LG PASSIVE LW6500 dedicated thread... - Page 41

Hold on a second. did someone say that you can activate the Dolby digital pass through (HDMI in to optical out) via the Service menu?
I did not see that in the Service menu. Can you elaborate?

also for the ones playing with the media server capabilities in the LG... yes for sure it will not play some formats and in particular audio formats and this has nothing to do with 3D or DLNA or UPnP. Also some content will play bad and this si because the video processor must be slow. I am shooting from a media server a 3D movie in 720p, compressed so no DVD quality and it comes very pixelated! I did the same thing via PS3 and here you go no problem! Both were doing this over ethernet (yes.. PS3 had GB ethernet versus 100BaseT in LG but again the content was not such a high bit rate) so at the end if you don't watch Netflix or Vudu etc.. the media server in these TVs is somehow not worth the money or effort to build in. PS3 or other media player (like popcorn hour) will play all you need except mkv in PS3.
thanks!

Just enabled THX Bright Room on my 47" ..wow what a difference!! I added extra contrast and brightness as Mchaney did.. Fantastic.

Any work around getting a DTS audio file to play on USB?

Thought maybe the TVs internal media player might run 3d videos at 120hz as compared to 60 hz when I run my HTPC. The few people that mention it don't like the internal media player, but it looks better than my HTPC but only for 3d I think. I only watch movies on my HTPC but have included the TV's media player now. Still searching to find why the 3d looks better with the internal media player.

Im trying to access the service menu with my Harmony 700 with the steps provided in this link ( http://openlgtv.org.ru/wiki/index.ph..._menus_/_modes ), but with no success.

#1 Access http://members.harmonyremote.com and log on with your credentials.
I get this:

then:

then:

and cant open it with anything, its just a white thumb nail.

So Ive tried just going to step #2
#2 Once logged on, go to this specific address: http://members.harmonyremote.com/Eas...owInfrared.asp.

#3 On that page, click "Select an active device" and choose your LG TV.
When I select "Select an active device" I get nothing:

So I'm stuck!
What am I doing wrong?

Sidebite.. yeah I know the frustration as I spent 2 hrs just getting my harmony to work also. The harmony software is very frustrating.

Looks to me like you have an old version already on your computer. You need to log into the old account and then delete that device or remote or add a new one. If not just set up a new account.different name etc..Then add your device(your TV model number) and sync your remote to it after you have added the infrared code.

Also I did a Q&A search on Harmony which helped me. ..such as "Add a new remote"

Thanx Ray,
I got it to update and I also got all the codes in and synced the remote, but I don't see the Service Menu on the Harmony Software like stated on step 11, or on the LCD like stated on step 13.
Where might they be located?
Ugh...If it wasn't for the dang pass-through I wouldn't give a crap.
Thanx

It's not there... you have to put it there. I fell for that too: what it means is that it is available, but you still have to add it to a custom button. Go to the screen where you customize buttons and on a new/unused button, pick the TV and drop it down and you'll see "Service Menu" in the drop down. Select that and NOW it should be on the remote.

To activate the DD 5.1 passthrough, there's an entry in one of the screens labeled "AC3 EDID D/L". Click on that and then click "Start". All the lines should populate with "OK". After that, close the service menu and turn the TV off/on and you should have DD 5.1 passthrough.

Mike,

After reading all 41 pages on the LW6500 sets with particular interest in the 65LW6500 and your service menu discoveries I have one thing that keeping bugging me about the local dimming on the 65LW6500 set. Why do think that Vizio can get 32 zones of dimming on there 65" XVT3D650SV set and LG doesn't have it available out of the box even though the use the same panel?

Thanks,
Fred

The sets do not use the same TCON(timing control) electronics and connections between tbe TCON and the panel.

ok does putting the service menu on harmony remote and all that good stuff brings me to this question if i do this would it void my warranty since i think this could be considered hacking

Does enabling DD 5.1 passthrough let you add delay before it sends out via optical? My receiver doesn't have delay compensation.

Also, does enabling the extra THX modes get you anything that you couldn't do by hand using Expert1 or whatever?

Yes. There's a delay/sync setting in the audio menu. As far as the THX, that's unknown at this point. I posted the THX settings a few pages back and I suspect if you make the same settings in the Expert modes, you'll probably get the same thing. Then again, I've never compared them so I don't know for sure.

