Torq on bolts with sub.

Hey,

I was just wondering how much torq you should apply when installing a driver for a sub.

I'm using baltic birch with tnuts and hex bolts. Like this:



I want to tighten them, but not strip them and have the fear of the t-nut coming loose. I installed them with liquid nails to increase their grab, but I'm worried I could tighten them too much and cause them to spin. I have a torq wrench with hex bolt attachment.

You will be able to "feel" when they are tight enough. It does not take a bunch of torque, just enough to compress the gasket some. To make it easier, try and use a nut driver as opposed to a wrench which could over-torque the nuts/screws.

Another thing you can do if you have left over wood is test it. See how pressure it takes till your happy or till it gives.

I used my drill set to 5, just 1 under the max. I then tightened a bit more by hand. I thought with a torq wrench I could measure the pressure precisely for each bolt.. The gasket has compressed a fair amount, so it may be sufficiently tightened, but I thought there may be a standard gauge for it.

Don't rely on a torque wrench. You need to do this by feel. Those t-nuts are cheaply made and often bind up.

You are probably good. If you see the metal "frame" of the driver start to deform you have gone too far.

This is a big driver, so I don't think I'll see it deform, but I'll keep an eye on it.

Put all the bolts in first, use the star patten, no need to over tighten Go around in the star patten tightening alittle each time, it should take 3 or 4 times.

If you see or hear something, its than to late..

Well it's tightened and tested the sub tonight. All is well, thanks.

Will post build pictures in a new thread later. Test through the weekend and then stain.
