Thanks for the advice. I do have another Monoprice 10' cord laying around, so I'll try swapping that one out to see if it makes any difference. I will also make sure Deep Color is off on the BDT210.

No. Audio Return Channel -enabled devices can be connected via all the existing categories of HDMI cables." However on other pages of the hdmi.org site, I see where it says ARC was only introduced in HDMI 1.4, which is contradicting. If you google "audio return channel" you will find other sources saying it only works on HDMI 1.4 (aka High Speed). Considering people haven't gotten ARC to work with cables less than 1.4, I would assume hdmi.org is incorrect, which would be crazy considering it's the official site for HDMI...

At first, I also thought like you, but after reading hdmi.org pages carefully, I understood what they say and nothing is contradicting.
(I don't know for sure if they are correct, but) here is what they try to tell us:

- HDMI Cables should not have version
- Let's say I had a 1.3 HDMI TV, a 1.3 HDMI receiver and a "1.3" HDMI cable. ARC did NOT work.
However, after I replaced my TV with a 1.4 HDMI TV, my receiver with a HDMI 1.4 AVR, still have the same "1.3" cable. Now ARC feature works.

So ARC is introduced in HDMI 1.4, but all HDMI cables should work. No contradiction!

^^

Exactly. The HDMI spec applies to the "device" and NOT the cable.

This will be no big surprise....
The whole reason i changed cables was Vizio support told me i needed a 1.4 cable for ARC to work. I put on a "1.4" cable and it did work. I figured that was it.

Only later after reading this forum for a bit did i read info such as the above. Go figure....

In order to troubleshoot HDMI video/audio issues, start out by ensuring the cable connections are securely fitted between the source and AVR and between the AVR and the TV/display. A loose fitting can cause picture issues. The next step is to connect the HDMI cable from the source directly to the TV/display to see if you still get the same issue to rule out the source as the issue. If no issue, this connection doesn't rule out the cable itself from being defective, so try replacing the HDMI cables which can be purchased from forum sponsors Monoprice or Blue Jeans Cable for relatively inexpensive prices (~$5/cable). The last step would be to reset the micropressor which will return all settings to their factory defaults.

Is the issue happening with all sources or just a particular source?

i have ruled out its not the hdmi cables at all. When the receiver is off and the hdmi is pass through the receiver to the tv it doesnt happen anymore. However id only get tv speakers. if i turn on the receiver with no specific time frame, i can see visible white pixels and picture flickering. it looks like the "infamous ONKYO HANDSHAKE issue" hdmi picture flicker and white snow pixels, then sound is lost. is it possible i need a High end Surge Protector, high end 25ft HDMI Cable?.. im running ONKYO HT RC 360, Samsung 6000 LED TV, Precision Acoustic speakers.
Lastly how do i reset the onkyo ht rc 360 thank you everyone

How about my PS3? Does it even make a difference in picture or audio if it goes directly to the TV or if it has to travel through the reciever first..

Thanks

Depends on what TV you have and what upconversion (etc) functions it has. I would use the 609.

Hi Heaty, try a different brand HDMI cable.

To reset the receiver:
- turn receiver on
- while holding down the [VCR/DVR] button
- press the [ON/STANDBY] button
- Clear will appear on the display and the receiver will enter Standby mode

I just got my Energy Take 5 pack in and hooked it up. I've got a camera tripod and all that to calibrate things with Audyssey. Do I need to do anything else? I knew I should set my 230W 10" Onkyo subwoofer at 120Hz or so in the receiver. It only has one volume type knob on the back of it, but then I saw settings like that for my other 5 speakers (running 5.1). I set them all to 120Hz but I don't know if that was a good thing to do. The satellites are 115-20k and the center is 110-20k, the sub is 30-150. Sorry I'm such a big dummy. Do those settings replace the Big/Small settings you see sometimes? I am replacing an HT-R520 (66 buttons on the (#$)*% remote) and the onscreen setup is actually worth using. Is there anything I need to do after running Audyssey besides set my sub level?

The speaker settings you set prior to running Audyssey are ignored. After running Audyssey, ensure the sub is not maxed out at -12db (otherwise lower sub volume knob a little and rerun Audyssey again) and leave any speaker crossovers set > 80hz at what ever level the Onkyo sets them to. Follow the Audyssey Setup Guide linked in my sig for more information.

Thank you sir. So I take it I didn't mess anything up.. It already has my 4 & 5 year old's approval. They are watching Avatar now. I don't know if they understand that much of it, but they say it's like a movie theater in the house. My wife likes it. She loves how her bad karaoke with an asian accent sounds so clear and loud

I plan on running my PS3 and Cable box directly to the TV and running one HDMI cable from the TV to the Receiver. Will this eliminate the problems people are reporting in 24p with frame skipping?

in theory , yes
problem only occurs when ONKYO is passing video in your setup it wont
mine works fine bypassing the amp for video and sendong audio via optic. not ideal though as i dont get the hd audio or hdmi switching i paid for

This is only possible with optical cable.

Glad I asked. I was told I can run one HDMI cable from HDMI 1 on the TV to the ARC Input on the Receiver and that whatever is playing on my TV will be heard through the speakers.

If I am wrong it's no big deal, but I may not want to buy the 509 now if these issues are constantly being reported. Not sure what to do...

Although this may solve the video problem, you're losing out on not only HD audio but also lossy DD/DTS 5.1 audio as well. The TV can only pass stereo PCM 2.0 back to the AVR using the ARC feature, so as noted, if you go this route, in addition to connecting an HDMI cable from the PS3 and cable box to the TV, you'll also want to connect an optical cable from each one to the AVR as well. You still won't get HD audio from Blu Ray DVDs, but at least you'll get the DD/DTS 5.1 audio.

That makes sense. In hooking the PS3 and Cable up through the Receiver, would I still be able to listen to the TV through the TV speakers (my wife won't understand how to use the receiver)?

Yes, as long as the PS3 and cable box are correctly set to output audio over both the HDMI and optical cables at the same time.

I don't believe digital audio (except for NET) works with Zone 2. I'm not sure if the original Apple TV has an analog audio output (ATV2 doesn't), but if it does, that's what you'd need to use instead of HDMI.

With the original ATV use the analog connection in addition to the HDMI, otherwise, with an ATV2, you must use an optical --> analog converter.

Ok, I ran Audyssey and it set 4 of my speakers around 90hz, but one at 70hz which is kinda low for the Take 5. For the life of me I can't figger out where to bump it back up to 80-90. I looked at the manual and went through the menus like 4 times. Where do you adjust your individual speaker volumes at on an RC360?

Hi Joe, Menu -> Speaker Setup -> Speaker Configuration

Menu -> Speaker Setup -> Level Calibration
