This was the sequence I had to use as well. I only I created a second PS3 device and set the repetition on the PS button to 20. I only use that PS button and that PS3 device for my shutdown commands. But I did have to do the down, down, down, cross, cross like you did. The two downs and two crosses did not work for me when I was inside a game or app.

Here's my first attempt with iRule, using my Nexus 7 tablet. The drawer on the left is the source selector, with the current device on top. The Batman logo is the gesture pad, usually doing basic navigation functions like up, down, left, right, enter and pause/ play.
Cover Page: (tap to go to Home Page)

Home Page:

Source devices-
DirecTV:

DirecTV channels:

Sony Blu Ray player:

WDTV Live Hub:

Xbox:

Boxee:

Mits Projector:

Denon receiver:

Darbee:

I'm doing IP control on the Denon, DirecTV, Sony Blu Ray, Boxeee and WDTV Live Hub.
WF2IR on the Mits, X Box and the Darbee.
The Nexus is a 7" screen so I went with a nice, clean, simple and uniform design.

I'm trying my hand at the iRule, and so far it's going great! Love this remote. However, I'm now trying to customize the images, and I'm stuck on my first attempt. I use Dish Network, so I simply dragged the Dish Network button on top of the DirecTV button. The control seems to have worked... mousing over it gives the correct commands. However, the Dish Network button is smaller than the DirecTV button, messing up the look of my main page. In the "Properties" on the bottom-left, it even says the images are the same size (7 width, 4 height). Is there a simple fix for this?

Also, while I"m at it, I was going to make a custom overlay on some of the "blank" buttons. Copying the image and pasting them into Photoshop doesn't work... is there a way to import/save the image and then upload it when done?

EDIT: Never mind... figured out the different sizes. After scrolling down I noticed separate, larger images for each background. Thus, I need to figure out how to export, modify and import the images. This way I can make the Dish Network button larger.

Jonathanengr, If you want to save an iRule image to your computer for editing, it can only be done while viewing a gallery. Click the "eye" icon on the right to view the gallery. When you find a graphic that you want to save to your computer, Ctrl+left click+drag the graphic to your desktop.
I have looked everywhere but don't see the "eye" icon. I'm in the "Images" section to the right of the screen (where you have the tabs for Images, Devices, Feedbacks, More), and I've tried the ctrl-left click and dragging it to my desktop with no effect. I must be in the wrong area.
Jonathanengr, the eye mborner is referring to is in the 'Browse image libraries' dialog, not in your Images tab.

From the Images tab, select Actions > Browse image libraries. Search/locate your desired image library. In the resulting list, you'll see the 'View' column with eye icons in it. Click one and it will spawn a new view with a preview of all the images in that library. It is from this view that you can control-drag a button image to your desktop.

Cheers,

Where did you get the buttons at for the Denon? I am getting a new Denon receiver this week and I like those but I can't find them

This thread needs more pics! biggrin.gif

Another theme, here's just a couple panels:

Home Screen:

DirecTV:

DirecTV Favorite Channels

Denon receiver:

I find that the black buttons are easier to read compared to the chrome ones. The Nexus 7 tablet tends to blow out the contrast a bit too so black looks nice & crisp.

Many very nice designs here, eg. one of the nice panels from mborner from post #6:

As a newbie I would like to know more about how to do his. i hope someone can answer a few questions:

Is the menu bar at the left created as a picture with all the buttons in it, or is the buttons dragged onto the background one and one?

Is the inset and the rest of the background two separate pictures, or is it made as one picture in eg Photoshop?

Is the buttons that is present on all panels placed in a drawer?

Thank, Gunnar! I have to laugh just a bit because that is a really dated image of my home page. I'm constantly tweaking and adjusting my UI. This is how it looks today:

The menu bar on the left are buttons (in my case they are links, as they contain no commands whatsoever) that simply take me to the control page of each device listed.

The inset and background are indeed, 2 separate images (old image) The new image is one solid background created in Photoshop. The Photoshop image looks like this:

In my case, I have not used any drawers in my UI, all of the buttons/links are placed on the page.

I also like your design....

I'm just getting started with iRule.

Are your panels shared? If so, how could I search for them?

Yes, my panels are shared. In the Users tab, search for "meowcat's"

Just getting started here.
Question: Can you use any brand of gateway that will pass info via ir/rf/232 or does iRule require you use the Global Cache brand?

thanks in advance.

For RS-232 usually any gateway will work, as long as it has a mode that passes the raw codes from its network port to its serial port without modifying them.

IR is different because iRule sends database IR codes specifically in Global Cache format. If you want to take advantage of the huge number of IR devices already in the iRule database, you need a Global Cache gateway (or one compatible with it). If a gateway accepts IR commands in a different format you could still use it, but you would have to enter all the IR codes yourself in that format (and then use it as a generic Network gateway in iRule).

Did you have a particular gateway in mind?

No. I simply was impatient and wanted to see if I could find something local. No one local, that I can find open this weekend, sells GC.

