I am a little worried now. Brightness was 47 contrast was 95. How long does the IR have to remain before its likely to be permanent? Anything else I can do to try and get rid of it?

Certainly possible it´s permanent though unlikely if it´s just some hours gaming. If it´s brand spanking new I noticed on both my D7005s they where sensitive in the beginning. One already had 300h in it and the other brand new that in the beginning the IR came really fast and sticked for quite a while. For both this diminish with some hours on them. Watching a letterboxed movie it takes some time to get rid of the bars perhaps an hour or two still though. so it doesn´t be related to the number of hours on the monitors but maybe if they hasn´t been used for a long while? Since I don´t see that much change on the plasma with more hours vs the one with less.

Anyway the reason I got another was due to the first having permanent IR (demo display) that was impossible to remove so surely it can happen though some will say it´s impossible. 100h+ of roller blinds and regular content and no change whatsoever. I don´t know what people say generally I have seen less then a year as suggestion lol

I have played revelations on the old (I think you can dim the health metre) and I never got the health bars and such to stick though. Maybe 2h max in one session 2D and 3D. Same with infamous 2 probably a bit more. But that you can also reduce the opacity of the hud. Most console games seem to try to accommodate plasma displays. So no permanent IR by my own doing and nothing that has sticked for several hours as of the last weeks. but I am really careful with taking breaks and roller blinds whenever going anywhere.

I use the roller blinds that come with the TV I doubt there is a better way then that.

Thanks for the info. I didn't really think I played too long in a row but apparently the tv disagrees. I'm going to run the roller blinds for a day and see if that fixes it, if not I guess I'll have to get a swap.

I'm out of town until Thursday so I'll run it when I return and report back with my results. In the meantime, beware playing AC Revelations on this set for more than an hour or two at a time (you can turn off the HUD altogether, which makes it difficult to play, but no option to dim).

Hey guys I'm about to pull the trigger on a 64 d8000 can anyone tell me the pros and cons of this model? How is the ir? Blacks? How noticeable is the drop in black level with cs engaged?

The consensus around the net is that the d8000 is preferred over the panny vt30 and it doesn't hurt to be about 600 dollars less. Also I'm a gamer and love 3d blurays (I'm coming off the Sammy c680) and I noticed that the 3d movies I have are all black barred and it leaves terrible ir after watching.

I really don't want to go lcd so please can someone answer for me? Thanks guys.

It sounds like you know what to do. I hope everything comes out alright. Good luck with that.

I haven't noticed a single bit of IR on my 64D8005, and that is even after the children have player with the Wii for hours. And I did no break in what so ever.

I haven't noticed the black level drop when engaging CS but it's clearly there of course since it has been measured so at least for me the difference is too small to notice. Perhaps if I had to sets side by side I would see the difference but my "image memory" is not long enough (at least for black level) to notice when chaning settings.

I'm sure you have seen the "brightness pops" thread so keep that issue in mind, which can be a big deal. There is a "fix" in place and users who request it are being sent a USB stick with updated firmware to take care of the issue. No reports are available yet on the success of this, but should be available in the next 10 days or so when people start receiving them.

I would amend that to "we assume there is a fix in place"

True. Fingers Crossed beach.

Well, since USPS did not run yesterday for the holiday, maybe someone will get the jackpot today.

I have a feeling the FW won't fix the issue. What hunch do you have? lol

I'm with you. I don't have any confidence this will fix the "brightness pops" But I hope I am wrong!!
My biggest fear is that they do correct it at the expense of rising black levels, etc

Read a lot of the reviews and am ready to make my PN64D8000 purchase. Called PC Richard and Son here in NJ and two sales reps from two different stores told me that their systems are telling them it's discontinued. Same for the Panasonic 65" VT30.

Can anyone validate this?
Why should they be discontinued some 3 to 4 months before the E and VT50 models will be introduced while the 2010 models (C and VT25) are not discontinued?

Amazon is out of stock also on a lot of the 2011 models. It's not three to four months for the new models, it's more like 4-6 weeks.

Last night I found that two channels were missing from my channel listing. I did a rescan and found they had moved from 8-1 to 72-1, and 12-1 to 72-2.

I'm using Cox cable clear QAM.

I have a 42" Panasonic plasma that does not have this problem.

I've had my PN64D8000 for 1.5 months.

