Just saw that Jefe21 mentioned Cell Light at 0 for the first 20 hours. I think I'll probably run the Disney WoW for the first 100 just to break it in even though I'm sure it doesn't need it with all settings below 50.

Can't hurt!

Damn that seems close for a 51. I sit at 7ft for my 43" and can see dithering. I dont know if my set is bad cause its also looking like its changing contrast or brightness on its own even though I have the echo sensor off. In some movies I have watched it will just all the sudden make the blacks in the scene lighter. Anyone else see this on your set?

yea I was at 8.5' which looked great for my 51" but settled on about 9.5' and it is perfect... no hint of dots and crystal clear (dark room)

that's from screen to the back of where my head rests

i hooked up my PN51D450 to my desktop htpc with an nvidia gt220 videocard via hdmi. i watch movies using this desktop.

my problem is the only available modes that i have on the tv is standard and entertainment. is this normal? i wanna use the movie mode and try out the settings posted on this forum. thanks!
I was using 2D to 3D mode and I noticed that the left and right sides of the screen a part of the screen doesn't get used. Whats with that?

I am a new owner of a 51D450 today after reading these forums for a week or so. $639 at BB. I only have a few HD channels available until I get a HD box from comcast tomorrow but they do look good. I am having problems getting my sound settings to work correctly. Not using hdmi cables yet so that might be most of my issues. I'll ask you guys some q's tomorrow if I can't get them solved.

You can only get movie mode if you feed the tv 720p or 1080p. 1366*768 (native) only works in standard. Unfortunately, the colors are a little of in that resolution and without a colorimeterer it is tough to get it right. Your best choice would therefore be 1080p or 720p depending on what content you usually watch.

Hi,
I'm thinking of buying the 43d450 or 43d490.

1. I wanted to know does anyone see any floating blacks or fluctuating brightness on these sets?

2. Also, is there a difference in 2d picture quality between these two?

Thanks in advance.

Glad this thread was able to help you out. Its crazy, I created this thread after getting my TV a couple days before it was even supposed to go on sale, and now its been viewed nearly 35,000 times! I love the fact we can all come together (US, Europe, etc) to share our experiences and help each other out.

What sound issues are you having? Once you get your cable box and HDMI, let us know whats up!

That's good to hear. The reason I asked about the floating blacks was, I read that the higher end Samsung models have them. Thanks.

Sorry if I'm boring everyone but yes, I have this on my D450 and my 2nd D550 51" (the first did the same). Seems common and no change of any setting will eradicate this. I wouldn't bother returning it either, another will exhibit the same behaviour.

I'd not bother breaking in these units, I think plasma tech has come a long way from what used to be a few years ago. I've not bothered and have only tiny IR after extended periods and nothing you notice after playing content again. It's been a non-issue altogether.

Thanks for the welcome folks. It looks like my sound problem was with the digital inputs
into my Marantz receiver. I had to change one of them. I was shocked at how much difference there is between SD and HD. Looks like I'll retire my 27" Panasonic Tau set.
I'm still looking for the images to jump out like the LED sets I was looking at buying but I know it's not going to happen with a 720p set. Foer the price and picture I have I'll live with it. I can always get tweaking tips from you folks here.

you have 2 ways to hook it up to your tv. depending on the videocard of your desktop. via vga or hdmi. if your videocard has hdmi such as mine which is the nvidia gt220, it will be better because its gonna be sending digital signals to your tv. vga is analog. set the videocard resolution to 1920x1080 or 1280x720.

which will render better picture quality when watching sd/720p/1080p movies from my desktop?

1. desktop resolution = 1920x1080 -> tv display = 1080i@60hz

or

2. desktop resolution = 1280x720 -> tv display = 720p@60hz

thanks again..

Looks like I'm one of the only ones with a little red and green tint on white screens.

I'll be returning it. Think I'm gonna buy the 51" version, I just saw it at Best Buy in Canada. Didn't see it before! $679 on sale, great price.

Are you referring to the Dithering or contrast/brightness changing on its own?
Does anyone know if the PN43D490 has Cinema Smooth?
Does the 51" actually have the fluctuating blacks?

My 43" one has none of that, and it will be pretty disappointing to get the 51" next and have that effect.

Are you talking about the contrast/brightness changing in some scenes during a movie or show, when the blacks get lighter?

So are your setting above 50 and viewing letterbox programs?

Changing in some scenes during movie or show.

That sounds awful to me, and I don't want it. My 43D450 doesn't have it, so if I go through all the trouble to return and get the 51D450, I hope I don't get any problems with it... (have to use friend's car as mine's too small and go very far out of my way to best buy)

Well i have the 43D490 and in some scenes in avatar, I Love You Man and during White Collar the other night I can see it happen. Its not a real big lightning up of the blacks in the scene but its noticeable. I have tested to make sure its not something during the scene of the movie or show by watching it on my Panasonic LCD in the family room.

I really hope this doesn't happen for me.

I have the worst luck with TVs. Most people were okay with their 43D450, but mine had to have some odd red blotches all over the screen (albeit hard to see, but still very annoying when you could see it).

I really hope my 51D450 will be okay. I don't want any odd things like fluctuating blacks happening lol. Please just let me have a good TV once!

I'll report back tomorrow to tell how my luck struck me this time.

I'm the same way when it comes to purchasing TVs. I have returned/exchanged far to many TVs. I'm getting a new one sent out to me now and hopefully its good.

Andrelyn: I am quite confident that the floating blacks are the same with your 43 as the 51 set. The thing is that it is subtle enough that you are unlikely to notice it.

The black level seem to have (at least) three levels:

Entire black screen the whole set goes to off mode
Dim - average screen and it has it deepest black while showing any content
Very bright screen and the black level rises.

The thing is that when the screen is that bright we will most likely perceive the black level to be the same, meaning that the rise in black level is difficult to spot.
