You should be good then if I understand it correctly. Everything that I have read indicates that the big limitation of zone 2 is that nothing that comes in to the receiver via HDMI can be sent out to that zone. I bought a model with a powered zone two for the same reason you did. Consequently, if I want to listen to my DishNet audio stations, I will just use an R+L RCA connections in to the receiver in addtion to the HDMI so I can sent the audio to my 2nd zone.

FYI about Frys. I've shopped there for over 10 years (Dallas) and have learned the hardway that Internet pricing and instore pricing are unrelated. Sometime the Internet price is lower sometimes the instore price is lower. They will not always change the price to the lower one.

I actually had to go back home and make a purchase online to get the online price. Then go back to the store that I just came from to pickup the item. I've also seen where the instore price listed on the display is not the actual price. I inquired about a tv then saw on the computer that the tv I really wanted was $150 off the display. So I got it then and there.

You have to do a lot of leg work with Frys. I have to check weekly on prices instore and online. It's a pain, but Frys beats all the other hands down (even microcenter on the big items).

I would not pull a one man boycott because of a bad experience. You'll only be hurting yourself. Eveyones customer service sucks. Frys at least let's you return within 30 days, no questions asked.

I have used Newegg for years and never had a single problem with them even on some price matching issues and returns. I know the 609 has the THX cert but the RC360 can be had at under the mentioned sale price online with free shipping. The price will go up at this site but every few days it drops down again. I was Afraid to say where or Mention priZe due tO the sites rules. LOL

I came off soundiNg like I was bashing Onkyo earlier and the point was made that all this stuff is new and a firmware update MAY in fact fix a lot of these issues. I can't find any receiver near this price range that does 1/2 the stuff these 609/rc360 can do so I may retract my judgement for now.

No, you were right about the receiver.. I called Onkyo and they said bad receiver and to send it back to Amazon and get a replacement. They have a pretty cool return policy for replacements.

BTW - you missed an 'A' in your suggestion about the aforementioned seller.

Newegg is good about accepting returns as long as you contact them and get an RMA first, but their return policy can vary from item to item. In the case of that receiver, there is one catch...it's a Limited Replacement Only item, meaning that it can only be returned for a replacement with the same item, no refunds. If there's any chance that you might get the receiver then change your mind, you should buy elsewhere.

While it is correct to think of Pandora and other streaming sources as "digital", by the time the AVR gets it from the network hardware it was already processed into an analog signal.

My GF's gonna kick my ass very soon.

Great price.

Can the 709 be used to output to essentially 3 zones, Zone 2 obviously but also the extra 2 surround channels? (but I guess those extra 2 channels would play the same material as the mains, eh? could still be useful)

FWIW, Newegg's regular return policy requires return shipping paid by the customer even on defective items and if you request a refund, it is a 15% restocking fee. I received some RAM last week for a new computer which was DOA, and they quickly offered me a free shipping label for a replacement and no restocking fee on a refund if I wanted. They said the policy is only there to combat abuse. They may not be so loose with their policy on a $650, 30 lb AVR, but maybe a call might sort that out.

I have bought many things from them in the past but I never had to return it. They should have their return policy on the site. I have just heard that they are very good with their return policy but i would still check the specifics.

Well 5 out of the 6 people that I talked to there were major douchebags to me. When consider that and the fact that I apparently have no way of verifying the price there (because the said that the phone agent lied) and that they are 30-40 minutes away, I don't see myself ever going back there. I have had some bad service, but I have never had that much bad service condensed into such a short and fruitless experience before.

Somebody else had mentioned an HHGregg deal, so I may check that out.

edit: Don't get me wrong. If I knew with certainty that I could get that deal there in the next few days, I would probably drive back there. I burned 60 miles just to get denied and told that I was lied to by their own call center employees, though. They are not worth any effort on my part to try to grab some kind of deal, and they are definitely not worth any business from me on a normally priced item.

Same here..I went to see they would price match with newegg and it was lower then newegg. Paid 399.99 + the 4 year service...Glad I did look it before leaving also...Had them confirm the price before they went and got it...Have not hooked it up yet but can't wait!

edit: I had gone to a SoCal Fry's store...

While salespeople are a mixed bunch, Fry's is not a place to "shop" in so much as it is a place where you already know what you want before you walk in the door.

