Annoyning new forum feature

What's with this beyond annoying new forum feature that produces this magnifying glass icon when you go to copy a portion of a post?
Copying a sentence in whole, or in part, the whole post copies! I have to go back and delete all but what I wanted which could be as short as a username.

Thanks for noticing the new search feature.
We will have an option to switch it off within a day or two.

Thank you for your patience.

Hi...

What browser are you using? I ask for I just copied just thus from your post... "the whole post copies" and that is all that is in my clip board. I am thinking does not have to do with the this search option. Can you please advise how you are copying the text?

This new thing is just that though...A search option for AVS. It allows someone to highlight a word or words and find more information on AVS about that. (Other posts)

We are however having code written so you can turn off this search feature. TECK above is the programmer. It will soon be an option in your user settings. (Still under going testing.)

Opera.
I tried to duplicate it with my fresh post and it didn't falter. What I did find, after you highlight the text you wanted to copy, that magnifying glass appears and with my OP, I lost the ability to 'copy' that text with the context menu changing to what would be available if I right clicked on a open area of the page.

What brought me here now (I noticed this a couple of days ago) is the problem happening in another sub forum where all I wanted to do was copy the username (outside of the text area) and his whole post copied including signature. Note, only the username was highlighted when I copied it, not the whole post.

There, it just did it.

Ok, it was more than the whole post. The whole page??

I just tried to copy the first few words of the previous post (with just those words highlighted). The magnifying glass appeared and I choose the right click 'copy' function as I have done for 10+ years and pasted it in the quick reply box. I didn't know it was all of that as I deleted all but what I wanted.

Thank Bruce. BTW....Try the context search. It is kind of cool. IMHO.
Bruce, you are somehow moving to highlight the content. Like crossing over the div line of the two tables. I still cannot reproduce the issue at all personally.

It will be interesting to see if you have the issue when you have the option to turn it off.

It now doesn't do it every time. All I do is go to where I want to copy, left click at the beginning (or end) of the portion and drag the cursor, stopping when I have the text selected. Thats' all. Nothing else is highlighted.

I'm not able to duplicate what you're doing Bruce. Copy/Paste works the same as it ever has on all my machines and browsers.

Are you using Opera? If so, which version?
I missed the Opera part. Yep, Opera is funky with it. It works in IE, Fire Fox, Safari & Chrome.

Any update on turning this so called feature off??
Sometimes it does it, others it doesn't. Sorry, but it's not a good idea. If I wanted to copy a whole sentence or phrase, I can do so using the search feature already provided.

Hi...

We just did the upgrade this evening and the option was able to get done. You will find the setting you are looking for in the Edit Options of the UserCP...

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/profi...do=editoptions

Look for the Contextual Search setting in the Thread Display Options area.

In regards to "Sorry, but it's not a good idea." Actually is a really nice idea and I am sorry you are having an issue with it. Opera is not a widely used browser I am sorry to say so it is not tested as much. But hey, you have the option to turn it off. Me, I personally like being able to dig deeper into something with a click.

Attached is the report of the browsers used by AVS members over the last 30 days...

Sorry to say that we found a bug with turning it off. Being looked into and hope to have it resolved sometime Monday.

When I looked yesterday (before I posted this thread) there was no option. Today I see it was added. I unchecked it, but the magnifying glass still appears after I highlight the portion of the post I want to quote, but so far the problem doesn't appear.

Interesting count. I'm surprised Chrome & Safari numbers are so high. I'm also surprised so many are still using the worst POS, bloated, virus prone browser on the planet: Idiot Exploiter.

FWIW, I re-enabled the feature and tried another C&P and it failed.
I then un-checked the feature again (and saved changes each time), but the C&P still failed.

I had forgotten Opera still existed until this thread. I haven't heard of anyone using it in years.

And this is why I mentioned, and you quoted above...

Since it was brought up;

http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp (I question the IE & FF counts, though it would be good news)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usage_s...f_web_browsers (Note the "Mobile browser" count for Opera)
http://www.w3counter.com/globalstats.php (Counts are flawed since they only count a specific version of a browser. Opera 10 was not included)

Firefox is my fav: it works best on Mac OS

I don't ant to get into a 'which is best' discussion, just the fact there is a problem and the fact the site is not tested with Opera (like too many sites).

It would make sense and save time if sites would be tested with something other than IE that is written by idiots who promote sloppy code (anything goes) and FF which seems to be going in the same direction.

FF is nice but there are too many needed, useful features that have to be added that Opera has by default and it does not have a built in e-mail client, which makes it a deal breaker for me.

Bruce, the info above on our users browsers choice came right from our Google Analytics and is real. Sorry that less than 2% of our users use the browser you use. But the fact is, we can not test for every condition for every browser or every version # of browser. We test the top browsers as we can and hope things work as they should.

Even the links you gave above more or less show the same thing in regards to your browser choice I am sorry to say. People choose browsers they like based on need. Opera fits your need...Great!

So you are aware, you are the only one to mention 1) Not liking the contextual search and 2) That it makes for an issue with your browser. I am thinking that if not for #2, you would not have have an issue with #1.

Yet in any case, I have put a programmer on the case to write in additional code so you can turn it off. It is not actually something we had to do mind you but thought it would be nice. This all comes at an expense. We could have just said, sorry. But we tried it and found a bug in the code. It worked in Vb 3.8 (A test area) but not in 3.7 that we are running...so even software versions can and do make for issues.

This is not a browser debate at all. Just more or less found it interesting that most AVS users use FireFox. Opera was more or less low on the list of users for us and also it seems for the lists you provided above. Again though, it is a choice on what you may care to use based on need. But don't be shocked when things may not work on web sites as most sites will test for the top used browsers. Can't make them all work the same as their really is no set hard-fast HTML standard. Thus the rub. Heck...HTML 5 is rolling out...That will be fun for site developers in itself with older browsers.

All in all, we will see if we can get this option working so you can cut and paste with Opera.

Correct.

I'm never shocked, I just try to work around it. if not, I usually don't go back unless there is some compelling reason to do so.
I do appreciate the attempt to correct the problem. I more appreciate the fact you recognize there is a problem. Other sites don't bother. Those I rarely go back to.

Ok, the option in the USERCP under OPTIONS should now work to turn this off if need be.

Take care.
