So is the local dimming enabled on "High" from the factory or just "Low?" I'm really dumb and anemic to things like hacking into service menus and what not, and I don't really want to spend the money on an expensive Harmony remote to do so.

If the local dimming from the factory is automatically enabled to "high" then this set is a go for me. If it's enabled to "high" there's no need for me to hack into the service menu because "high" is definitely what I want. (I suppose I could probably check out the default settings for the LW5600, because they're probably the same, albeit with the obvious option of turning off/on local dimming).

(BTW, crkpot, thanks for all the time you've taken in helping people out in this thread. You're sort of the official LV5500 expert, lol!)

I'm not sure, after enabling the option in the service menu it was set to Low in Video Options. That may just be the default option and not what the LV5500 is set to from factory. The difference between Low and High isn't very dramatic, not like turning it off and on.

No problem, it's all in good fun for the inner geek.

I'd guess Low...but why limit options? I called one friend fond of el-cheapo gadgets, and she had a compatible RCA remote I can borrow (some sell for all of 6.98 at OffMax & RS). Enter one 5-digit code, then press Guide...

As for crkpot, and many other enthusiasts here at AVS -- they carry on a fine forum tradition I recall as common in BBS's accessed by 300-baud acoustical-modems. Unfortunately, much of that has waned 'these days', and in many of the newer "social-media".

"I'm not 100% on your second question, are you asking what model laptop would stream video to the tv best?? If you plan to use the laptop to playback 1920x1080 video then you'll want a model that does graphics hardware acceleration. Anything with a newer nvidia, ati or intel i-series cpu/chipset will do that. Then you can just connect to the tv with an hdmi cable and be set. If you want to stream the same type of video to the tv over network with Plex then you'll need a cpu strong enough to transcode and I would think a laptop with at least an i5 would be required."

I've simply not kept-up these last many years -- not since 32-bit P4's and AMD Barton's, and an ATI-9800 was SoA.... Must say I'm surprised with what's offered in the sub-600. class of laptop but there's bewildering variety. Thing is, I prefer a smaller lappy, and those never offer full HD-resolution (one would need a mag-glass to read print on such!). I assume that few of these smaller units offer dvi/mini-port Out, but know that svga-to-HDTV is constraining. As for the varied chipsets, I don't know as yet which constitute 'good enough' for acceleration re: video/display limited to 1440-1600, max.
I should read more, elsewhere...

I'm amazed at how good some of the YouTube app stuff looks. One of the SD networks I watch has a YT channel and it looks better than on D*

I'm using Cat5, the wireless dongle was getting 3Mbps on a 12Mbps DSL line. It get 10Mbps wired.

I had a friend bring over a usb hard drive to test the DVR function and sure enough it does work. You have to initialize the drive through the DVR card on the HOME menu and it formats the drive for the tv. Then whatever you watch begins to cache on the drive and allows for full timeshifting.

A new menu system becomes available when you press the ok key. There's a standard dvr type progress bar for rew/ff within a tv show. There are also nice thumbnail screenshots above the bar that show what was on at various times in the progress bar. Buttons below take you to scheduled recordings, a calendar and a Program Guide. PBS and a couple HD channels have program data in the guide but everything else is unavailable info. It gets this program data through the channel broadcast itself from what I can tell and I don't think many channels in the US broadcast that data.

It's a real nice system though, if I could find my camera I would post pics, I'm searching for it. I only expected to get the timeshift feature out of doing all this and that works just fine.

If I plug in an external HD to my tv, since is it on my network will I be able to copy and paste movies from my computer onto the HD and watch them on the TV that way as well?

The only one normal users would be interested in is the EZ Adjust menu which this link shows how to manually add the code needed for a Harmony Remote. Access password is 0413.

Here's what I found most interesting:

Tool Option 2
Local Dim Menu set to 1 to enable Local Dimming Options in the TV Video setup menu
I have no idea why this option is disabled in the first place.

Tool Option 3

DVR Ready Set to 1 to enable Time Machine for dvr like functions on USB
This does enable Time Machine option when you put a usb drive on usb port 1 but my 4Gb stick didn't work. I'm not sure if it's because you have to use a USB Hard drive or this option doesn't work at all on the LV5500. Hopefully someone else can verify, I want this feature!

THX Set to 1 to enable THX video calibration options.
Adds the THX video mode like higher end models have. Not available on DLNA/MediaLink

THX Media Director Set to 1 to enable but not sure what it does.

Tool Option 5
Channel Browser Set to 1 to enable preview thumbnail grid of all channels.
I get thumbnail boxes for all channels but it's unable to load a preview from Cable, so it may not work on US cable. Also noticed when enabled a button with Korean words show up in the menu?

You can also enable 3D options in Tool Option 5 menu but I don't see anything new anywhere. The LW5600 is the same tv but with passive 3d, I don't know if the screen is different and/or it has a seperate processor for 3D but these options probably do nothing for LV5500.

There's also an option for CNET TV but enabling it I didn't see any new CNET features anywhere.

Also beware as everyone always says, there are settings that can brick your TV if you change the wrong thing, so be carefull. From what I could tell the EZ Adjust Menu is pretty safe but I didn't change the things I didn't know what they were.

What model of Harmony remote are you using. I have an old Harmony 659 and I tried to add the code per instructions in your link (add code manually) but I get a "Conversion Failed" error message. Either I copied the line of code incorrectly or my Harmony does not support this feature. Thanks.