So I'll order and go from there. Thnx.

So this is Ipad version:

And all are basicly the same, I dont need anymore buttons to control more, everything is in sequences and entrances that works fine.

This is the Iphone remote:

Every background is premade, and just empty buttons on top of it. and when phone is rotated to landscape lights are controlled as last picture. every steering control is by gestures (apple tv, ps3, tv).

I finally got completely sick of all the small round buttons, and wanted to go to a significantly different look without messing with a fairly ergonomic layout that already existing in the default irule device templates. This was mostly brought on by getting an ipad mini, and not liking how small all of those round buttons got.

Looking for a change of pace, I wanted at least some square'ish buttons, with a bit flatter appearance. I started off making some buttons in Adobe Illustrator that could be droppen in over existing buttons, but were designed to take up nearly all the available space in the grid the standard buttons occupied. I then started making some of the larger play, puse, vol buttons with symbols on them. I then worded on trying to get a larger directional pad that would work with the standard ipad device template grid size.

A couple of pics of where I am with this "draft" version are below, but first some qualifications:

I'm a newbie at Illustrator, and my buttons are quick, dirty, and amateurish. If you look closely at the round buttons, you'll see the round edges are clipped by how Illustrator exported the files. I'm using CS4 and have not found a way to correct this, but will before I make the final buttons up. For now, these buttons will do, as they are more a size/fit experiment than anything else. I'll later make a much nicer set of buttons with more refined colors, better edging, etc., but keep in mind, I will still be going for something relatively flat, and not 3D'ish.

My cursor pad has the same button issues, but if you look closely, the size of the pieces are not a perfect fit the for grid arrangement, and it is not perfectly symmetrical in placement of the 4 buttons. I'll work on this later, but for now, it's close enough until I get time to do the math and get this just right. Quick 'n dirty for now, once again.

I will be doing some new source buttons, but would like to find access to the stock irule source button graphics for all sources, so I could make a complete set. Anyone know where to find those, so I can use the source images on new buttons? I tried the iRule site but it only had a couple of buttons. I would share anything I've created. He'll I've shared all my buttons, and a couple of example panels already, even though I doubt anyone would want to use any of this in it's current crude state.

My backgrounds are simple, and not much time was spent on those either, but I'll make some more variety later as I have time.

Here's a couple of screen shots of this first rough draft. It uses the stock arrangement with left/right drawers pinned, and the second shot shows the "AVR control drawer" for that room pulled all the way up.

Here with the AVR Drawer pulled up into view:

The purpose was to make bigger appearing buttons, and make it more fitting for smaller tablets, which I'm starting to favor for remote control use. If some of you feel this design direction has merit, I'll move it along (need to fix that direction pad!), and keep sharing all of the files.

Amateurish or not, your UI looks fantastic, great job!

Thanks for the compliment! I like it enough, that it is the main style for all my devices/rooms now, and will work towards refining it. For me, it looks a bit loud in screen shots, but pretty attractive on the actual device, and the larger buttons appeal to me and my sausage fingers. haha

I really would like to make some completely new source buttons, but cannot find the artwork live files for the iRule source buttons. Anyone know where to find these image files for all the various logos, etc. that are on the face of the source buttons?

Find the logos by google, find a blank Button u like, find logos in PNG format, resize Them at imagesplitter, and Edit in paint even. 😀

Got some help for the good folks at iRule, and am getting access for the source button images.

This will save tons of time, and I can at least offer a full set of completed source buttons for the style of iRule interface I'm going for. It would suck having to gather all the images up from the internet. Well, I only need a few and could get what I need together (or make from scratch) pretty easily, but it would be convenient to just offer a full set of source buttons in the template for other to use if they end up liking the look.

So, I made some source buttons to try a new idea out. I want the simplicity of using a left-tray for the source buttons, and having one set of trays per room, but I do like how my previous ipad setup had an indicator on the active source button of each page. Of course, to do that I needed to have the source buttons reside on each page, and it was a major hassle managing that, especially for 4+ rooms.

What I did here is use a tray for the sources, but I made a transparent hole in the upper-right corner of each source button. I then place colored "on/off block" images behind the source buttons in the background of the page (on top of the background image), and those represent the active or inactive light statues for each source button. That way, but buttons just reside on the left-drawer of a single drawer for all panels for the room, but each panel has the actual on/off illuminations objects showing up through the transparent hole in the buttons. It really easy to manage a large multi-room setup of panels, and still get the small nicety of source button status indicators. Perhaps they way I've written this up it sounds like a pain in the butt just to get status button indicators, but I thin it is pretty easy to deal with, and FAR easier than having source buttons residing in individual pages, and trying to manage that.

Of course, when iRule comes out with image swapping for iRule (they are working on it), that will likely be a better way to do something like this, but that also depends on how they implement something like this. Until then, I think this works well enough.

Here's a picture. Please keep in mind this is once again a rough draft, made for an iPad mini, and I'll flesh out better looking buttons once I get the sizing/placement finalized.
