Maybe this is a sign I should have gone with the 51inch. I was seriously debating which size to go with. I live in an apartment in NYC, so my sofa is only about 8 to 9 feet away from the wall the TV will hang on. But I figured that bigger is better so I went with the 59 inch.

Im 64" at 10ft, no worries. Id go bigger than the 51" just for the better MLL.

i'm at about the same right now, see pics in sig. but I will gain a few extra inches b/c I may have to hang this unit.

I've tested it at 10.5 and it's great.

nobody ever says, it's too big, haha. doh!

for a few months (until I upgrade my receiver) I will be running video from my blu ray, directly to the tv via hdmi.

Shall I run the blu ray via fiber to my receiver. or send the audio from the tv to the receiver via fiber. prolly the former, correct?
I think toslink would probably be best, so yes #1.

i might add i have had three of these sets and they all do the pops/flucts and it varies to how bad on each set.

the only way to supress these pops/flucts i found is turn cell light down and contrast really low. at the moment mines set at cell light 10 contrast 70 but it still doesnt cure it completly on some material. however you can cure it completly if you put eco soloution energy save on high but that is not a fix as the picture is horibly dark.

like you say there is no need for samsung to use this software as the picture doesnt need it and it so obviouse and distracting. thats why i cant get over people saying they dont see the pops/flucts how can they not?

i hope samsung can adresse the issue in a firmware update if possible but im not even sure if they are aware of the issue or care.

its not helping either that reviewers are not seeing the issue crazy

Maybe it's not a widespread problem as you assume, and certainly by most responses even on forums where this sort of thing is exaggerated it's not a widespread issue. I have no such issue on a PN59D8000 and I run contrast at 95 and cell light anywhere from 10-20 depending on room lighting and material.

I agree with you, my picture dims in different scenes, depending on the amount of white on the screen. This may be due to the basic limitations of plasma TVs. Here's a sample of an article I found:

Here's a quote from an article on the Panasonic plasma:

Just as plasmas sometimes have a hard time with maintaining a consistent black level, there's also the frequent problem of maintaining a consistent white level. Most plasmas will dim their peak brightness as the amount of white on the screen decreases. The thing is, plasmas get hot, and a white pixel is the hottest of them all. If every pixel was producing its brightest possible output, the whole TV might melt. Who knows? It could be apocalypse. Anyway, it doesn't do that. The whites get dimmer, as you can see in the chart below

Here's the rest of the article: http://www.televisioninfo.com/conten...and-Whites.htm

But it seems that others are not experiencing this problem. I'm starting to think that most people adjust the brightness & contrast down quite low and so the tv doesn't use a lot of energy. When there's a white screen, it doesn't have to auto adjust as much to compensate since the screen is already dim.

I watch HDTV programs in Dynamic mode a lot and I see the dimming often. Maybe my choice of watching in Dynamic mode is what's causing the problem. I prefer to watch my local news and all sporting events in Dynamic mode.

My living room has a lot of ambient light so I need the brighter picture to compensate during the day. I also like watching my local news on a brighter setting too. I really don't need or care to see the details of the news anchor's jacket. Everyone has their preference, there is no right or wrong answers.

this being my first post to the forum, hi all, and for the starters thanks very much for the very useful info in this thread. i spent a couple of days reading it thoroughly, and got some great tips and advices. calibration thread for varying samsung models was also very useful.

i have been a very pleased owner of a PS64D8005 samsung for a month, until last sunday. when i was wiping my screen off from dust, i noticed a stuck pixel (or a couple of them) straight in the center viewing area. damned cleaning, shouldn´t ever do it.

anyway, the pixel/pixels aren´t that bad when viewed few meters away (as my normal viewing distance is around 4,5 meters), but just pure knowledge that my beautiful sammy has a slight beauty scratch on her makes me a bit angry, especially since it is a such a new device.

my sam also has a bit of a linebleed, but i have understood that it is quite common in plasmas? although, some of the thread conversators have said that they haven´t seen any linebleed on their devices?

