This may be a bit late for some....

Honestly if you are a heavy CNN news show or ESPN viewer there is every reason NOT to buy a plasma set.

I see temporary IR even after brief episodes of local TV news on my set with about 40-50 hours on it.

How much of your viewing in about two months is ESPN? Programs with bars should generally be avoided for prolonged viewing for the first 200 hours IMHO.

I'd agree with the last poster- it's time to run the white bars for at least 30 min after each days viewing for at least a week.

I do watch a good bit of ESPN, but no more than any other normal sports loving TV owner- if someone with my viewing habits can't own a Plasma, then pretty much no one can and Plasma tv's would cease to exist. I had a 58c8000 for over a year with no retention..

I am just trying not to freak out and hoping that running the bars will get rid of it..

I thought to myself, Oh well, I really screwed this TV up. Guess everything they said about image retention, and perhaps even burn in, was true.

My aunt from France recently visited for a couple of months. She stayed in the room with the plasma. Never watched Fox News, or any show on a regular basis while she was here. When I got the room back and popped in a movie to see what type of image retention my aunt left it with, I saw NOTHING. Even the Fox News logo was nowhere in sight.

So, if you diversify your viewing enough (and run those scroll bars, which I still haven't done), I would imagine the image retention you are both dealing with will eventually disappear.

I've had my D8000 for over a year, and have dozens and dozens of hours of Call of Duty gameplay on it, sometimes as much as four consecutive hours. I've never had even a hint of image retention, much less burn in, despite the game having a static image nearly the entire time it's running. It's easy - keep the pixel shift function on and don't use torch mode. The screen fit option is not worth the risk of IR or burn in. Oh, and watch MSNBC or CNN instead of Fox News (not for IR reasons, but for real journalism). I used break-in slides, so maybe that helped.

How many hours, approximately, do you have on your TV?

I also have a D8000 and get the same IR at the bottom with ESPN programming, but 5-10 minutes of scrolling and it is gone.

Run your scrolling more; run full screen TV such as HBO. Just let it run for hours and hours until you get it up to at least 100 hrs. At least that's what I did.

I have had the TV for about 2 months- maybe 400 hours or so. I looked closely today and there is no doubt about it- I can see not only a horizontal line, but also a faint ESPN outline. Is there any chance this could be actual burn in and not IR?? Lord, I hope not.......

I am running the scrolling black and white screens overnight tonight- at least 8 hours- I am praying it will be gone tomorrow......

Hahaha...I knew I'd catch some flack for that!

To be honest, I watch quite a few different cable news shows, including CNN and MSNBC. And if REAL journalism is what we're looking for, the PBS Newshour is the way to go (certainly more unbiased than Fox News and, ahem, MSNBC.)

For unbiased news, probably best to NOT watch any aired news at all.

No more scroll bars and info boxes either.

Well, it is bad news- I ran the built in screen burn protection slides for about 15 hours straight, and then ran a screen of "snow" static for about an hour- and the line and ESPN logo are still there- it is faint, but still there........

Does this mean I have true burn in?? Is it possible I still need more time running slides and viewing other programming before it will go away??

I am really worried now...
IR can stick around longer than u think. I had some IR that took about a weeks worth of use to go away. Not to say u don't have burn in, but don't jump to any conclusions right away. Run built in slides for a few days so it's less noticeable, then check on it after a week or two of heavy use. Good luck.
I wanted to get this tv for a long time. But this IR stuff is really scaring me away. Because I watch a lot of sports and ESPN and will play a fair amount of Madden and video games. Is IR hard to get rid of? Do the slides already come with the TV or do I have to download it to a USB and then run it and blah blah blah.

I have a LCD right now which is ok but I always wanted this plasma in particular, except its very hit or miss. LED's dont appeal to me.

Is it recommended to buy from Pauls TV on amazon or directly from Amazon? What is the difference?

The color reproduction score of this tv got me very interested in it. Then the brightness pops and IR discussions are scaring me away too... I thought this IR stuff was a thing of the past with plasma=X

Seems like there's not a tv out there without issues...

Ain't that the truth.

However, all these displays that are being picked apart, whether it be the Sammy, Panny, or Elite, do deliver incredible images. Knowing what I know about the negatives regarding the 51D8000 Sammy that I own, I'm still looking to buy one with a larger screen size in the future; it's that good, as far as image is concerned. Same could be said about the other displays I mentioned earlier.

