Depends on the panel used in the particular tv.
I saw in the store a 46D6500 (German model) and a 60D6500.
The 46" one had a very small viewing angle, one step beside and everything got washed out, the 60" had no problems at all, was almost like Plasma or like the more expensive 55D8090

I got a question guys, has anybody called a technician to come and check out the muffling tv speakers? Did they fix them?

If the volume is barely midway or a little higher they muffle/hum/buzz on certain male voices. I noticed it right when I got the set but didn't think much of it, though I feel like calling a tech out here before my warranty is up.

AH, bummer. Any way to tell what panel's in the 55 inch version from the outside? Or is my only choice to open the box and look at the set itself?
Brad, yes, the panel model will be listed on the sticker on the outside of the box.
For example it will say "Version CN07". This is the panel I have on my 46D6000 and it exhibits zero of the problems common to this thread. Good luck!

You can PM me if you'd like me to send you a picture of what the sticker looks like so you can check it out!

Should I be worried with this LED in that sitting position/angle?

Sitting that close at that angle you are going to lose some picture quality no matter which panel you get, IMO. Will it be extreme? Probably not. Your best bet would be to angle the TV at you. It looks like your stand allows you to mount the TV to it. Does it swivel? If not, you may just want to angle the stand over towards your chair. I remember you saying you're looking at a good deal, but 55" may be bigger than you really need for that space. There are several sources online to help you determine the best size for your environment.

In case anyone is close to purchasing a new set, Samsung and Sony are about to implement a new pricing policy. Currently they use MAP (minimum advertised price), but effective April 1, on new models they will move to UPP (unilateral pricing policy) - think Apple or Bose. After April 1, dealers who sell below manufacturers set selling price will be penalized. They are doing this so dealers can't out-discount each other. This would be a great time to buy a 2011 model year closeout set, as there are said to be no earth shaking technological advances in the 2012 model lineups. Just found this out today and wanted to pass it along!

Thanks. Looks like I've got an H302 here and it sounds like it's not the worst, but not the best either. Seems to be the most common panel type of the 55 inch models. Decisions, decisions. Just not sure I want to go through the hassle of shipping the set back to Dell if I don't like the panel though I suppose if it's defective I could talk them into paying return shipping...Trying to decide if it's worth opening the box to see...

Shaytoon,
What he is referring to, is that if you access the "service menu" on the tv, it resets all of your settings to the default.

The "service menu"---think secret advanced options menu---can be accessed by entering a series of keystrokes on the remote. This allows users (including professional calibrators) to access advanced settings to really fine-tune the settings. There are posts throughout the forums if you're interested in finding out more. If I recall, your problem was that all of your custom settings were wiped out and restored to default. He was suggesting you went into the service menu to check it out, not realizing it would reset your settings.

My guess is that someone in your household hit a "restore all settings to the default setting" option in one of the menus...

Good luck.

Brought home a new UN60D6000 last night and am very pleased. I have the cable box (HD) hooked up with an HDMI cable. Excellent quality on the HD channels, but very poor on the SD. Is there a way to optimize SD channel viewing, or is that the nature of the beast?

Compared to actual HD yes that is "the nature of the beast". Also just because it comes to you in 1080i or 720p does Not mean it is actually HD. It must have been recorded in HD and not degraded by anyone or anything along the way to your TV. As far as I know all cable/sat companies compress the signal to some extent and therefore degrade it, both HD & SD. The source of any signal, no matter cable/sat/OTA, from the beginning and all along its journey to your set will be the reason for most deviations. The same major cable/sat company can be very different from one area to the next. Example, my local NBC station broadcasts all local programs in SD and the network programs are HD(maybe) but still 2 ch stereo not DD 5.1 because the local does not have the proper equipment. This would drive a newbie crazy wondering what the he!!?

My advice is to pick the best of your favorite channels to base any adjustments on and for the rest it is WYSIWYG. Find the reception thread for your local area here on AVS and you will get others experience in your area which can save a lot of wasted time wondering if it is your equipment or not. This goes for any brand/model in the DTV world.

There was a new firmware update for my 60"6420 today (1028). It isn't on the website yet, but a check for updates via internet found it.
Hi guys I am a constant browser but finally pulled the trigger on a 55" 6420 from BestBuy because I got a smoking deal on it and the picture in the store was amazing. Needless to say there is an issue or I wouldn't be posting....
Picture looks great for movies, TV and video games BUT when I am watching sports I get a "shutter" effect bad enough that my wife said that she can't deal with it to watch sports on it. I just don't have time to read ALL 93 + pages in this forum so I am asking if anyone has a solution to this.... I have tried all the "normal" setting changes of turning on "Game Mode" and through all of the AMP setting with no luck.....
Any help would be great! PLEASE HELP ME!
Try AMP set to Clear, and LED Motion Plus ON.
D Bone.....
Thanks, I will try that.
Any other suggestions from the group? I'm noticing that redwolf4k settings get a lot of "love" but neither set call for the LED Motion Plus to be ON.....
His settings are good, but not gospel. If you have a disc like Spears & Munsil, you can calibrate your display fairly easily. I noticed a big improvement with LED MP ON, especially with racing, football and Hockey. It will dim the display a bit, but that is easily rectified by turning up the back light a bit.

