I also hate the soap opera effect...hate it even for soap operas...not that i watch any though :-) some folks like it for animation...i hate it for that as well. AMP clear is the way to go for someone like you and me.

Thanks, setting to Clear did the trick, what a difference.

After some calibration and tweaking, I'm now quite happy with the picture overall, it looks great. Were it not for the flashlighting in the corners, I'd be 100% satisfied.

I believe the flashlighting is not a defect but rather an inherent aspect of edge-lit LED's. I believe how apparent they are depends on a) room lighting and b) backlight setting. I think ALL of these TV's have the flashlighting and how noticeable they are depends on the above. They are too even and regular to be a random defect. All four corners present the exact same pattern, though the intensity varies slightly per corner. I believe it's a light leak point based on design.

Time will tell if I can get used to them. I mostly watch at night, with a dark room, so perhaps I should look into some ambient lighting or something.

It's too bad Samsung and other manufacturers can't address this issue better in terms of design. I suppose most likely don't notice it and/or care about it? My wife (who usually could care less about stuff like this) noticed the flashlighting as well, though it doesn't bother her...must be a guy thing.

Try lower the Backlight and see if it would help. I have mine set at 6. I know many of you would think it is too low, but it is plenty bright enough for me and I seldom see flashlight or clouding any more. I think the led will lose light output over time and I will have to increase the Backlight in a few years.
After a few weeks of use, I can up mine to 10 and see minimal flashlighting or clouding. I usually leave it at 8 though, just to keep me from looking for it at every scene transition.

Has anyone been able to connect their iPhone to the UN46D6000SFXZA USB and play both iPhone music, pics and video?
Yes this TV does not do FULL 3D 1080p HD. At least I can confirm mine doesn't. It down scales the image making it look blocky.

I have emailed the store i purchased it from.

If I get a refund, would anyone know what panels are found in the d7000 and their viewing angles?

I have a CN01 and my viewing angles suck. I may go sony XBR with local dimming, but the samsung design is a lot better.
How do you know for sure it does not have 1080p on the tv?

Question
1. Where are you getting your TV signal from? Cable, antenna or ?

2. Is the signal going thru anything before it get to yur TV?

3. Have you modified anything in the tv configuration since you got it?
If you did have you tired to reset to factory defaults?

Sorry, I meant does not do FULL 3D 1080p.

2D 1080p is okay.

I downloaded a test image in 2d, and the same image in 3d. (both L,R pictures were the same 2d image)

So when the tv alternates the two 3d images should of looked exactally a like.

They didn't. The 1080p 3D image was downscaled and made to look blocky. The 2D showed up fine.

I was viewing it using the TV's internal picture viewer.

Here is some info for anyone searching who happens to be finicky about the picture on these sets.

I have a UN55D6500, 2 UN32D5500s, and 1 UN40D6300 (had).

The UN40D6300 had a consistent dark blob a few inches down from the top, centered in the screen, about 4 inches wide and an inch high. Beyond that, it had other random dark blobs all over the place.

The important part is that I had FIVE (5) of these (thanks to Amazon for free shipping back) - 4 were H301 revision with an April 2011 manufacture date and 1 was an H301 with an August 2011 manufacture date. All of them exhibited the same picture problem, which was particularly annoying on white/light colored images.

In the end, Samsung didn't care..I went with a UN46D6300 hoping that a different size/panel would be the cure, and sure enough, it's perfect - Just like all of the other ones I have (minus flashlighting and dark screen uniformity, but that's just the price you pay for edge lit LED and LCD technology as a whole)...

Most people might not notice this kind of defect, but if you are reading these forums, you are probably one of the ones that will...

Also, Amazon was more than willing to do all of the exchanges for free, and even continued price matching them as the price dropped slightly over time. Beyond excellent service...

when i plug in my mp3 player, smart hub won't play any music. it says no files found? 2 gigs of mp3s on there.........this smartv should be able to scan device too. it makes u manually pick directories, all of which i've done & it opens them but refuses to display my mp3s. any ideas>?

I've read on some other threads that edge lit LCD's have dark spots, but how bad of a dark spot is acceptable? Here's a picture of mine: (dark spots on left)

The whole area should be uniformly gray. Here are some more pics:

photo.omnistep.com/samsungtv

(the forum won't let me post URL's yet, but you know what to do - add http in front of that)

Is this abnormal?

Costco has a 3 yr warranty, so I can make use of it if necessary.

Hey all! Any help would be super appreciated!

