How do you get the app to recognize your unit. I have the app loaded on my Ipod and Iphone, but it's not being picked up. I also was told I must do the update?
I just registered to express my frustration with my 609.

I decided on the 609 based on the following specs I was looking for in an AVR.
- 7.1 & 3D Ready
- DLNA Capable
- Audessey
- At least 5 HDMI inputs with one front facing port (the more the merrier)
- Front facing USB
- THX Certified
- Wi-Fi Connectivity (this was a big one for me)
- Aesthetically pleasing

There wasn't quite enough in the 709 for me to justify it over the 609, so 609 I went.

I made the purchase and life was great... for the first 19 days. Then one morning, it decided to stop relaying the video signal to my TV. Low and behold the HDMI board went bad. 19 days was all it took. Luckily I was within the 30 days period from the store and returned it for a full refund rather than dealing with the repair options.

But now I'm stuck at a crossroads. I've been searching high and low and I can't find a suitable replacement that I like. I absolutely love the design and features packed into Onkyo's units. But I'm also absolutely terrified that the HDMI board issues are going to become a recurring nightmare if I go with another Onkyo unit.

Which app?

There's a couple reasons why an app might have difficulties, one is a messed up network stack in the AVR - you also cannot stream anything either.

If you can stream OK, try typing your AVR's IP address in Safari. If Safari cannot load the settings page, you probably have your wireless and wired network on different networks and they cannot see each other. If that's the case, you'll need to set up port forwarding or put the AVR in the wireless router's DMZ (if supported).

I run an all Apple network and have the WIFI running in bridged mode. That way everything can see each other fine.

My recommendation would be to just try another 609. I understand why you're gun shy about going with Onkyo again. But for every negative story like yours there are many more that are perfectly happy with theirs. I know I am. After all, you've done all the research already and found that the 609 best fits your needs right? I did the same thing and came to the same conclusion and am very happy I did.

Worst case is you defy what have to be very high odds and get another bad one, which you can also return and try something else. Best case is you get the unit you wanted all along and enjoy like so many others do.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

hey folks, i recently got one of the 609 units.
i love it !

i've got one question about the subwoofer pre-outs.

currently i have 2 subwoofers hooked up; a BIC F12 (excellent sub btw!) and the subwoofer from my old Logitech z5500 system, set in the rear left of my room.

i noticed that when i have both hooked up, the volume level of both subs are maybe half or less of what they would otherwise be on their own.

my question is this:
are the 2 pre-outs tapping the same signal (like a Y splitter cable) effectively cutting the signal "power" in half ?
OR
does each pre-out get its own .... full strength signal .... (not sure of the technical term here) ?

i was thinking; there was a possibility they may actually be working as they should but, it was the phase that's canceling each sub's intensity..

i experience this with movies, music, as well as playing a test tone (i set it around 47Hz). if i unplug the Logitech sub, the volume level on the BIC goes back to normal.

sorry for the lack of technical terminology here, but im just getting into the home theater / audio game, and am hoping someone can set me straight on this.

thanks

**Edit

also is it possible to have different dB boost levels per sub pre-out ?

I contacted Onkyo, explained the situation and was referred to a local service center to be evaluated. The tech appeared to not know much about setting up the system, so he did go online and did a bit of research. He claims that my receiver is working as designed. Mine was boxed up when I was there to pick it up, he showed me a 608 that he had and kinda showed me how that one worked.

Can someone suggest how to set up the Easy Listening mode for a PS3 (slim) HDMI cabled to the receiver. I am running a 5.1 set up. I did run Audyssey calibration.

What do I set the BD modes to? I mainly want the surround to work with Movies and Games for my son.

I am truly at a loss with this receiver, it is much too advanced for me from what I am beginning to realize.

If anyone can point me to the right set up or where to go, i'd appreciate it. I continue to not be able to get the center channel to work other than all channel stereo.

Hi ilike_bikes, was the PS3 working well with NR609 before going on vacation? See my respond to your previous post here.

Some setup suggestions
- go into receiver menu "Listening Mode Preset" for the PS3 input and set Dolby D/Dolby D Plus/TrueHD and DTS/DTS-ES/DTS-HD to "Straight"

- go into PS3 XMB, under Video Settings set "BD/DVD Audio Output Format (HDMI)" to Bitstream

- also under Sound Settings make sure to set "Audio Multi-Output" to Off which is found under Sound Settings.

Note sometimes a Blu Ray disc will default to the standard DD/DTS track, so you might have to manually select the TrueHD/DTS-HD soundtrack. Normally this will be found under Audio or Language Setting.

after some further testing i can confirm that the 2 subwoofer pre-outs share the same signal source, so power levels are halved when using 2 subs.

what i cant understand is why the subs cant make use of the signal; being powered subs and all.
is there some setting im missing to enable the second subwoofer pre-out ?

anyone have input on this ?

JChin,

Thanks for the advice, I believe it helped. I played around with it last night and got the center channel to work playing Avatar. It sounded much better than before.

Still not sure what to do with all the other listening mode outputs.

Thank you so much for your help and taking the time to explain it to me.

The App on my Iphone and Ipod is the "Onkyo Remote2". You could be right about being on 2 different networks, because I have Fios, and if I plug in the eithernet cable, the Net is fine, but if I try to go wireless using the Onkyo Wireless adapter, no go. I even bought a second, newer wireless Router, plugged it in to my cable that was plugged in to 609. Reciever recognized the new Router, but still unable to load Pandora, Serius, etc. Support said I need to do Update, but I am a little nervous to do this, and they say they won't help do this. Also can anybody explain the correct menu procedures to get around in this unit, or is there better documentation other than the user manual. I totaly get lost.
Thanks to all.

