Well just ordered a 43D450 for my new bedroom tv. First time jumping into plasma. I own a 55" Vizio 553xvt full array backlighting in the living room. Tv has an amazing picture but the blooming is pretty rough on off angle. So I'm hoping this tv will give me an idea on what, even at entry level, to expect with a plasma. It will just have an HD Directv receiver hooked up to it and nothing else. What always kept me from buying a plasma when I bought the 553 was all the image retention talk, some say bad, some say good, so I guess I'll find out for myself. If all goes well maybe in 5 or so years I'll switch out the 553 with a plasma, but by then who knows what technology tv's will have.

I have no doubt that you will be very pleasantly surprised garnettrules (he does indeed! ). When properly calibrated, this TV gives a stunning picture, and I am picky. Watched True Grit (Blu-ray) yesterday, and I was (again) amazed at the color reproduction, the cinema-like picture and the black level attained by this plasma set. No fancy features (although the playback of videos, SD or HD, via HDD is a relly nice feature which works perfectly) but the essential is here: a stunning image. Samsung really went the extra mile with this new "+1" plasma gen. Kudos to them!

D450 and D490 have the same black levels ?

Does the 2D to 3D conversion work with old VHS tapes and DVD ? Thanks

I finally got around to taking some pictures, as some have requested! These pics come from the PS51d450 (European version of the PN51d450) with Grimmy's nice settings, they were taken in a dark room with a very average camera. Even though I tried to stay as still as possible (no flash of course), some detail was lost along the way, as the image looks a lot sharper in reality. I'm still pleased with the results as it gives an idea of the black levels attained, and the fidelity of color reproduction, although the pics render the picture darker than it really is. Anyway, enjoy!

I also love the 2.35 ratio, even though the picture doesn't fill the 16/9 screen, the cinematic experience, on a large tv or projector, is awesome. Some movies are better suited to 1.85 or 1.77, but the 2.35 ratio still retains its panoramic appeal!

You're welcome! True, the blacks on this set are really, REALLY good. I hate when the 2.35 ratio is ruined by greyish bars, like on my previous 5yrs old plasma screen. On this set, while the blacks are not completely "bezel" blacks, they're pretty damn close!

Hope it might convert some non-believers that these sets are the real deal!

yes , i have an LG plasma and wanted a Panasonic HD Ready, but this year
with the 1366X768 , the 3D and good black levels Samsung seems to win the race

Does anyone know if black on the 51 inch is deeper than on the 43 inch? This set seems to perform much better in a dark room.

Can anyone confirm the new firmware for the 43D450 is safe ?
I'm going to pick up my new Sammy today & want to know before I mess with updating it ... know in the past Samsung had problems with firmware on the C450 models that ended up bricking alot of peoples TV's

When I play CoD Black Ops everything is smooth when I pan to aim, but in every other game I have played I get juddering. Also has happend in movies and tv shows iv watched.

Does anyone else experience this?

I have game mode on and CoD Black Ops is smooth but Dirt 3, BFBC 2 have juddering and on ps3 KZ3 judders. Also was watching Battle LA BluRay on PS3 and saw judder.

Seems to judder in games that dont run a solid frame rate 60 and above like on the CoD engine.

Don't get too excited there, the cameras are showing false black levels :P

I took a few pictures of my screen as well, the camera focuses on the light, so the blacks look completely black in contrast to the picture.

They aren't nearly as black as shown in the picture. But still pretty damn good.

Settings:
Cell:15
Contrast:100
Brightness:33
Sharpness:0
Color:50
Tint:50/50

Advanced picture
Black tone: dark
Dynamic contrast: light

Picture options
pic temp: warm 2
Hdmi black level: low

Andrelyn: ok, let's just hope that this issue goes away with some mileage. IR is worst in the first 100 hours or so.

@ Gatsou, What picture settings are you using? Your pictures look great. Just received my PN43D490 today. Got it on Amazon for $599 shipped to the door with 2 free pairs of 3D glasses. Replacing a PN42B450. Not really replacing, probably gonna mount them on the same wall for gaming and sports.

Grimmy84's settings are a very good place to start, page 9 of this thread .
@ Andrelyn: you're right, the pictures blend the 2.35 bars, the bezel and the darkness of the room together. Of course, it's not quite like that in reality, but this set reproduces very, very good black levels and contrast, and I'm sure a potential buyer looking for this particular quality won't be disappointed.

I read the entire thread and after seeing the pics of calibrated tvs, I am really in a mood to buy this tv (43 inch asian model PS43D450). Can the same calibration settings (with a little adjustments) be used on the 43 inch screen as well? (as 43'' has a resolution of 1024x768 where as 51'' has a resolution of 1366x768).

Does anyone see a kind of ripple effect/look when theres judder?

Im seeing this in some scenes with judder.

Edit: so after going through a load of settinga it turns if I turn on 3d mode the ripple judder effect goes away. I think Samsung should put a new firmware out to fix this. I wonder if the none 3d sets do this or not.

I'm pretty much set on this tv (the 51" version) if i go plasma. It was a pretty intense debate between this and the comparable panasonic 50" X3. But, the looks and extra inch of the Samsung pretty much won out.

My question however, is how bad is the glare off the screen? This will be going in a living room with a few windows.

Everything else about this tv is perfect. The size (46" too small, 55" too big), the resolution (why pay for 1080p?), the brand (been loyal to samsung for a while), the looks, the price, everything. But, I'm concerned that all that won't matter if we have to look at the pitcure through constant glare. Can anyone provide some insight to this?

I went from the 43" to the 51" and am pretty specific in my TV image quality. I notice no degrading between the two.

I can see lines faintly if I'm like 2 feet away that's it. But who wants to sit that close?

Otherwise this has even better PQ than the 43" model imo. Same settings used by Grimmy.

I thought I got a good deal on my d490 when I bought it on sale and got two sets of glasses a few weeks back. Now I feel I got a fantastic deal as samsung is sending me two more sets of glasses free and bb lowered the price on the tv. So since I was still in the 30 day grace period they honored the price and gave me 100 back. This is a great budget tv that you can't beat for the price. I've played, movies, sports, and ps3 games with no sign of IR. The next thing i need to do is run Disney wow to calibrate it.

...Sandwich....I was concerned about the glare with the 51' since my den has large windows opposite the tv wall. I mounted it to the wall with a tilting Sanus bracket and glare is no issue at all. The set is amazing. I toiled over 3 LED sets but kept coming back to look at this plasma. There are some extra bells and whistles it lacks from the higher priced models but for the price and picture it is a winner in my book.
