Just thought I'd chime in here with my hacking away at the TX-NR609 and its network protocol.

I've finally cracked the problem of accessing the receiver's settings pages over the network and am adding these features as quickly as I can for my next update.

Here's a couple of screenshots. I have coverage of about 80% or more of the Setup pages, and the app dumps the status of these pages and allows changing any editable values (within reason).

It turns out these commands are "supported" as far back as 2009 to the TX-NRX07 days. I only found out about them recently when I found Onkyo's app sending a strange undocumented message a few days ago. That lead to this (yes, all buttons work)

I'll be adding this in a future update to the app.

Hello Guys..I am planning to get the 509 model. It is 229$ in amazon. Do you guys recommend it ? Or are they any better receivers for that money(anything less than 300). Thanks

Q - would this work on a 709, if so where may i find it please?

Yes... I have also tried using different HDMI leads.

That said, I guess I could try a different TV... I'll do this and report back

It seems to work on all models over at least the last three years. It's not out yet, but in a soon-to-be-released update.

I just got the Onkyo TX-NR609 and I'm having some issues. Let me start off by saying I'm not an audiophile by any means. For some strange reason my AVR will not stay on 5.1 Dolby Digital. When I'm watching cable it'll switch over to TV Logic or All Ch Stereo; the same thing happens when I'm on my Xbox.

I have a cable box, PS3, and Xbox all hooked up via HDMI and one HDMI going to the TV. I've tried switching the HDMI cables out but it doesn't seem to matter. I don't know what to do really and I'm getting rather angry.

Any help would be appreciated. I don't know if this problem has been answered or not but if it did, I'm sorry for a repost.

Just thought I'd mention that some kind soul on another forum posted the .apk for me. It works great on my rooted Nook Color.

Screw Google, they're getting as bad as Apple.

Anyway, if anyone wants the .apk, shoot me a PM.

It just doing what it's suppose to do. Not everything is encoded with DD 5.1 (like commercials) so it adjusts to the input format each time.

I set my 607 to Studio Mix (for DVR via HDMI) because the wife didn't like the switching. If we are going to sit down and watch a movie, I just press the Movie (Listening Mode) button and switch to DD5.1.

I'm not sure that's the case with me. For example, two nights ago I was playing Modern Warfare 3 on my Xbox and I was listening to it in DD 5.1. Last night, for some reason it would not switch over to DD 5.1 no matter what I did. I know for a fact that Modern Warfare 3 allows for DD 5.1. I wonder if it's the unit that's causing the problem? Is there a work around?

What is the 609 showing as the audio input? Is it telling you it is getting DD5.1 or some kind of 2.0? Perhaps your Xbox is only sending a stereo signal for some reason.

Well that's the funny thing, it keeps switching. Like last night it kept switching between 2.0 and 5.1. The output kept switching too. I only have 5 speakers but it would keep changing between 5.1 and 7.1. I've not only noticed this on my xbox but on my cable box as well. I know both are capable of 5.1 and nothing has changed at all.

There is a way to turn off the auto decode mode.
just enable that and it should just switch between DD and pro-logic2 or something compatible

Hi OhYeahitsJosh, its possible a receiver issue.

Here is a few suggestions to try:

1. update to the latest firmware

2. set input source Listening Mode Preset to "Straight Decode"

3. under Hardware Setup menu if HDMI Control is "on", turn it "off"

4. try a different HDMI cable (from receiver to tv)

5. unplug receiver power cord from wall outlet, wait a minute, reconnect power cord and then perform a factory reset using the buttons on the receiver:
- turn receiver on
- while holding down the [VCR/DVR] button
- press the [ON/STANDBY] button
- Clear will appear on the display and the receiver will enter Standby mode

Hey JChin, I really hope it isn't.

1. I did update to the latest firmware last night and still have the same issue afterwards.

2-3. I will try doing this later tonight and post the results.

4. I've swapped the HDMI back and forth between different boxes and nothing has changed.

5. I have tried this before as well and I think it worked for a few minutes and then changed back.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll try the second and third one and see where what happens. I guess other than that, my only other option is to send the receiver back and get a new one?
Okay so I tried all the things that JChin suggested and nothing worked. I had the Cable in DD 5.1 for about a minute and then it switched back without any input from me. This is after I reset the unit and switched out a bunch of HDMI cables.

Any idea what I should do now?

