Onkyo TX-NR609, TX-NR509, TX-SR309 Thread - Page 88

Lately been trying to figure out my 609 receiver that we purchased in July right before vacation. Came back to a nighmare at work, so i'm finally setting down to get it dialed in.

I have never been real impressed with this receiver, the sound has always seemed flat, I hadnt taken the time to "dial" it in. I'm no audiophile at all, so I knew it would take some effort with all the controls and options.

Got out the owners manual, logged into internet, and got down to work. I noticed the center channel wouldnt have sound in most formats other than "all channels" program. Started playing with the sound settings and still nothing.

Finally decided to call Onkyo support today, they had me try a factory reset which resulted in no chage. They recommended I take it to a service center, relatively close for me, for repair.

So, now I get to pack it up and take it in, hope it doesnt take very long, i'm now bound and determined to get this theater dialed in.

So, for all of you that are happy with their receiver, in another couple weeks I'll be joing you!!!

Best,
SteveG

In regards to the Center not working ...

What are you sending it? Are you using HDMI or Optical from a stand-alone DVD or Blu-Ray player ... playing real (newer) disks that are encoded with DolbyDigital/DTS 5.1 or better?

Does the calibration routine pass?

The other four speakers and sub work fine. I've tried adjusting the speaker level calibration, speaker frequency, equalizing, etc and nothing has helped.

System specs:
TV: Panasonic tc-p65vt30
HTIB: Onkyo HT-S7409 (TX-NR609 receiver, HTP-790 5.1 speaker/sub)
PS3 connected via HDMI to receiver, receiver HMDI out to TV

Speakers also have slight pop when muting system with GT5. no problems muting other games, blu-rays. Any solutions, please apprise the thread. Thanks

any ideas how to tell the receiver to use 5.1 for direct? is it something in the oppo dvd player?

thanks.

I take it back, the SUB is on.
I think it was the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road DVD Audio not sending .1

thanks everyone.

Tesla,

Thanks for reading my post: the center channel works when you do the test tones fine, when I run Blueray through the PS3 player I no longer have the center channel. I can hear static through the speaker when I get right next to it but no music or movies.

I've tried running my kids games and movies and no go.

We'll see what the service center says,

Steve

Hi ilike_bikes, check PS3 audio output format list DD 5.1. DTS 5.1, TrueHD, DTSHD, etc... are enabled under "Audio Output Settings" (Settings -> Sound Settings -> Audio Output Settings -> HDMI -> Automatic -> Save).

Going over the menu settings I found that in Menu 2-4 level calibration, if you adjust the left speaker towards the negative setting, you can go past the normal limit of -12dB (the right speaker limits here) and it goes past it to -13, -14, -15db then wraps around to +65520dB!

It really does not put out this volume (obviously), but the internal registers of the AVR set the level from -12dB and jumps to +33dB when this happens.

Are your listening presets set up correctly?

Listening presets are settings that will force each input to playback with a specific audio setting, PLII, Straight Decode, etc... I recommend straight decode for the audio settings that will accept it. You can set them in the menu, but I am not in front of my AVR at the moment, and do not know the exact path to get there.

gotcha. I will do that.
But my issue was no sub in direct mode.
in multichannel it's there. could have been a fluke of one song...
not sure.

thanks

I am having a lip sync issue with watching netflix on my ROKU2 when watching a DD+ movie. When I switch it back to 2.0 audio on the netflix options menu the sync issue goes away. Is this an AVR issue, netflix, or Roku2 ? When I stream Amazon on the Roku2 there is NO sync issue

I read in a online user review that the NR609 takes 60 seconds to boot? is that true?

This is correct. If your PS3 was initially setup when hooked up just to the TV, or stereo receiver, it will only be outputting 2.0 sound, not 5.1, or 7.1. You need to perform the automatic audio setup on the PS3 again so it will now output all of the formats your new receiver is capable of receiving, per the directions from JChin above.

Otherwise, there shouldn't really be much tweaking necessary beyond running the Audyssey calibration.

Mine boots up before my projector does, so I can't comment on speed. It's much quicker than 60 seconds, though. I do know that if I turn it on to the "net" (with no display) input, it boots up very quickly.

the boot up time is something they should be ashamed of.

It is more then 1 second becasue it is loading a ton of information when you turn it on. Albeit, it is nowhere near 60 seconds, I am completely happy with the amount of time it takes to turn on.

For the same reason it's more than 1 with your PC/MAC.

Whatever the boot up time, its less than my Blu-Ray player. Good lord.

I push one button on my harmony, and the Onkyo, my projector, and my Blu-Ray player all start at once. The BD player is always the last one to finish booting. My Win7 HTPC on the other hand is always in sleep mode, so it starts up nearly instantly.

When I first set her up last October, I tried using PCM which did avoid the dropouts, but she wasn't happy with the matrix surround vs. true 5.1. The good news is, I checked with her last night and she says she hasn't noticed any dropouts for a while, so I guess at some point in the last 4 months DirecTV finally got its act together.

For mine, from a deep-sleep start (no network control/RIHD/ARC), it takes about 11-12 seconds until the speakers click on. I think the actual 'boot' is probably few seconds faster than that. Realistically, it isn't all that different than my previous receiver (Sony STR-DB930). The main delay is just waiting for the amp to settle down and it turns the speaker relay on.

Sounds like it's doing a HDMI Negotiation. Not sure I would blame the AVR for that.

With the Harmony, I make sure the Onkyo is the first thing turned on in the system power-up sequence. See if that helps.

quick question, do HT system speakers have a slight pop when you mute the system? is this normal?

Thanks

How do you control the sequence of startup on the Harmony
is it easy to do?

With the software, yes ... it's easy.

Do you have a Harmony?
What remote do you use? Does it run macros?
You have the Onkyo in the middle as controller, right? (on all the time if using system)

Hi,
I have an Xtreamer prodigy media player hooked up via HDMI to an Onkyo tx-nr609 receiver with JBL ES 5.0 speakers .

I realize crackling sounds from speakers when I
1. change subtitles
2. continue to play the movie after "pause"

any idea?

Thank in advance

Need some help from someone with a TX-NR509. I'm replacing my HDMI board soon and was wondering if someone could post a pic showing the orientation of the 3 black cables that plug into the HDMI board. The cables have a stripe on 1 end of each cable for orientation purposes.

Much appreciated to anyone that can help

Is there anybody that can help me with setting up an Onkyo TX-NR609. This is totally new to me after coming from a basic yamaha Reciever. I get totally confused in using the steps to scroll through the menus, as I believe the owners manual leaves a lot to be desired. I am trying to get the unit to access the Net wireless. I have purchased the Onky USB wireless adapter, and had worked with a Tech last night, and had gotten the reciever to recognize my wireless Router, which is gone now, as another Tech had me do a reset on the reciever. I was told I need to do a Firmware update on unit, which I fear as something will go wrong. Basically I need someone to hold my hand and walk me through this update and helping my understand which buttons to press as you go through the menus, also steps from start to finish in doing this update. Any help would be so greatly appreciated.
