Wow sory to hear that Dave. My wife is applying but most places require 1 year experience and she just finished her schooling.
my work is closing down December of this year for good as well.

I hope you find something by the time you need it.

Well sorry to hear Steve on your bad luck with the wife's job and yours coming to an end. Dave love your music videos keep them coming. I was on a stay home vacation for the last two weeks but worked everynight anyways. Took wife to Foxwoods casino today for her birthday no luck so far. Took a my 7 month and 2 year old to zoo Monday. Brought the g10 and hx100 ended up using the hx100 only because of the neck strap and always holding one of the boys. I think a Sony hv9 would be smaller and better next time.

Dave makes some really good music videos. When you say G10 do you mean HF G10?

The have so pretty inexpensive gear. I have their DSLR camera cage. Actually came in handy quite a bit when we shot my thesis film earlier this year. Was able to mount the HD monitor and a Zoom recorder to it at the same time(!)

Check it out:

How does this relate to the Canon HF G10/XA10 or other camcorders listed in the thread?
If you want to advertise do it in the advertising section.

The reason I ask is because Canon made the Canon G10. I nearly bought one.
Just what is a Lego looking habby cab?

Steve, sorry to hear about your wife's job, you've had a string of bad luck. This crappy economy doesn't help either. Hopefully you guys will land something.

Dave, hope you get a new show in there quick.

Thanks Ken, I hope it gets better for everyone soon. At least our house is paid off, so we don't have that worry.

Pretty creative and funny, except for the part about 60 year olds with Corvettes kinda ruined it for me.

Just thought I'd post some videos from my Canon G10.
These are the first ones we have done of my wife in our home gym with the Canon.
I really got the feeling watching the raw files that I needed a higher shutter speed. It doesn't look that way on Youtube tho.

The squat pull-ups require that you explode out of the squat and I think that requires a higher shutter speed.

Steve,Ken,Dave everyone: Hope all is well sorry to hear about job situation I was involved in a 3 Billion dollar buyout and me and 12 reps got booted to another Italian based company. In the Biologic sector, same pay but still mostly a start up company here, just hope things bounce back for everyone. I put my Canon ordering on hold, although I did buy some new speakers as music is my first love. I have been using the Sony HX100 with some very good results, so this and my DSLR will do for now. Good luck to everyone!

PS: Steve I don't think I would mess with your wife!

Thanks Garman

My wife is a sweetheart but yeah she's got a body like a steel trap.

Hopefully next year things will pick up. It's an election year so they will be pulling out all the stops to get reelected.

Thanks, guys. Steve, (and everyone...) hang in there.

I think these politicians are clueless Steve. They claim to be hearing the people, but their actions speak differently. I've never been so pessimistic about the future of the country.

Garman, good luck in the new job!

I've got the 'shoot from hell' next week. It's outdoors in Dallas...need I say more?

I agree with that but then again I'm voting for Ron Paul in 2012.
You have to admire a man who says "We in the congress haven't been doing a very good job."

Dallas in the Summer.... Stay cool Ken.

The question: How much downside is there to routinely leaving the Canon WD-H58W wide angle adaptor on the camera??
Here is some comparison footage that sheds a little light on the question:
http://www.vimeo.com/27385310
The white balance is locked down for all of the shots, so the color shift is probably due to the WA lens.
Frame grabs enlarged in Photoshop do show some additional softness due to the adaptor, but not much.
Personally, I am feeling better about just leaving it on when it's convenient.

So is the general consensus these days to go with either the G10 or the XF100 because of the XA10's rattly handle, or to always carry gaffer's tape to put over the offending switches?

The rattle sound never bothered me on 2-xa10's that I had. My last xa10s handle rocker didn't always work correctly. I ended up with the g10 for now but loved the xa10's great cameras. If I had another and it bothered me I would use a double sided velcro wrap to silence them.

I have had zero problems with a "rattly handle.". When I use the handle I always have an external mic in the holder, and it has never picked up any noise at all. A non-issue.

Back after a week with the kids in Disney.
Finally had time to process the raw footage with the Canon XA10.
This one demonstrates the low light and color fidelity of the Canon XA10 with the Disney Fireworks.

cheers

Was that with the on-camera mic?

Hi guys,

Ok, I'm going to shoot a band in a darkly lit bar on the weekend. A really crappy lit stage, and I have no say in having them light it up better.

So, here's the question.

Canon XA10, how do I shoot the scene ? do I shoot in auto mode and hope for the best ? or will shooting in manual enable me to extract more light from the scene, and have a better result ?

I have had my XA10 now for a few months but have not used it much, and still find the manual exposure controls a little overwhelming. If I push gain up, sure I'll get more light, but I'll get more grain.

So, what would you suggest / do in this situation ?

thanks for any help :-)
Do you need to record some entire event or just clips? If it's only highlights, you will have time to test at which gain setting looks best. Any gain settings I found under +18 or so looks clean even in concerts and stages on a 46" HDTV. Once you go auto gain, you'll need to post process with Final Cut or whatever you have. If you need to record an entire event and you cannot pretest the lighting, I'd start at +20 and then dial down for a cleaner image as the show continues. As with most shows, you will have spotlights that will illuminate the faces and eyes. Manual focus on the faces, don't trust AF in low light.

hope this helps

I agree. I never use the AF as at least on mine it is always a bit off.