Best Buy is having its Black Friday sale on the; 55" LED Samsung 1080p 120hz (UN55D6000S ) for $999.99

Currently I have a; 40" LCD Samsung 1080p 120hz (LNT4071F) (the famous origin of the TBE - I think). Bought it for ~$1,600 (boy times have changed).

Is this a good upgrade? Ive been hearing a ton about the flashlighting and that has me scared. But I really want a bigger TV!!! I'll mainly be using it for gaming (a lot) and bluray movies. In a nice spacious apartment, with low day light.

Please point me in the direction so I know if its worth the wait/money! Thank you!!!

I would exchange that. Those are pretty bad. I have 2 D series sets and haven't seen dark spots on either. I get the opposite which is clouding but they're very minor and can only be seen on an all dark screen whereas those dark spots on your pics show up in different backgrounds. Would definitely not settle with that if I were you.

That's a pretty good deal for a D6000. As long as they have a liberal exchange policy I don't see why not. If you're not happy within a certain time period can always take it back.

That's a very good price IMHO. A place by me, American TV, had it on sale last week for $1097. I brought the ad into my local , closer BB (they had it for $1499) and would match Americans' price. I didn't buy it in hopes of a better price on Black Friday. Thanks for the heads up!! Wife and I don't like the 3D effect and don't need the web browser so this TV would be a great fit for our needs. I hate the thought of shopping on BF but I think I'll pick it up in high hopes of getting a good panel. IIRC their return policy is 14 days.

Edit: I just looked up the BB Black Friday ad and it lists a model 6003, a BB Exclusive, not a 6000. And a minimum of 12 per store. They'll probably be long gone by time I get there as with out of town family guests in for Thanksgiving I'm not camping out at 9:00 PM the night before to try to get one .

For the record, I've been shopping the black friday week (and not it seems like 1/2 a month) for years and have /never/ been compelled to step into a store. I honestly can't imagine that there is enough of a savings by standing in line. The deals online are specTACular.

Whats the different between 6000 and 6003??

Also is there a better ~55" TV for 1000bucks? I wouldn't mind doing LCD. How cheap are LCDS compared to LEDS now indays?

I think the 6003 a 6000 made exclusively for BB. Hence no price matching at competing local places if BB runs out. IMHO it's a great TV for $1000 +/-.
Hey everyone new to this community. Thanks for the help in advance. I am looking to purchase a new LCD-LED TV to replace my Viore 46 inch. I want to get one for black Friday and am looking to purchase a tv in the $600-$800 range. The tv's that I have researched and selected that I am not sure what I want to buy are as follows.

46" Samsung LED 1080p 120Hz HDTV UN46D6050
46" Hitachi LED 1080p 120Hz LE46S605
LG 47LV4400 47" LED HDTV

Out of these 3 TV's which will provide me with the best picture, least amount of LED screen bleed. They are all similar in price range and really it has come down to which is truly the best.

Thanks

Do any of you D6000 owners experience washed out blacks when viewing 720p?

Nope! I can't tell the difference in picture quality between 1080i and 720p. Both have beautiful pictures.

Are you changing the source and cables going between 720 and 1080? (maybe 1080p over HDMI and 720p over component? etc)
I was asking about this recently on a more generic thread and while I prepare to follow the troubleshooting suggestions given to me there I thought I would bring it to the thread for the actual TV model. My mother's new TV was displaying 720p cable channels with very washed out blacks and when I would turn the cable box off, there would be a light gray square on the screen where the 720p display had been. The 1080i channels displayed with dark blacks and the screen was pitch black when I turned off the cable. I'm getting a blu-ray player and will see if I can output a 720p movie to the TV and find out if I get the same washed out blacks. I just replaced my mother's cable box and it outputs every channel in 1080i including the 720p ones. Now the 720p channels have dark blacks and a much sharper picture. I'm wondering what sort of picture quality other owners of the model are getting with 720p sources displayed at 720p.
Have you tried checking your settings when the TV is at 720p. For some reason, I seem to remember having to adjust the brightness, contrast, etc at each resolution initially.

I adjusted the backlight and contrast without improvement, and I was advised to adjust the "black tone" setting and that did improve the blacks quite a bit but not to the level of the 1080i programming and the darker setting made the 1080i content look too dark. Fortunately, the new cable box fixed the viewing problem for my mother but I'm still curious to know what the original problem was. I'll know more when I'm able to display 720p from a source other than the cable so I can rule out either the TV or the cable system as the culprit.

