivers I never really wanted them to get to high on excursion either. SO I tended to Hpas around 25-28hz 2nd order.

Just figured I would do the same with this sub but excursion is still higher than expected.

So it looks like the 18H or other drivers from AE will work better. I also think the 15X will be another possibility for me instead of the bigger 18h. But we'll see.

ANd in regards to the lowest notes of the AE or other driver reaching it was just a matter of limiting excursion for better SQ up to 2-300hz.

SO A9X basically said what I was worried about with this woofer.

I'm glad it helped, but my answer was fairly generic. What specifically are you trying to do, what drivers, tunings and frequency bands etc?

As an example, I'm using TD15 for my mains, but only expect them to go the 60Hz or so. The linear motors and high capacity are being used so they run conservatively and don't ever need to go near Xmax, even at > reference levels and keep distortion low at all time up to 300Hz xover (2 TD15/main speaker). I also have a bunch of sub drivers that will do from 60Hz or so down to very low. I would not use either a TD18 or an IXL18 to do from 25 to 300Hz, though the TD would be the preferred option of the two.

I am just needing a driver to do 35-300 roughly. I will probably be using a 1120 PHL or other. I will listen to the BC 6MD38 against the 1120. AND then go from there.

I have not decided how low I would want the bass driver to go.35 sounded low enough but with all honesty and having subs I think 50 might be low enough also.

I still have few more months to go before I start listening to PHL's and BC's. They will be paired with the TPL-150. I am tired of looking at simulations and really just need to hear them and then go from there.

35Hz is low enough for almost all music and with some of the drivers discussed, could be done with a sealed enclosure and EQ. Any of the AE TD15/18 except the M, most pro 18's, but some would be better than others.

I'm sure I've mentioned to you in the past I have a friend with a 5 way mainly PHL based 2ch system that is probably the best I've ever heard*. With the PHL7030 sealed and using a gob of EQ, I have never seen the cone move more than a couple of mm even at high SPL. And we can listen loud at his place, and we usually do.

He had the 1120 in his when a 3 way, but now the mains are 4 way (18,10,6.5,dome) he is using the 1660. I'll email him and ask what he'd recommend as choice in the 3 way application.

As a later project, I'm going to get some 6MD38 as mids. Having had the Audax flat foam surround drivers, I'm not completely convinced by them, irrespective of what I said above.

50Hz gives even more options such as pro 15's.

This sounds like something I would want also. But those bigger drivers from PHL are not cheep.

I just figured I would build once and enjoy. These will go into a small dedicated HT room. I plan on building them and then using them in my normal, horrible acoustic living room. Then after I save the rest of the money I will then build the HT room. Can only afford to do so many things at once so I figured I will build the mains first then the room.

I always hear about people using big drivers and at stupid loud they dont move much. Thats what I would want also but I know there is more to it then just that.

I look forward to hearing what he suggests in a 3 way. How is he powering his 5 way?

I will be using 3 amps in the beginning and using the Mini DSP's for EQ.

After simulating so many different drivers, for the first time, I am looking more forward to build these supposedly great sounding mains than a subwoofer.

Oh and I forgot to add doesn't making a 5 way multiple more things to go wrong?

I have limited knowledge so I dont know. I can simulate but that wont tell you about the nulls and everything else I dont know about.

I am sure all of these company's are being extra cautious after what happened to Exodus. There really is no recourse if you get screwed by one of these Chinese build houses.

I know Mark makes his drivers in N. America but his soft parts probably come from China.