My settings from Spears & Munsil/DVE are:

System > Eco Solution > Energy Saving: OFF
System > Eco Solution > Eco Sensor: OFF

Picture Mode:
STANDARD
Backlight: 15
Contrast: 75
Brightness: 47
Sharpness: 15
Color: 48
Tint: 50/50
Picture Size: Screen Fit

Advanced Settings:
Black Tone: OFF
Dynamic Contrast: MEDIUM
Shadow Detail: 0
Gamma: 0
Color Space: AUTO
White Balance: ALL @ 25
Flesh Tone: 0
Edge Enhancement: OFF
Motion Lighting: OFF
LED Motion Plus: ON

Picture Options:
Color Tone: WARM1
Digital Noise Filter: OFF
MPEG Noise Filter: OFF
HDMI Black Level: NORMAL
Film Mode: OFF
Auto Motion Plus: CLEAR

I'm going to suggest a setting I tried just out of curiosity. Set your cable box to output 720p and see if that corrects the stuttering. Also see if you can detect the difference between 720p and 1080i. I have the un46d6000 and I tried this... I stared and stared at that screen from my normal viewing distance and from about 2 feet away and I couldn't see a difference in picture quality.

It's an easy experiment to try.
The bigger the screen the more 1080 becomes important. For example I have an old color crt with a 9" screen and 480i is as good on that as any 1080p I have seen. Also, jepreston03, what is your source, OTA or cable or sat? Did you have the problem with all sports on all channels all the time or just one channel one time? I agree with dbones suggestions for that problem. I also use redwolfs settings with some minor tweaks (UND6000).
Anybody know what the latest firmware update actually did?

My source is DirecTv HDDVR (Newest Unit but NOT the HR34). It is apparent on all of the ESPN channels.........

I went with the suggestions and now the picture seems a touch to dark for me, I like the "Soap Opera" look (I think that is what you call it) and was wondering if there was a way to get that look within redwolf4k's setting (tweaks to get that look). I would get that look in "Natural" under picture settings but then loose the ability to turn on the LED Motion Plus and what not. Any ideas?

I always had a question about this. I have my comcast cable box set to 1080i only as I thought this would force everything to be the highest quality, and make the cable box do all of the processing work instead of the TV.

I'm not trying to confuse this with what the AMP settings do, but I'm curious to see if this helps with judder. I personally like the soap opera effect, but when AMP is set to anything but off or clear and I'm watching golf, the players' swings and the ball when it is in the air judder alot

I have my DirecTv box set to "Native"..... Does that matter? My thought was that it would improve the picture simply because it would not be forcing it to be in a resolution that it was not broadcast in......

Before you go potentially wasting a lot of time and frustration I would suggest the following:

Check out sports on OTHER then ESPN channels!!!

Check the experience of others in your area on your local reception thread here at AVS.

There was someone else in this thread with problems that turned out to be ESPN problem but I can't remember if he had cable or sat. I started with DTV in 2006 and nearly went crazy for a few months until it dawned on me that after initial adjustments 99% of deviations came from the reception source and Not any of my equipment. Also what is good one day can be crap the next especially when it comes to judder and motion problems. Check Other Channels/Sources Before you Make A Decision.

It could, remember any TV will in the end scale the picture to ITs native resolution, in this case 1080p.

I will do that. One thing to note is that I did NOT have this issue with my Sony KDS-60a3000.....

So does it make more sense to just turn on 720p? Or another of the resolution options?

That is easy to try AND easy to undo. Change you sat box or dvr to feed the TV 1080p first as I believe you have a 55" screen and that is in the area where 1080 matters more.. Again I would watch OTHER sports sources before going to far down some complicated road.

Is that a Plasma set which does not have motion problems like LCD/LED does? Another test option depending on your location is to temporarily hook up a $10 set of rabbit ears and check sports over local OTA this weekend. Have you watched Live ESPN vs recorded by DVR? You initialy said everthing else was looking great and only ESPN was terrible so experience still would lead me to suspect the source first.

The KDS is a LCoS (Liquid Crystal on Silicone). Both DVR and live ESPN.