I doubt it for two reasons. First, the way this whole thing got started is that a friend of ours called LG service and complained that his 65LW6500 had no local dimming. They sent a tech out and he "fixed" it by doing exactly what we do in the service menu to activate local dimming on that set. I can't see how the THX or DD 5.1 settings would be any different. Second, you could always go back into the service menu and turn those options off before you got warranty service anyway and no one would be the wiser.

This has been a great thread. Thanks for sharing all of this information mchaney. I had to setup a 5 second delay on the TV audio menu to get the audio/video syncronized. As soon as I enabled the 5.1 setting in the service menu and disabled the audio syn I could tell a difference with audio. Local dimming was already enabled on my 55LW6500. The THX settings are great. I used the slight tweaks mentioned earlier and couldn't be happier with the set. The Standard mode was always a bit too bright and too sharp for my taste, but I don't have the tools needed to make the changes.

I went to Radioshack earlier and bought the cheap Logitech Harmony 600 to get in the service menu. I needed a remote anyway, as my last Harmony broke last year.

One thing about 3d on my TV is that it doesn't exactly pop out of the TV. There are certain places, like menus that really pop, or certain scenes you can tell were meant to pop out at you, but they are rare. Take Pirates of the Caribbean 4 - swords/gun barrels look a bit blurry when they are supposed to be outside the screen with any depth. That said, the 3D looks great, even if it's mostly 3D in the screen or just outside of the screen. I'd like to buy the LG demo to see how it looks here at home.

All in all I've been happy with the TV since I bought it in September. These service menu tweaks make it even better.

That I can understand that but why is it that LG who developed the panel can't get local dimming to work and has it locked out but Vizio who sources the panel from LG has no problem doing it. I've looked at both and can definitely tell a difference on the Vizio with their smart dimming which really helps with the black levels. The smart dimming on the Vizio and that it can now be bought for under 2k has me leaning towards it.

Has LG started shipping the 65LW6500 with local dimming enabled? I noticed that FRY's is advertising it as having local dimming and a new ad from Conn's today also list it as having local dimming. Now I'm just as confused as before.

I doubt it. I just bought a Fry's 65LW6500 less than 2 weeks ago and had to enable local dimming through the service menu. It's just the confusion with the differences of each of the LW6500s I would guess.

First Q:

Just before I authorized purchase @ $1579 for this 55" lw6500,
i read from lg.com that is only has 16 LED Zones.

Isn't that small since I had read in other threads the questions on other TVs being 96-288+ zones.

Is that why the LG looks really bad (images not tight, letters not squared off, general motion and other 'blurriness' hard to dexscribe but images not tight at all) to others in all NYC stores when I see it?

Is this not a factor and is everyone happy with 55lw6500's 2d regular tv mode as the sotres do not even hhavew them connected with hdmi cable let alone other essentials!

[I must get the non-active 3d due to a seizure condiiton (oh my!) where strobes and coffee and more anre excluded]

I don't know whether it has been discussed or not but looking at the EZ Adjust screen shot posted by mchaney, under Tool Option 1, Maker, it shows AUO. Does this mean the panel is made by AU Optronics and not LG. Is it just 65" that has AUO next to "Maker"? Just wondering.
Does anyone know why some of these options were removed? Why does the 65LW6500 have it's Local Dimming removed? Has anyone gotten a response from LG on this? I guess if it doesn't work right in that model then they might take it out and would probably would not admit to that.

no, just decode DTS movie into AC3 5.1 sound with 'Freemake Video Converter'. Also make sure you use 48kHz, with 44 it does not seem to play sound on TV itself.

You also need to open service menu and allow AC3 output via optical link.

Thanks I am going to do that.. was hoping for a easier solution. The AC3 output you mention..Is that the same enable as the 5.1 passthrough?

Also FWIW I bought my 47" last week and it had Local Dimming already enabled from the factory. I didnt have to enable it.

Does anybody have a recommendation for a matching cabinet? I'm getting the 55", so something around the same width. Also, if I want to play 3D content from a PC, what's the best format this TV supports? Full SBS? HDMI frame packing?

I bought my 55LW6500 2 Weeks ago and it had local dimming enabled out of the box with options of setting it to off/low/medium/high.

Yes, the 65 is different from the 55.

On page 128 in the manual it shows all the formats that it is compatible with.

Just a clarification... enabling the pass through for DD 5.1 will still leave you in the air for DTS. My problem is not having a AV receiver that can pass 3D and would go with all HDMI inputs in the TV instead and pass audio via optical to the AVR. But... I can't pass DTS down.

Has anyone been able to do an accurate input lag test with the LW6500 series?
Just thought I'd mention that the 47LW6500 I received today had factory enabled local dimming.