It's also a good showroom for items you are considering buying, much like Best Buy. I would never count on the sales people to be knowledgeable.

Don't be discouraged by these people's bad experiences. The reason it seems like all the threads are filled with negative stuff is cause the people who are happy with their product are busy using and enjoying it. For the people who have problems, the first thing they do (and understandably so) is desperately run to the forums to try and find help. Most of them will eventually get things worked out, either through the forums, a firmware update, phone tech support or just sending it back for a new unit.

Onkyo (and Yamaha, Dennon, etc.) all have great products, and once you find which brand's features/price is best for you, you shouldn't be hesitant to buy any of them.

Any one else concur?

Ha! No shame in running to the forum seeking desperate help! I've certainly been there.

I've had no problems with my TX-NR609 by the way; I still read the forum though.

If I am only going to run a 5.1 system, do I actually need the Multi EQ version of Audyssey that comes on the 709 or would the 609 work for me? Sorry, I am a HT newbie.

I'm with you... Unfortunately in my case it ended up being a new unit.

Tangent subject. Can anyone PM me on how the iPhone app for this site works? I can't post ?!?

Having a couple of issues with my new NR-609. First, every time I turn it off it then back on it somehow resets the video output settings on my cable box? I will set it to output 1080i and to stretch 4:3 but I turn the receiver off then on again and it goes back to 720p and preserve 4:3 any idea how it is doing this?

Second, one of the reasons i upgraded my receiver was for DTS Master Audio & Dolby True HD audio formats. But I can't seem to get either one. I have a PS3 as my blu-ray player, does it even output those formats? I thought it did? I tried both Inception (DTS-MA) and the Dark Knight(Dolby THD) but neither format played through the receiver.

I can't speak to your first question, but regarding the DTS and True HD formats read this. Very informative:

The older fat PS3 cannot bitstream lossless codecs. If that's the type of PS3 you have, set it to PCM. The player will decode and send multichannel PCM. It's the same audio you would get from a player that can bitstream. You just won't see the codec on your receiver display.

Anyone else having the issue I have, where the front left speaker occasionally "pops".
It's as if it disconnects for a split second.
I did try a different speaker and double checked the conection.
Also did I complete a firmware update already.
WOW, I feel bad about people having to have all these issues. Looks like I will be forced to join you all. Looks like the 609 and the 360 are literally the only receivers under $700 to offer powered zone 2 without giving up or rerouting the 2 rears!?!?! So much for decisions.

Can someone confirm if Zone 2 can be EQed separately from the mains?

I have outside porch speakers and I have them hooked up to my old sony as the "B" speakers and they are sounding less than good without some help. I can't image that any receiver would be able to use audissey to correct a second room/zone, especially an outside porch, that would be crazy. but I'd like to at least eq zone 2 separately.

Has anyone with the TX-NR509 been able to successfully set up the Onkyo iPhone app? I have it downloaded but the 509 is not displayed in the list of receivers in the app.

They haven't updated the list in quite a while. The onkyo app should be able to auto detect the receiver and connect, at least that's what mine does with the 609. Still waiting for Oremote latest update to be released so I can just do away with the official app.

There are tone controls (Bass, Treble) but thats about it. They can be set via network commands. These were in the 2010 models at least, but likely also exist in the 2011 models. I don't have the protocol spreadsheet in front of me now to verify the 609 has it, but I'm pretty sure it does.

Edit: I dug up the sheet. The 509 and 609 do not have tone controls in Zone 2. The 709 may not (708 did not last year), but the 809 likely does.

We are all waiting :-)

Though I usually sweat it out for 24-48 hours after a release.

THAT SUCKS So does it send zone 2 with a flat EQ? Well, I guess I can just hope that the Onkyos "flat" sound is brighter than my Sonys.

That I cannot tell you, but I would guess so.
does anyone think that integra is more reliable? as in not having some of the hdmi issues the onkyo 609 seems to have?

I'm really comparing the integra dts-40.2 since it is at the lower end with network ability. I know the dts-40.2 is really more comparable to the nr709, but the 609 does have networking.

New FW update online (6-1-11)

The 06/1/2011 update addresses the following (all above listed models):
1. Improves audio/video output in HDMI Through mode
2. Stabilizes setting of a static IP address in Network Settings
3. Improves audio output when using Audyssey DSX
