How about this teaser...

When both TVs were in 60Hz mode, black levels were extremely close... Close enough that in a totally dark room with a high black content/very low APL image the VT30's blacks were just barely darker to the eye.

Naughty boys stirring up the pot like that ;-)

I see you have been taking lessons from D-Nice on saying something to get us all riled up and then leaving us all hanging

On more serious note, I have a 65vt 25 and have the upgrade bug and am considering the 64d8000 or the 65vt30. I can get a sweet deal on the 64d8000 at HH gregg but play a lot of XBOX live. How is the lag time on playing games with the d8000. I thought I read once ...many month's ago...that for the 2010 models the Panasonics had less lag...or at least I thought I read it

So basically your saying that the Panasonic is not worth the extra $800-$1000 more

Thanks Chad. Can you comment on the APL limit of the two sets? On my D8000, I get roughly 13 FtL on a full field white image (with cell light at 20 and contrast at 96). This limit seems in line with last years samsung models. From what I gather, last years panasonic models put out roughly 17 FtL on a full field white image. Curious if you see similar results.

Nice tease, Chad. Some quick questions...

- Will you be reporting rough ANSI contrast ratios for the VT30 and D8000?
- Did you see floating luminance / aggressive ABL behavior on either?
- Have you calibrated a D6500 or D7000 yet, for comparison?

Thanks as always.

Can somebody with a 64D8000 please measure from the top of the tv to the center of the top mounting holes? Mine is on order and I have my sanus mount that I'd like to get trial fit for installation. Thanks.

I would recommend you wait for the TV rather than put holes in your wall based on somebody else's measurements.

I had the same question before I got mine and no one would confirm the hole locations. The mounting holes are centered on the back of the TV. They are a VESA 400 X 800 pattern. I used a little math and the dimensions from the manual (I do not remember which ones, but the manual has an error and swaps two dimensions, as mentioned in an earlier post) and marked my holes. Once the TV arrived, I confirmed my measurements were right on (which they were) before I hung the mount.

I understand your concern final holes won't go in until the TV arrives. I'm reworking a recessed wall in my house and sanus's height finder says the TV is 36" when samsung says it's 35" I just want to get an idea of where my backing plate in the wall will need to be.

I believe that they are 400 x 600 not 800 yes the manual that was posted here had them reversed they should be wider than they are tall. Centered would be perfect for my application.

why doesn't the component cable adapter work on my pn51d8000? everything is color coordinated so it can't be that i connected it wrong.

i get the same message every time i try and play my xbox. no signal check power source.

i have it set for HD on the xbox component cables. any suggestions?

I couldnt get a completely accurate measurement because my 64d8000 is already mounted, but its about 8.5 inches
post #1544 of 5052
I don't if anybody noticed but cnet has the TC-P55VT30 and the PN59D8000 slated for review. BTW I told a friend at work about the calibration thread for Samsungs and he is going to try the settings on his PN59D8000. I'll ask him about it on Monday.

This is absolutely INCORRECT. The mounting holes are NOT centered.

From the top of the display on the 64" set, it is 9 1/8" to the center of the top mounting hole

And, as stated before, it is 400 x 600 (not 800)

I just wall mounted a 59D8000. I can tell you two things. First, the overall dimensions of the TV are located in the manual. Unfortunately, there is no measurement to the mounting holes from the top or the bottom. On my 59", however, the distance was about 8" (from the top of the TV to the top mounting hole on the back). I mounted my omnimount with perfection using my measurement and the measurements from Samsung (so I'd go with Samsung's measurements).

BTW, how long can it take to install the mount after you get the TV? I mean all you have to do is drill the holes, screw the bolts into the plate, and then hang it. You should wait until you get the TV and double check your measurements (IMHO).

FYI: The manual has the dimensions between the mounting holes. It just doesn't tell you the dimensions between any of the mounting holes and the exterior dimensions. That was a major flaw of the manual, IMHO.

The mounting holes are centered horizontally not vertically, I believe.

It's also helpful to have somebody help with the measurements. I had my wife hold a level then I ran a tape measure to the holes.

question about 3D... after being totally indifferent previously, now that I have this TV (59D8K)I cannot stop thinking about getting it, even though I will need to upgrade my BR player to do so, and then decide if I want to get a dual HDMI player or go for a less expensive player, but upgrading my receiver...
Anyway... I have a question about glasses... My TV was a present from an extremely generous family member, and it did not come with a 3D starter package, and I figured it would be horribly bad form to even ask about contacting BB about it, so I am looking at these independently.

Anyway... As far as I can tell, ignoring color variations, there are 3 types of glasses
3100 basic model, battery operated (not sure what type) $47 on Amazon,
3300 lightweight, rechargeable $108 on Amazon
3700 ultralightweight, rechargeable, $114 on Amazon

Don't hugely care about megamind, so would not buy the starter pack for $175 when I can get the two glasses for 90, but trying to figure out if the upgraded models are worth it. Don't see myself watching THAT much 3D, since I would imagine that the movies I really care about seeing in 3D I will actually find a sitter and go out for, but I would still like to have decent comfort and quality. Anyone have any experience with the different types and be able to provide comparison?

Have somebody scan and post the dimensions from the manual (I can't seem to locate one online). There are a couple pages with a sketch and the dimensions. They are spot on with my 59".

It's in the "Quick Guide" at the Samsung site for the D series plamsa.

My goal with this set wasn't to get 3D, but since it came with the Megamind starter set (with Shrek 1-4) and the glasses without extra charge, and I already had a PS3, figured why not play with it a bit. Just had to add some high speed hdmi cables and workaround not having a 1.4 AVR for sound (using the AVR to create 7 channel is a slight downside of my current setup, using optical out of the PS3 to the AVR).

I did get a few more movies as for the animated/cgi stuff I gotta admit it's pretty entertaining, adding just enough more to make wearing the glasses while watching tolerable. Not so much on standard film scenes (like the beginning of Alice in Wonderland). The 3100 glasses are okay comfort wise, and not really a great fit for my face, but better than what I got in an IMAX theater for Avatar; the weight isn't bad and being battery powered vs rechargeable isn't a great big deal, doubt I'll buy batteries any time soon.

what kind of batteries does it take... read somewhere they are really hard to replace... 3D was definitely not a driver for me getting the set, but like any electronic goodness, hard to resist...

Batteries are just standard button, Walgreens even has then, no big deal to replace.

The holes for the mount won't be drilled until the tv arrives. As mentioned before i'm reworking a wall in a house that had a recessed opening for a flat panel tv mount, my tv must be bigger than the previous owners and as long as the dimension (top of tv to centerline of top hole) is greater than 8" I'm good to go. Just wanted to verfy that the fasteners for the wall bracket will have something to hit prior to repainting and drywall work. Once my TV comes in I'll put the final holes in for perfect placement.

Just doesn't make sense to me why they don't give some locating dimensions. It's like trying to determine how long a trip from Houston to Minneapolis via Kansas City will take knowing only the distance between Kansas City and Minneapolis. I should be good, everything is going back into the wall. Thanks for the help.

Most people want to hide the cords for a professional look, so there is more than just screwing the bracket to the wall and the set.

If you are installing a power and/or cable outlet behind the set, it helps to know where you'll be mounting the bracket to get the cabling behind the set and close to the connection points at the back of the TV.

Thanks a bunch... VERY helpful!
not to sound stupid... but because it is an extra $200 that I could use for a lot of other cool equipment... you thought the 3100 were the most comfortable but you kept the 3300 for primary use... is that because the charging and on/off feature were just that useful?

Does the d8000 series have the feature " motion judder canceller " that was in the C8000 last year?