Put it this way, if I got caught up in all the negative posts regarding any particular TV, I wouldn't buy any of them. Those posts are reflective of the most critical of perfectionists in forums like these. Nothing wrong with that, I'm a bit of a perfectionist myself. But I'm also a realist. And there comes a time where I need to get a TV for a particular room in my house.

So it comes down to personal choice about what is acceptable to you (especially at each display's price point). And with the favorable return policies some stores have, you've got nothing to lose trying out the TV in your own home and seeing how it works for YOU. Afterwards, you can draw conclusions, such as, "Yeah, those guys were right. This issue is bugging the heck out of me." Or, "You know, I'm not seeing what they're talking about, and even if I am, it's not an issue for me."

Don't be afraid to jump in the water. At least for 30 days, you can jump right back out and try something different, or wait for next year's imperfect, but perhaps improved, models.

I think there's plenty of them that are just fine. Mine is (PN59D8000). No brightness pops, no IR (but don't watch much with static images), peeling, buzzing...nada...no issues. Great pic. Crummy speakers and stand, though but not much of an issue since I don't use the speakers nor stare at the stand.

Just purchased exchanged a 55gt30 for the 51d8000. I have it connected thru a receiver and everything works fine except when I use the internet, when watching video on youtube no audio comes thru my speakers. The only way i get sound is when I turn the tv speakers on. Is there anyway to get the sound thru my external speakers. Thanks.

Do you have your tv connected to your receiver via an optical cable? Or are you using ARC and your receiver is compatible? Gotta share some specifics, like how your tv and receiver are connected and what receiver...

HDMI 2 on the TV to the AVR? This is the only thing, your internet app, that doesn't work audio-wise?

Well some may think I am crazy but HH Greg doesn't have any more 59D800 so I bought the floor model for 1450.00 and got the free bl ray with the 2 pair of glasses free. I brought it home set it up and cleaned it up and I don't see any ir which is what I was worried about, because they run a lot of espn in their store. I have 30 days to return if I want. As of right now their is no need it doesn't buzz no peeling and when I hooked it up to my network it did and update. Now just to find the right settings for it and I should be good to go.

I bought the Amazon version, not just "fulfilled by Amazon." It entitled me to Amazon's 14-day price guarantee & 30-day free return. Then I set an alert on camelcamelcamel.com & waited for a price drop. When it happened, I engaged Amazon & had the refund within an hour. Nice program--read the fine print so you know what to expect.

Right now under the "16 new" I'm not seeing any that are on this program, unfortunately.

I haven't had any experiences with Paul's, sorry.

This is the way you deal with IR. When you are watching a TV show, do you see the ESPN logo or do you have to really look for it? If you are watching a show and dont notice it you are fine. If you keep looking hard for it, you will find it. When do you notice the logo?

It is not bad right now- you can only see the IR when there is a white/bright background, and the logo is harder to see than the horizontal line.

I have switched off of screen fit setting, and with pixel shift enabled again I am hoping it won't get any worse and will be the end of any additional IR.

I recently bought a 59d8000 and hooked it up to a Yamaha RX-A2000 receiver. Everytime I turn on the TV and receiver, the receiver automatically jumps to the Audio 1 input. It's really annoying. Does anyone know how to fix this? I feel like it probably has something to do with the audio return channel, but I can't seem to fix it. Thanks...

My PN59D8000 and Onkyo RC-HT370 like to go to the TV setting on the receiver on initial power up, even though my Harmony remote starts off on the cbl/sat setting like I want. Turning Anynet off would probably fix it but then I'd lose other functionality. I just change it back to cbl/sat with the remote and watch...Guess this is the consumer being punished for not having exactly the same brand components throughout the system and not using the exact type of multi-component control that brand wants you to have.

Sorry for the late response, but yeah the internet apps don't work audio wise

I am seriously considering the D8000 64" and where I come from the consumer is poorly protected...
So is there an issue of capacitors with Samsung TVs giving up the ghost still with this 2011 model or other reliability issues in general?
Is there a replacement in the near horizon for this?
And finally, are most of the issues with these telly resolved?

Thanks v much!

I just picked up a 51 8000 for my cousin and hooked up everything via HDMI from a Denon 1912 (FiOs, Wii, 3D BD player-Samsung). I used the HDMI/DVI input on the TV for monitor out from the Denon. This is the only HDMI port i'm using on the tv. Problem is, the source/input keeps switching to "TV" on it's own ?? Anyone know why it might be doing this ? Should i use another HDMI port ? A little frustrating. Thanks.

EDIT- I simply switched to HDMI 2 to see if this happens again. I really have no idea why it was doing this....
