Thanks for the heads up that a new FW was available. I updated via NET for the second time without difficulty. The first time when I purchased it a few weeks ago took ~30 minutes, this time only 3 minutes.

It does state it is supposed to improve update functionality. Maybe it will give us notice via the receiver that updates are available? That would be a handy feature.

interested in hearing your from NZ and running an imported presumably 110v 60hz receiver. Was it as simple as hooking it up to a stepdown 110v transformer ?. Do you have any issues with overheating because of the 60hz/50hz power supply ?.

got mine yesterday and finally got around to setting it up today.. so far so good.. sounds great and has a ton of inputs.. so far very happy.. only problem is net input - my tv does not seem to like it via hdmi...

Man i wish i was looking in this forum a few days ago. That deal from Vann's is sick.
I need to buy two units and that would have saved me a wack of change...

I'm going to give them a call tomorrow to see what kind of deal they can swing me if I buy 2! Maybe they will raincheck? hahaha...probably not but doesnt hurt to try.

Does the tx-nr609 (or tx-nrx09) allow the display of the volume and menus over a hdmi connected 3D source such as a 3D bluray movie. I noticed that Denon this year is advertising this ability for their 3312ci and 2312ci models and was curious if any Onkyo's supported this as well.

hey guy im having a slight lip sync isue with my 609. I have my new BD-D7500 samy player hooked up to the 609 via low end monster hdmi and then a blur rigger hdmi from amazon passing it on to the UN55D8000. I was able to solve the problem by just running the blu ray player via blue rigger cable to the tv so its either the hdmi or actuall receiver. Any suggestions? What brand do you all use for your hdmi?

I use 3ft monoprice 24ga high speed cables with my 509 and have no lip synch issues at all. You can go thru the set up menu and adjust lip synch

I need help deciding between the following new Onkyo AV Receivers: TX-NR709, TX-NR609, and HT-RC370.

From what I can see the price differs $799, $699, and $499 respectively.

The features are very similar and I'm having trouble deciding whether an extra $300 is worth paying. I have no problem doing it, but not if I'm paying for hyped up features I don't need.

To start, how do I know if I need the extra 10 watts of power/channel from the 709? My 5.1 system will consist of the following:

• Paradigm Millenia 20 Trio as the center, left, and right
• Paradigm AMS 150SQ SM as the rears
• Paradigm PCS 80SQ w/ Paradigm X-300 Amp as the in ceiling sub

Is there a way I can read the specs of the above system and know how many watts of power I'll need?

Secondly, I've heard that the 609 cannot connect other amps for more power. Does this mean the 609 is a "no go" if I get the PCS 80SQ w the X-300 amp. I don't think you can have that in wall sub without the amp. Does this mean I have to go with either the 709 or RC370?

Next, I notice the 609 only has the Audyssey 2EQ, whereas the 709 and RC370 have the Audyssey MultiEQ XT. What makes the MultiEQ XT so much better? I confess, I really don't know too much about Audyssey as this will be my first sound system. For the system I mentioned above would the MultiEQ XT make a noticeable difference over the 2EQ? My living room, where the system will be, is somewhat oddly shaped (modern floor plan with the kitchen somewhat open to the viewing room where the sound would be)..maybe this makes a difference. Because of the openness of the floor plan, the room is a decent size (approx 430 sq ft). Also, it doesn't look like the 2EQ does anything for the sub, whereas the MultiEQ XT does. Any guidance on Audyssey 2EQ vs. MultiEQ XT would be very helpful.

I also notice on the Onkyo website, all of the above receivers are listed as having only one HDMI output. Is this a mistake? From pics of the back it looks like the 709 and RC370 have 2 HDMI outputs? I don't really think this is a big deal for me, as I have no use for a second output now, but it would be nice to know for future expansion. Also, if the second outputs exist, are these independent or simultaneous?

It looks like all three of the receivers support control via IP. I need this for my self built home automation system. Also, it needs to be 2 way (bi-directional); I assume it is. I don't see any need to have RS 232 or IR input (the 709 has these as well).

Finally, I may want to add a second zone down the road. It seems all three receivers support a zone 2. Any better than others on this? Any way for any of them to ever do a zone 3 or zone 4?

Sorry for the long post. Thanks in advance for any advice on the above or anything you think a newbie should consider.

the Onkyo tx-nr609 does have OSD.

Connected via HDMI (Mediabridge High Speed 3D/Ethernet) the DVR, Blu-ray Player and PS3 to the 609, from the 609 (HDMI out) to my Mitsubishi 3D Adapter (3DC-1000) (HDMI in) then from the Adapter (HDMI out) to the TV.
I DO NOT control the DVR, Blu-ray or PS3 with the 609.
I do have OSD with all of them.