Expanded sends the RGB range to the tv, 0-255, this makes the image much too dark. Some "think" that this means the graphics improve, because the colors appear more saturated and the image appears to have more depth. Reality is that you can get teh same effect by setting your xbox to standard and lowering the brightness setting. The same goes for Expanded. You need to turn your brightness way up to bring the dark detail back, and by that time the image looks just like "standard" did.

Picture mode: Standard
Backlight: 12 (see above explanation for adjustment advice)
Contrast: 85
Brightness: 45
Sharpness: 35 (the default 50 is WAY to high, and causes many problems, including enhancing noise)
Color: 50 (slight over saturation, no clipping)
Tint: 50/50

Advanced
Black tone: off
Dynamic contrast: Medium (wont clip dark detail through its dynamic range paired with brightness @ 45)
Shadow detail: -2 (one of my favorite features, if it doesn't bother you, ensures your contrast stays great in dark scenes)
Gamma: 0
Color space: Native (the tamed green and slightly enhanced red of this Samsung created color gamut pairs very well with the Warm 1 overly blue color temp. Appears very balanced to the eye, although does not conform to the standard for motion picture. Standard color temp is way too blue, and begins to visually destroy color fidelity in comparison)
White balance: off
Flesh tone: 0
Edge enhancement: on
Motion lighting: off
Led motion plus: off

Picture options:
Color tone: warm 1
Digital noise filter: off
Mpeg noise filter: off
HDMI Black level: low
Film mode: auto 2 (or greyed out)
Auto motion plus: Clear

System

Hello!

Thank you for this info!

I would like to know if you use this settings for everything (HD movies, XBOX, SD television, etc.).

Avoid any settings where people use "dark" black level, etc, as they are clipping details and didn't use test patterns to create there settings.

The SECOND set of settings (the "Standard" mode ones) are what I use 99% of the time and they look stunning. The out of the box standard settings are too dynamic and harsh.

Enjoy!

For Critical Movie viewing, and conforming to the Motion Picture Standard:

Picture mode: Movie
Backlight: 12 (dark room backlight 10) (see above explanation for adjustment advice)
Contrast: 85
Brightness: 44 (ensures video black is as deep as possible while maintaining full shadow detail)
Sharpness: 20 (sure, 0 introduces no enhancement, but it creates an out of focus appearance you don't experience at the movie theatre. 20 is actually quite realistic)
Color: 48 (balanced)
Tint: 50/50

Advanced
Black tone: off
Dynamic contrast: off
Shadow detail: +2
Gamma: 1
Color space: Auto (confusing with the name "Auto", but this is the color gamut that aligns with Rec 709)
White balance: off
Flesh tone: 0
Edge enhancement: off
Motion lighting: off
Led motion plus: off

Picture options:
Color tone: warm 2
Digital noise filter: off
Mpeg noise filter: off
HDMI Black level: low
Film mode: auto 2 (or greyed out)
Auto motion plus: Clear or Off

System
Eco sensor: off

Now here is a second set of settings, and this is an option for those who simply want to see how well this set can perform OUTSIDE of the standards used in motion picture and television. These settings will look stunning with animation both hand drawn and computer generated, and look stunning with video games.

For the most visually stunning performance of the set outside the Motion Picture standard (without clipping any details):

Sand, sunlight and skin will appear more realistic)
White balance: off
Flesh tone: 0
Edge enhancement: on
Motion lighting: off
Led motion plus: off

Picture options:
Color tone: warm 1 ("standard" color temp was way to blue. Warm 1 improves matters. Although still overly blue, it does not wash out colors with a radically blue grayscale.)
Digital noise filter: off
Mpeg noise filter: off
HDMI Black level: low
Film mode: auto 2 (or greyed out)
Auto motion plus: Clear

System
Eco sensor: off

I just received my new UN46D6000SF TV yesterday as a replacement to my old Samsung 46" A850 bedroom TV.

My first impressions:
  • Nice slim form-factor. ( October 2011 Build)
  • Out-of-the-box Standard setting was a visual assault ( quickly solved by Redwolf4k's settings recommendations in this forum)
  • Thank you Redwolf4k. Your settings are excellent for this TV !
  • I am very impressed with the Samsung Smart Hub--I think this is the future and Samsung is leading the pack. To me there is no need to buy any other streaming devices or something like Google TV for streaming services. I also really like the ability to down load additional apps
  • My TV has significant flash-lighting on the bottom left/right corners ( the worst I have seen on any TV). I tried loosening the screws on each corner but that didn't help at all. Flashlights disappear of course as soon as I get some content on the screen--however, watching anything with the top/bottom black bars is pretty distracting. I'll continue to scan this forum for recommendations to limit the flash-lighting.