I bought an Onkyo Onkyo TX-NR609 back in December when our old JVC AV receiver suddenly died. Bought from Crutchfield for $399 and free shipping. Have updated the firmware twice without incident via SB drive. I am streaming to it with a TP-Link TL-WN722N. I have had it hang up a couple of times at initiating but found I could unplug and it was fine. I'm pretty happy with the sound and features. My question is how to stream my iTunes music from my Mac. Anyone able to recommend DLNA server software? I can do this with our AppleTV2 but then it won't go to zone 2.

i just got the Onkyo 609 and ... i am disappointed

I can't send video signal from Technisat freesat receiver through the Onkyo recveiver to the Toshiba TV ( i am using HDMI cables only). I have also tried to use Humax receiver and no picture I have tried to change HDMI OUT settings, i did firmware update and factory reset, and still nothing. Another problem is 'on screen menu'. It isn't displayed. All what i can see is initial Onkyo messagefor about 3 sec and than it disappears ... the scrren changes colour to blue, no signal.
Any ideas??? solutions???

There is an optical to analog converter available- someone here probably knows where to get it. But the cost of that compared to an Airport Express should not be that much different.

The AP Express is an excellent audio only AirPlay device and it's analog too.

Edit: the cost is different, the converters run about $20-$50, the AP Express $100.

So the problem of my 609's HDMI output stuck on 4:3 display has returned -- seems like it's happening every other day -- and the only way to put the display back into 16:9 is to unplug the receiver and plug it back in.

This problem is only from the cable/sat output, which is upconverted from a composite input (SD DirecTivo), and when it does occur it happens after the unit was turned off then on. My only other input right now is a PS3 through the Game HDMI port, and it has no issues.

I have updated the receiver to the latest firmware; the only thing I have not done yet is to swap the output HDMI cable -- but somehow I doubt it's the cable, because as I mentioned above the PS3 section is working fine, and they all share the same output cable.

I am a little frustrated that the only fix seems to be power-cycling, which is usually reserved as the last resort... Any thoughts?

I'm a new NR609 owner and have been having inconsistent, but major, HDMI (handshaking?) issues. My setup is a PC and PS3 connected to the receiver via HDMI, with the receiver outputting to a 46" Samsung LCD TV via HDMI.

Since the first night I setup the Onkyo, I have been getting major "flickering" or loss of video signal problems. It has occurred from both input devices, and it does not affect any sound output. I took some video to show the different issues that I have seen. The problem seems to have evolved over time, with the third video being the most recent.

Edit: It looks like I cannot post url's since I do not have enough posts on the forum. You can view the videos on my YouTube channel. Search for 'ddesantis8'.

It also seems to come and go. I've only had the unit for about a month, but it's gone many days without an issue, then all of a sudden it comes back for a day or two, then it's gone again. I have tried many things to fix it:

-Tried all 3 HDMI inputs on my TV. Before setting up the Onkyo I had the PC and PS3 connected to 2 of the TV's ports zero issues. Switching ports has seemed to temporarily cure the problem.
-Different HDMI cables. I purchased new 1.4 cables when I got the receiver, but I've also tried connecting with the older 1.3 cables I had. No cable configure has made a difference.
-Factory reset of the Onkyo
-Unplugging power from the Onkyo, re-plugging after a few minutes
-Adjusting the source settings between "Through", "Direct", "Custom", and "Game". At first changing it to Direct seemed to cure the issue, but then it came back after a few days.
-RIHD is turned off
-Tried different HDMI inputs on the back of the Onkyo
-I have the latest firmware, updated the night I set it up

Any ideas on what else I could do? It seems like it might simply be a defective unit and I should initiate a replacement with the retailer or Onkyo, but I thought I'd check here first before going that route.

Thanks!

I had the same issue with a unit I used and have also seen it reported by others. I think it's simply a feature of the video chip. I would get flickering at the bottom of the image, all over the image, etc. Turning the unit off/on would cure it each time. Although it was a rate occurrence. I'd say a half dozen or less times in a few weeks. The identical equipment has been used with numerous other receivers without issue.

Update: looking at your video mine was a completely different issue. Mine just showed static on the screen. It never lost signal where yours is plainly losing sync and reporting the resolution isn't supported. Couldn't hurt to swap units...

While something might not be right with the amp ... sounds like it's time for a newer Tivo box... Composite is the best it has?

What is your listening preset set to for the AVR?
I've had a 509 set up for a couple of weeks. Overall, I'm really happy with the receiver. I'm still experimenting and learning about all of the setup options (when I'm not watching or listening to content).

One thing I've noticed is that the 509 seems to sync better with input sources when the sources are turned on PRIOR to the 509. The most common issue I've seen related to this: The receiver "defaults" to 1080p over hdmi even though the blu-ray source is sending 720p over hdmi. (I use 720p sometimes because my projector is 720p.)

Has anybody else noticed the same?

Yes... It does have an s-video output, but the 609 cannot take advantage of it. My main concern is that if there's something wrong with the receiver, I need to act fast to exchange this unit. I just need to be sure before going through the hassle of packing up the whole thing and bring it back to the store.