It is not clear to me if you mean it has OSD over 3D source material or not, It should certainly have OSD over 2D source material. Have you tried it with a 3D Bluray movie for example?

I did watch the Movie Piranha in 3D this afternoon and had no trouble with OSD

Where can one get UWF-1 Wireless USB Adapter. My ethernet DSL jack in a room 20 metrers from the receiver/TV. I cannot run permanently a ethernet cable across. What are my choices? I cannot seem to find UWF in amazon. Is there a way I can convert wifi back to ethernet near receiver?

FYI: I have no idea what they charge for this wireless adaptor, but there is also a device sold by Netgear that is used to connect an Ethernet only device to wireless networks. This costs about $40. I have no idea what the Onkyo device will cost, but I suspect it won't be that cheap.

One more question, I am a newbie in this area. If I get a TX NR 609, and hook to speakers from Onkyo HT s5400, will they be all compatible.

The speakers that came with your HTiB will be fine with the 609.
Yes they are "compatible."

you should be fine.. I think you just need to worry at extreme volumes - the 609 may have trouble driving the speakers and you may get clipping at very high volume levels, but the speakers are rated high enough to take the resistance and watts

Sorry it took a few days to reply. I'm in Houston, not NZ although I spent a week in Auckland in 1957 thanks to the U.S. Navy. Wonderful time was had by all.

I was listening to the NZ radio station via the vTuner app that is on the 609. I've since listened to several others from around the world just for grins. I probably have more music time on the 609 than TV time at this point.

I received my 609 yesterday, but it is not yet set up - I am chomping at the bit, but my 20 year old returned last night from a semester in Tanzania, and I need to (try) to keep my priorities straight. I plan to use my Apple AirPort Express Base Station with 802.11n which runs $100, and I expect will concurrently (1) provide a wireless bridge to the AirPort Ethernet port to then connect via cable to the 609 and (2) a digital port for a Toslink cable to wirelessly connect a digital signal straight from iTunes on our iMac to the receiver. If others here have ideas on connecting the 609 to media on a Mac, I am open to suggestions. What I have read thus far about the 609 refers to Windows Media Player rather than iTunes or a Mac as a media server.

If you want to use the AP Express, you can use iTunes and the Airplay capability of the AP Express along with Apple's Remote app from the app store.

If you want a DLNA server, there are several of those to choose from, then you can browse from the 609 just like there was a Windows device on your network: Twonkymedia, Medialink, and possibly a few others that are free but don't pop into my head right now.

Received the NR609 yesterday and had it working out of the box in about 30 minutes. Everything seems to be in order (more details below) but am having a problem getting the "Play To" feature to work with Windows Media Player and Windows 7. The player recognizes the receiver but when I try to play something I keep getting "can not control device error". I can play audio files from the same PC using DLNA so connection is not the issue. Any help would be appreciated.

Initial review:
Everything appeared to work out of the box
Network set-up automatically (DHCP)
Speaker set up was a breeze and initial settings using mike appear pretty good
HDMI pass-through works without a hitch
Remote is very confusing - will be using a Harmony anyways
Network features work but need better interface
Pandora interface is lame compared to the LG BD590
Same with Napster (hopefully they will continue development of these features)
vTuner feature is excellent - my first exposure to this app
DLNA worked no problem - found my two NAS boxes and PC's and played audio from them all
Have not tried zone 2 yet or many other features - more to come

Mine is arriving tonight. $484 from Amazon. I wish I had seen the posting about Vanns a few days ago! I called them yesterday but they could not revive the offer.

I confess that i'm a little nervous about configuring/wiring my first AV receiver with a 5.1 speaker set. Cant wait to give it a try though.

Do you think I need the ethernet cable installed at the get go and to do a system update or would it be alright to plug in some devices and the speakers and start listening as figure out how to run the ethernet and fine tuen controls etc?

Mine comes tonight!!! I got on the Vann's deal courtesy of slickdeals as well. This takes my A/V cherry as my first receiver! Hopefully more people get it so we can get more people to troubleshoot and share the love

I finally took the plunge and ordered TX NR 609 yesterday from amazon. Arriving today afternoon. Love the prime + $4 upgrade. will post detailed feedback from a newbie's perspective in couple of days

Is there a program like this that would allow me to play iTunes (most files are mp4) on a PC through the 609?

I believe the Apple TV would help you there - I'm disappointed not to have Air Play on the 609 but intend to plug my Apple Tv Vers 1 to bring music and vids to the 609.....

You can always use a DNLA server and just point it to the root of your iTunes music library. iTunes already organizes by artist, album etc. And the media server won't modify your files.

You can also add other directories for videos and such, but the 609 won't deal with those.

You will be far happier with the AppleTV2, I have one and AirPlay on a Denon 991 - and I find the AirPlay on the Denon slightly better than nothing. The ATV2 on the Onkyo (or anything else) is far better.