I have purchased the Onky USB wireless adapter, and had worked with a Tech last night, and had gotten the reciever to recognize my wireless Router, which is gone now, as another Tech had me do a reset on the reciever. I was told I need to do a Firmware update on unit, which I fear as something will go wrong. Basically I need someone to hold my hand and walk me through this update and helping my understand which buttons to press as you go through the menus, also steps from start to finish in doing this update. Any help would be so greatly appreciated.

I strongly suggest that you take the Onkyo over to your router and connect an ethernet cable from the router to the ethernet jack on the back of the receiver and then navigate to the Network settings and tell it to look for an update. You must update the receiver before the USB dongle will work properly. After you do the update, you can disconnect the ethernet cable and put your receiver wherever you are going to actually use it and install the USB dongle on the front and select Net from your remote and it should show the available networks in the area, including yours. You can use your remote to select your network and then it will ask you for the password and you should be connected to the internet.
Good luck!

Two questions for the group.

1. Is the audio quality of the 609 better than the 509? If so by a little or a lot?

2. How is the quality of the internet radio streaming on the 609 (and 509)? I listen to Internet radio a lot and noticed that the quality of a Live 365 stream through my Tivo box was noticeably worse when I stream it through an imac.
Just an FYI, I saw that the 509 was on sale for $199 at Fry's yesterday.
Quick question about the Audssey setup in the 509. Is the one adjustable crossover point that I'm seeing basically setting up the crossover for the everything in the 5.1?

So if I set it for 80hz that's basically sending 80hz and up to the 5 and 80hz and below to the .1? I take it there's no independent crossover in the 509 for each channel? If so I can't seem to find it.

This is probably because the 313 and 414 are out now with the 515 and 616 due in a few weeks.

Thanks for the input. After a few days to mull things over, I decided to upgrade to a 709.... with a 4 year extended warranty Now here's to hoping I don't have to utilize that too much, lol.

Spare yourself the trouble and frustration. Return the wifi dongle and find another solution. It is a useless product and that simply won't work. See just these 2 examples of people with problems...

If you read through those or the bad reviews on Amazon, you will find suggestions for much better (but bigger) wifi dongles, or a wireless bridge.

Good luck.

I bought this USB adapter, http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...cm_cr_asin_lnk , along with a USB extension cable and it easily doubles the reception signal over the Onkyo adapter. I went from 38-40% with the Onkyo adapter to over 84% with the TP-Link adapter. And all this for little to no difference in total cost!
The extension cable I got was 10 ft, so I could move it around to capture the best signal possible. Of course, hard-wiring with an ethernet cable cuts out all the extra hassle this entails...

You can use Zone2 (with RCA analog source) with the speakers in the same room.

Or ...

Connect RCA analog source to audio only input like CD. Switch on TV, then to CD. You should be watching TV, but listening to whatever is on CD.

if i use zone 2 then i woudl need another set of speakers that would be dedicated to the zone 2 in the same room ? , my speakers are bridgeable i think its called , has 4 pegs on it connected with brass bars. wonder if theres an option there as well for me

PS: thanks for the fast responce , really appreciate that

welp i just removed the briodge on the speaker for a test , and only have the tweeter working , so guess that wont work for me , its made to power with a seperate amp , i gonna have to find 2 speakers to use and jsut set them in the same room

As you found out ... that is something different. I think they call it bi-amp. You remove the bar and it disables the speaker's built-in crossover. You connect the internal speaker cones to the amp separately (usually the same amp).

Therefore, by turning off the TV, the 609 is still receiving the signal from the DCX and it will not go into auto standby. I also tried shutting off the DCX, but the 609 never went into standby.

I have read through this topic and am having the same issue. The Comcast DCX set top box and my 509 do not play nice! For some resoan the set top bos settins are getting chages automatically. And they are wrong. Did anyone ever find a fix?

Just set up my new 609 tonight and so far everything is going smoothly. But, am concerned about the volume. On my old 606, normal room listening level was at around 20-25. On this new 609 I have to turn volume up to around 50-55 just to hear clearly. Is this normal? Thanks guys for any advice and feedback.

Hello Kiddikop,

Yes this is normal. I average around 40-50 for everyday listening.
What listening format are you using? That may play a role in it as well. I find when i use the THX format i have to go even higher.

I have a streaming Sirius XM question on the 609. After streaming for quite a while a message will come up asking if I am still listening. It will stop and I will have to go to the receiver and respond that I am still listening. How can I stop this message from appearing?

Hey thanks so much for quick reply. I'm currently toying around with different listening modes but I see what you mean about THX! Now I'm not worried. This unit was actually a gift given to me last summer, was an in-store display model that I've only just now been able to set up, so I was worried that something might be wrong with it. It actually sounds great, and the separation I am getting on my speakers is far beyond any other receiver I've ever owned....very pleased so far but haven't even begun to think about updating the firmware or connecting to net. That sounds like a nightmare.

I solved a major problem of not having enough HDMI outputs by buying an HDMI splitter from monoprice. On my old 606, the HDMI output was having trouble passing the signal. I needed two outputs (one for projector, one for tv), and the delays in switching to HDMI were getting very frustrating. Once I bought the splitter/switcher thing, suddenly I had NO MORE delays. For some reason, that little $20 item solved those problems. So now, if the HDMI channel starts to go out on the 609, hopefully I can fix it again with that little gadget. Hope this helps someone else. Thanks again.

AFAIK, you can't, even with the premier subscription; however, please post back if you figure out a way to do it.