Should I blame the cable company or could there be something wrong with my Samsung?
I am stupid. I just can´t reorganize the channels. The e-manual don´t help anything here and all my manual fiddling doesn´t work either. This is the first tv ever where I have not been able to reorganize channels without help of manual . Analogue SDTV not digital. Can´t be favourites you should assign right?
It is not out of stock at amazon I just looked today... How low do you think the price will go.... Superbowl is in 3 weeks, Thinking there is one moe price drop before the new models....

4-6 weeks? Hasn't the larger screens always been available from march/april?
The channels are back. The 72-1 and 72-2 disappeared so I did another rescan. I now have 8-1 and 12-1 in addition to a new HD channel (Disney XD). I think the cable company is playing around with stations.

The 8-1 and 12-1 are for my local channel 8 and 12, and I believe there is a virtual naming that occurs. I'm really not that sure on how the naming of channels works with HD channels. What threw me was that my Panasonic did not have the same problem with the QAM channels.

Comparing the QAM tuner in the Panasonic with the Samsung, the Samsung is much faster when surfing and is finding channels that the Panasonic does not find.
That's not unusual with cable.

As far as OTA goes, I think Samsung really provides a top notch receiver. In fact, they have quite an admirable history of ATSC tuners.

Is anyone else having issues using the qwerty keyboard side of the remote? The remote pairs fine but none of the alphabetic keys nor backspace, space, etc keys actually work for me. Our TV also likes to forget we're netflix members so re-entering the that info over and over using the regular remote side gets kind of annoying...

Search this thread, pretty sure this has been addressed earlier. Mine doesn't like to cooperate either, but I don't need it so no big deal plus there are some suggestions I haven't tried. My set doesn't forget the signin, tho.

Definitely searched the thread before posting but didn't see any relevant info. I'll do a more thorough search though.

This is my second PN64d8000 and it definitely doesn't like to connect to anything on the first try so I'm guessing that has something to do with the Netflix login forgetfulness. It's gotten so bad we started using the PS3 instead. So much for being a "smarttv".

I always thought that the keyboard only works for the web browser.
If that is not the case, then I have an issue also.

Updated to 1024.8 and it did NOT fix the brightness pops, although I didn't see that optimization part.....

If that is the case than it's basically useless. Who would want to surf the web on their Plasma TV with a keyboard that small with no mouse? I'd be afraid of IR with all that static content. (No offense if you DO surf the web via the TV).

Anyone looking for a PN64D8000 check my add in the classified section on AVS. It's a good deal.

I think I am having my first image retention issue on my 59D8000. When viewing certain light colored screens, I see a faint horizontal line running across the bottom of the screen, and it is in exactly the location of the ESPN bottom line. I had a 58C8000 for over a year and never had any retention at all- this set is a replacement for that set, and I have had it for about a month and a half- I am guessing approximately 400-500 hours of use.

I just discovered it so the only thing I have done is run the built-in scrolling screen for about an hour, but that did not make the line go away.

Any suggestions?? I do watch A LOT of ESPN. I had my screen set to screen fit, but changed it back to 16x9 after discovering the line. (However, one thing that worries me about that is that makes the bottom line show in a different location on the screen, and its got me wondering if I might wind up with TWO image retention lines on the screen???)

How worried should I be? Any chance this will go away on its own as the set ages?? I am hoping if I run the scrolling screen for several hours it may make it go away. After having to have my first set replaced, I am a little paranoid- hoping to not have to deal with any major issues this time around....

Thanks in advance

I have the same issue. I also seek advice.

When I first got my 51D8000 (last spring), I watched a lot of Fox News on that display. Consequently, when I'd pop in a movie, like the Lion King 3D, in certain scenes I would see the Fox logo and bar at the bottom of the screen. I thought to myself, Oh well, I really screwed this TV up. Guess everything they said about image retention, and perhaps even burn in, was true.

My aunt from France recently visited for a couple of months. She stayed in the room with the plasma. Never watched Fox News, or any show on a regular basis while she was here. When I got the room back and popped in a movie to see what type of image retention my aunt left it with, I saw NOTHING. Even the Fox News logo was nowhere in sight.

So, if you diversify your viewing enough (and run those scroll bars, which I still haven't done), I would imagine the image retention you are both dealing with will eventually disappear.
