no, I checked the 1024.3 code and there is not a timing board update in it.

In every way? C'mon, you have to admit the picture IS pretty sweet.

It is well known that plasmas are horrible emitters of RFI (thanks to their use of switching power supplies), and I think that point is really being driven home now with the rise of the affordable plasma television:

well hers my story so far, bought lg lcd jan 3,returned it due to flashlighting etc..got the 51d550 had bad ir right away ,even after break in and brightness pops and flickering white pixels after a few weeks, returned it for a new unit, dead pixel right out of the box, also a black cloud about 5 in in diameter middle right of screen, very subtle but when screen is dark you can notice it,not when its bright, so i called best buy again, had to take 2 days and a few hrs talking to different managers but convinced them to wait until the new 51e550 comes out and replace it with that so hopefully they come out soon so i can see if i get another defective unit ,and im assuming ( yeah i know i shouldn't ) that the fbr problem is fixed, crossing my fingers!

ISO images - can these files be played on a D8000? The TV can 'see' the .iso movie files on Win7 and/or DNS323 server via DLNA, and can open the iso file, I can see the DVD main menu. However, when I get to the DVD main menu I do not know how to select the Play button or Settings or other menu buttons. I could not find anything in the manual about this. Anyone knows how to select/navigate main menu buttons when opening/playing an iso image?

EDIT - My intention was to post this in the "Samsung AllShare and Internet@TV Discussion " and did not noticed I am in a different window. Anyway, any input is welcome :-)

Hey guys, I'm about to pull the trigger on the 59D8000 but one thing is holding me back. How is the image judder on this TV (during long pans, motion) with standard Cable/Satellite 60HZ sources vs the Pannys?

Motion interpolation as used on some flat screens is most effective, but many don't like the unnatural effect (and this feature is not included in the D series plasmas). Your only options are to compare 30hz and 24hz and see which you prefer. You may need to manually set your bluray player's output to enable/disable 1080p24. With 24hz out, you can enable Cinema Smooth (under Film Mode) on the TV to natively display the film framerate. This is the most artifact-free way to watch your blurays, but does lighten the blacks very slightly.

Can someone please explain to me the technical reason as to why the black levels rise with 24 Hz on? And does anyone know if this issue is resolved on the PNE8000 series?

I wouldn't expect any difference, and haven't seen any comparison. Side note to avoid confusion - TV is interlaced (60i), so it's just good old 30hz when displayed. There are 2 film source deinterlacing modes for the Samsung, one of which works very well (Auto 2 I believe).

I don't believe there is an explanation. Regardless of what Samsung leaks, I would wait for test results on the E-series to confirm. I know the measured difference is substantial, but in real world use I find it barely noticable.

Cinema smooth plays back at 96Hz compared to 60Hz. The mll is determined by the pixel initialization pulse so if it's being initialized more often the level rises. The rise is roughly 96/60 = 1.6 times the 60Hz level.

Awesome! That makes sense. Thanks for the great explanation.

I am interested in purchasing a PN59D8000 that was briefly used as a floor model, but I want to know how many hours are on the display. I apologize if the answer is already posted, but I have spent the last two days reviewing hundreds of pages of posts across a number of different forums and haven't figured it out.

I am able to enter the service menu by pressing: mute, 1, 8, 2 and then power. However, there is no entry for "panel display time" or anything similar. I know that the television is running the newest firmware: 1024.3 and I am wondering if this made a difference.

Thank you all very much.

Alex

I know on the PN64D8000 its in the service menu under "MRT"

MRT? I've not seen that in the SM. To access hours used for the D8000 you need to follow the directions here.

Hmmm.ok,maybe I was mislead then when I had a tech come out and replace my motherboard and he was the one who pointed it out to me.Thanks for the additional info Zoyd!Although you dont need the Samsung emmulator to access the service menu on the D8000,just the D7000 from what ive been told
post #4634 of 5052
You can access the sm in both with the remote. The emulator is needed to see hours used in the d8000.
I am so grateful for your help. That is definitely not something that I would have figured out by myself.

The panel has 291 hours on it and I can purchase it for $1,500. It seems like a good deal to me, but what do you guys think?

Check it very carefully for image retention, display a solid color or gray picture or use the scrolling image under system->screen protection and look for any residual outlines. If it looks good go for it, it's a great display.

Question - does the 8000 have a better picture quality than the 7000? Or not much differences?

Like Zoyd says, it's not the hours so much as what they did with it for those hours so I'd check for IR/burn-in evidence carefully, too. They let you access the service menu in the store? What kind of return policy does it come with?

aren't they exactly the same units as far as the panels are concerned, save for a couple of online features?
Pretty much the same exact TV. But the 8000 has better contrast ratio and I was wondering if it's worth paying the extra money for the better picture.

The 8000-- contrast ratio (25,000,000:1)

The 7000-- contrast ratio (15,000,000:1)

Both numbers are intended to mislead the yokels.

First off I love my Sammy 8000. It uses blut tooth to sync the 3D glasses to the TV which is excellent. Not sure if 7000 uses blutooth or infrared to sync. I have had zero issues in four months use.

I think the D8000 has some additional processing option to further reduce MLL, but from what I've read nobody uses it (may introduce artifacts). The actual display panel is the same as the D7000, you just get extra features (and a slight edge in color accuracy that the calibrators have picked up on, probably not noticable).

D7000 uses the same bluetooth connection.

I just ordered my PN64D8000 and I cannot wait to get that bad boy fired up.

That said, I do plan on mounting it, any suggestions as to slim mounts?

Also, looking to up my audio game a bit without going full home theatre. Would you suggest I go soundbar route? My living room is 16'x12.5' in my rented apt so I really don't want to go crazy with the wiring and speakers.

Hey folks,

I searched this thread and found numerous people with the same question I have but not a single answer.

Using the QWERTY remote with the web browser is pretty clunky. I called Samsung customer service and asked if a BT keyboard could be paired with the TV but was told no. This doesn't make sense. If the remote and 3D glasses are BT why can't you pair a keyboard with it?

Monoprice definitely. Don't let the good prices fool you, their products are great.

This is the one that I used for both my 52" LCD and my new 64" plasma. It tilts and even has a level built into the fram to help when putting it on the wall and you can't beat the price!

Because Samsung did not add drivers and support for keyboards

Long shot question after a fruitless search -- anyone know any conceptual reason why my shiny new PN51D8000 shouldn't play nicely with the HDMI output on my Onkyo TX-SR605? Any component (e.g., cable box, PS3) works fine if connected directly to the Samsung, and the Onkyo output works fine when connected to my old Panny TH-50PZ80U. Same cables in each config -- seem to have it isolated to an Onkyo-Samsung communication issue. Thanks in advance for any ideas.