I have the 700. It should work the same for you on the website I would think. Make sure you choose Pronto code and when you paste it in the box there's no extra spaces like line wraps.

If I understand you right, you want to plug in a hard drive to your tv and see it from your pc? No you can't do that. But you can plug in a hard drive to your pc and share it across the network to your tv.

Cool. I got it to work. I was adding the data string in the wrong field. Duh! I went into the Service Menu, selected Tools 2, changed Local Dim Menu from 0 to 1, and then exited. When I go to Picture Settings Menu I see Local Dimming but it's grayed out and set to off. Can't select it to change options. Am I missing something here? Thanks.

Try Tool Option 4 and change Local Dimming to 1 also. Mine was already set to 1 (I'm almost positive) but if it's set to 0 you don't get the option.

Local Dimming was already set to 1 in Tools 4. Like I said earlier, after I set Local Dimming to 1 in Tools 2, the option did appear in Picture Settings. But, it's still grayed out and set to Off. Just to be clear we are talking about the Service Menu for the 55LV5500, right? I don't want to beat this to death but I would like to get it to work and experiment with the various settings. Ciao for now. And thanks for you help.

I have noticed a lot of talk about LG's issues playing files with DTS audio. Do these issues arise even when you use PLEX?

I had an issue with trying to play an Avatar Extended Edition BluRay file on my computer I had, the audio was choppy.

I have a 42LV5500-UA but it should be the same. Did you try different video settings like Cinema or ISF, different inputs? LED-Local Dimming is even available in the Q.Menu while using Media Link and DLNA. Bigger question is did you notice the tv using Local Dimming under normal use? Like on all black screens with a small logo or something in the picture you should notice how dark the dark parts are and how the logo will have a unnatural glow around it?

It's all good now. Local Dimming option is available on all inputs (with a video signal, not so much with no video source) and in all pictures modes. I was fiddling with this at 1:00 AM last night, tired, and not thinking clearly (euphemism for brain malfunction). I only had the TV on and nothing else. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

To answer your other question, no, I've never seen the faint glow you described. I watched a Blu-Ray movie last night (before I added the Local Dimming option). All black background with an all white logo in the center of the screen. The logo had sharp, crisp edges and no glow whatsoever. Same with an HBO movie in Hi-Def on the satellite box. I looked at the same Blu-Ray movie a few minutes ago with Local Dimming set to medium and no glow. That could be because my room is well-lit and I'm just not seeing it and/or because I set Expert 1 to calibration settings in an earlier post. I'll check it again tonight in a dark room on low, medium, and high. It seems that my set didn't/doesn't display the same characteristics as others have mentioned. That's a good thing.

I'm a happy camper now. Thanks for your patience and your help. I really appreciate it.

Oh good, you had me worried that my model was somehow different then current models, perhaps because I bought mine in the first weeks it came out . Play around and share your findings, it's good to know someone else has gotten this to work now also.

I have a good 32LV5500-ZC, it would be possible to disable the local dimming?

If you have a Local Dimming option on the Picture menu, you can turn Local Dimming off for any picture mode. The choices are Off, Low, Medium, and High. Chances are, however, that you don't have the Local Dimming option. If that's the case, see crkpot's post #170 on page 6 for instructions on how to add Local Dimming option to the Video options menu. Then you can set it to off.

Note: You do need to have a compatible remote to get into the TV Service Menu to be able to add the Local Dimming option. Click on the blue "link" in his post for specific instructions and a list of remotes that can be used. I happened to have an old Harmony 659 and it worked like a charm on my 55LV5500. You can also use a number of URC model remotes. I'm guessing that if you have the right remote, you can do this with your 32LV5500 as well.

Good luck.

Ver.04.00.14 is now available as of today as well as Hulu Plus! Does anyone know any other changes made here?

A few question: I can't seem to get my LG Remote app on Droid to work with my LV5400? My TV detects it but I only get the dots. Is there a wireless keyboard coming out soon?

Mesirtoo, can you please explain what type (brand/ model) el cheapo remote that you used, and what steps to follow for somebody. do i need to pair the TV with th remote first and then enter 5digit code? how do you get to the EZ adjust menu? please explain in details if possible. Very interested in trying the DVR function listed by Crkpot.

Crkpot, can you please explain what type of USB drive used (was it powered or not, what size that worked for you?

Thanks

so I figured it out how to get to EZ adjust menu using a remote that I just purchased RCA RCR312WR (available at most retailer).

All is set, waiting to figure out what type of usb drive to use.

I'm using a powered 300gb usb hard drive to test with. I read that the minimum requirement is 40Gb so that makes the options a little more tough.

Can you explain the DVR card that shows up in the home screen after you enabled the DVR function. I don't see it (home then setup, I don't see dvr function, nor in the input list) Although i still have not connected the usb drive.
Do you think a non powered usb drive will work?

Thanks

I just upgraded to the latest firmware and was playing around with Hulu+. It's still not all that great with all the commercials. I'm curious if that's the way it always is or if I'm getting commercials because it's sample version. I will say the HD version does look pretty good.

I logged on here tonight to see if anyone else knows anything about the newest version and the rest of the changes made.
Hulu+ question: Is it just the ABC shows, or do all the network shows display the local affiliate "bug"? I also noticed one of the commercials was a local law firm. Nice HD, 2.0 sound only?

I'm pretty sure a usb powered drive would work fine. I use a usb port on my LG plasma to run 2 120mm cooling fans .
