I bought my 509 a month or 2 ago form ABT electronics. I called and talked to the same guy that I always buy from and he gave it to me for $299 shipped. They have been going for $349 from every other place I've seen.

I have one question. Does anyone know the output voltage of these things? I'm about finished building my HT sub and will be going with either an EP2000 or EP4000 pro audio amp. I need to adjust my gains accordingly and didnt know if I missed this info somewhere.

Thanks for the heads up. After applying this update, my NR609 reports its firmware version as 1041-0500-0010-4102.

This time the update worked fine over the network.

Just picked up a 509. I am happy with everything expect when watching tv through my Dish network box. I have it hooked up with hdmi. I like it better to listen just in stereo as not all tv programs have good surround. I set it to stereo with sub, but sometimes when I switch channels it clicks, goes to a different sound format, clicks again, then goes back to stereo with sub.

When I hit channel up or down it clicks more often. When I switch channels from the guide, it clicks less often.

Is there any way to fix this, or is this just the way it is?

Looking at upgrading from an older Pioneer VSX-D811S, mainly because I'm moving to 3D and I need to either get a 3D Blu-Ray player with analog outs or upgrade the receiver. I've considered the Oppo 93 BDP, but at the price of that unit I'm thinking it might just be time to get a new receiver. Thoughts? Bells and whistles aside, how much of an upgrade is the 609 over my D811S from an audio quality perspective?

I have the same after downloading from the eu site.

part of the release notes said enhanced osd.. looks the same to me. still have an hdmi handshake issue with my older hitachi crt hdtv

The 05/12/2011 update addresses the following:
1. Improves the noise with Picture Mode (Edge Enhancement, Custom, Cinema)
2. Improves the picture quality
3. Improves [NET/USB] playback
4. Enhances the display on the screen (OSD)

Well, from what I see, they fixed the issue where the network protocol failed to get the net artist, album and title. It still causes problems with audio when asking the listening mode or input source.

Damn, just fired up the system and found that after 18 hours the network is dead. Had to pull the plug to get it going again.

Hello,
I have the 709, but this is the closest forum I could find.
1) Does any one know how to program in a code in the remote control set up menu. It has 2 numbers preprogrammed into the menu for the device I'm trying to control but neither of those work and I can't figure out how to stick a different number in.
2) Does any one know what the remote control number is for the 709 so that I can program the 709 into a universal remote? I've emailed Onkyo but they have not responded so I figured some one here might know. So far I've tried: 0135. 0182, 0782, 0842, 0882 & 0890 and none of those work????
Thanks.........

Onkyo 509

Just set it up and happy, but I am a little disappointed in the surround sound quality. I think I got better sound from my old Samsung HTIB speakers. Sometimes I think my center is too low, or not clear and easy to hear if that makes sense. I have an apt and here is my speaker setup:

Audio Pro powered sub
Infinity towers with dual 5/1/2 drives and a tweeter
Audio Pro satellites for my rears
Two speakers spliced together from my tv (olevia 747i) as my center

1) Could it just be that my messed up group of unmatched speakers are causing my dissatisfaction?

2) I was thinking of getting the Energy Take Classic 5.1. Does anyone think that would improve my clarity?

3) Would that speaker system be okay with the 509?

I'm trying to get Onkytroller to work on my EVO. When I go to the IP in my web browser I get the Onkyo info page as I should. I have the Network control enabled and I'm using the default port. I have double, nay quadruple checked the IP and port number in Onkytroller. Every time I touch the lightening icon it tries and fails.

I have the 609 connected to a Cisco bridge but the Onkyo's IP is different and works in Firefox. Any ideas?

Thanks for the response. Problem solved. The Swift keyboard I'm using on my EVO automatically places a space after a period. I missed one so the IP the Onkytroller was using was 192.168.01. 19. At least I found it. Not too shabby for an old man of 73, huh? This is going to be neat to use for the audio stuff on the Net without turning on my 82" Mits. Wish it had volume control or did I miss that also? Just checked another site and the Pro version uses your telephone volume control. May have to buy it.

Right now I'm just trying to get some basic commands from my Onkyo to my cable's learning remote and vice versa. I'm looking around now for a new remote, probably a Harmony One but untill then, I'd like to at least be able to watch TV and change the volume on the receiver with just one remote.

And I just checked Remote Central (after your suggestion, thanks for that) but I couldn't find codes for my cable box or the 709.

gotta love typos! At 73 if you are using technology like this - rock on brother! I know people in their 40's who can even dial the cell phone!

On my droid x, the volume rocker on the side is the volume key. If you get a chance, check to see if when you are streaming music (pandora) and onkytroller is connected - see if you get audio dropouts - kind of like pandora is buffering.

Do you have the Pro version? The free won't control the volume on my EVO. And yes. I noticed the dropouts earlier. After reading your post I killed Onkytroller and the dropouts stopped. So, that solved that. I don't need it on continuously anyway. Thanks.

On a more serious note..
The 4K is more of a marketing tool than anything, I do not beleive there are any current consumer 4K display devices. They could have an 8K chip in there, but you will only be able to display the max resultion of your TV (720p, 1080p, ect).

Not only that, but it will be buggy as hell. HDMI still does not have all if its issues sorted out yet.

I just finished installing the latest firmware update on my 609. It took about 15-20 minutes via network from start to finish.
I found a couple of problems with the new firmware:

Anything connected to the Onkyo via network (Onkyo's remote app, my own remote app, or any other) will eventually be dropped after a few hours.

I've also had the network die totally, requiring pulling the power plug to get it back.

Querying the listening mode or input source causes the AVR to drop the audio on net playback.

Requesting the playback status from the AVR via network commands results in a garbled message with junk data - until something is played. Someone didn't initialize their variables correctly.
Hopefully onkyo will listen and fix the network issue. I have seen a similar issue with onkytroller being connected and the audio dropouts. I have nothad any issuewith the network dropping - however connection time has been limited.

I'm not using Onkytroller (have iPhone app). Any recommendations + or - whether to update with this FW or not?

Nothing wrong with updating, they fixed more than they broke. The really annoying issues remain unfixed.
I have now experienced the network drop. Took me an unplug to get it running again. Although before I unplugged, I was able to use the web browser to get into the 609 but I could not use onkytroller or a telnet session to establish with the 609.

This is typical of the network control on Onkyos. Eventually they will get it "mostly" fixed where you don't need to worry a out it too much.

Hey guys,

Im in Canada and just got my 370 a few days ago. I also have the above problem. The posted link is not in English and I cant translate it on my phone. Is the above an issue that the firmware update fixes? I'm still waiting for UWF-1 adapter but need to know if I have a deffective unit and should exchange it, run out and get a USB stick to upgrade the firmware or if I can wait for the adapter? Ive checked the firmware info and the 609 specifies this issue but the 709/370 firmware only states "improves video".

Onkyo claims it is a firmware issue and the problem was not seen on the 709. Evidently, it does exist on other models and now it is just a "wait and see" as to when they fix it. If the 609 was "cured", then I'm pretty sure the 709/370 will follow suit.

do we need to hit up onkyo with emails about the network issues?

Yes you do. I know they read the support requests "eventually". They are also quick to blame problems on operator error. So if they get numerous reports, it's hard to ignore.

Still on original firmware here.