i did a complaint from those issues, truthfully not expecting much, since a stuck pixel and a bit of a linebleed aren´t really that bad after all - especially since i have read other horror stories of peeling, buzzing or what not. mine didn´t have any of those, just the pixels and the linebleed.

well, to my surprise, when i called the maintenance company yesterday they said that my tv is picked up later on to repair. they are probably changing the whole panel on it, since the pixels and linebleed are probably not repairable. as i said, i wasn´t expecting much since i had read many stories from avs forum where the warranty and maintenance has not been covered as it should.

i do not know if it matters where you´re from with the warranty and how it is being handled, but it seems that here in finland the warranty seems to be working quite well, and samsung is taking care of their customers. which is nice, since i have been a samsung customer for quite some time. not a fanboy though, but i do like their products.

well, maybe it´s better to not to start celebrating yet. it´s probably more wise to wait until i get my loved one back from the maintenance, and inspect then if the problems have gone - and especially, have i gotten myself other problems which i have not had yet. although i have not heard here in finland about the peeling issue or the buzzing, it is not to say that it is impossible to get them her also.

well. anyway, thx a lot for the great forum, and for the great info you guys are sharing here for the other fellow sam owners.

edit. the maintenance company just called, and they are picking up my device this evening. only thing that bothers me is the undetaching and repacking the sammy. as you know, it is not the smallest one to be handled. anyway, it is still better to do it and get the panel replaced, than live with those faults for the long period of time which i am planning to enjoy my sam.

I have placed my 5yr old Panny plasma next to the Samsung, with the same source, with no brightness pops. Also, the Panasonic is as bright, if not brighter than the Samsung. If I have to turn down the cell light and contrast so low that it is not noticeable, then I should not have bothered paying a premium for the top model that they make.
I do not use the Dynamic setting, just Standard and Movie (Movie is a little dim and soft for my bright room during the day)

I have not had any other peeling problems come back.

I did not try credit card fix, but I tried something similar with special screen cloth that specifically designed for LCD displays - tried to push air out as much as possible. It helped a little. The bubbles are not as big as right after the delivery. But they are still there and creeping back to their original location. I was doing it almost every night, trying to contain their activity. I'll try credit card tonight.

Tried credit card fix. Unfortunately the bubbles come back.

Just be aware that you won't get HD audio via optical. I assume your receiver doesn't support HDMI?

I currently use optical from the TV to my AVR 3803. Cable is passed through in DD. Blu Ray movies on PS3 also in DD. But PS3 games are in Stereo.

After debating between Panasonic VIERA TC-P65GT30 and Samsung PN64D8000F I made a call for Samsung PN64D8000F. Will be delivered on June 21. Got a good deal from Best Buy I also purchased their 4 year Black Warranty. Hope mine does not have Antireflective coating peeling problem !

I think you made the excellent decision, especially if calibrating.

Check it quickly upon arrival, and if you see bubbles send it back.

You need to ask them what picture mode they will callibrate and if they will calibrate the Color Management System(CMS) and 10 point gamma/greyscale. The only modes worth calibrating are movie, cal-day and cal-night. If they are not going to calibrate CMS and 10 pt. and 3D then you are not getting a complete and proper calibration. You will not see the full potential of your tv. BB is notorious for having a 2 hour time limit. You cannot get a full professional calibration in that time.

donnymac thanks a lot I will take a note of your points. After reading hundreds of post on this excellent forum with lot of you guru's I decided to go with PN64D800 vs TC-P65GT30. To began with I was not going to get it calibrated but since i got a good deal on the tv and Warranty Package i went for it.

i went for one that doesn't tilt. the tv is so thin, I can't see how much tilt you could gain.

my receiver is 1080i, hdmi, NOT for 3D, so I will skip it for the blu ray. However, DD will pass via fiber or spdif, regardless if a receiver doesn't have hdmi, but you said HD audio. I have to get schooled on this. are you saying the latest and greatest sound will only pass via hdmi?

I am shopping for a receiver now anyhow. I don't feel like dealing with video and audio cables going all over the place! seems so 90s
