Yes - another "can I work a projector in this room?" threads!

Hey all, I've been wanting a projector since I can remember and now with a nice tax return coming in I got the A-OK to start shopping/developing how it'll work. I'm hoping to keep the total budget around $1,800, max $2,000.

Currently I have a 61" LED DLP that I would like to keep for my wife's TV watching and for any stuff that doesn't "deserve" the projector. As you can tell from my layout, my speakers and components are all in front of me and I'd like to leave them that way to be honest.

My idea is to get some sort of screen (not sure if pull down or electric pull down would be the best) and I think 120" would be awesome. http://myhometheater.homestead.com/v...alculator.html Says I should only do ~100", but I'd mostly be watching BluRay sources or HD videogames. I'm assuming the screen would need to allow sound to go through it. Are there sound transparent screens like this in a budget price range?

I'm looking at the Epson 8350 since it's pretty cheap and the flexibility will allow it to be placed in a lot of places. I circled either a mounting area or a corner where we might get a cabinet that we could put it on top of if need be to do it from the side. I'd almost prefer a table to put it on since I don't want to go through the hassle of getting the video/power cables through the ceiling. Plus it has scores of good reviews, and I'll just hope for no blob issues I guess.

Also I do have all heavy blackout curtains as well as tinted windows so I can get it pretty darn dark in my living room so I'm not too worried about light control.

I currently have all of my components routing through my receiver to 1 HDMI cable into the TV, I will get a 1 to 2 splitter to have one cable still go to my TV and 1 HDMI cable that'll go to the projector.

Will this work in my room size/layout or am I just dreaming?

Let me know if this isn't the correct forum to post this in, it's kinda a mixture of this and room setup I guess?

Finding a 120" budget AT screen will be very hard to do. Here is a company that makes good AT screens at a reasonable price point. http://www.seymourav.com/screens.asp You are still looking at 2k for a retractable tab tensioned AT screen. Also you can't place the projector in the corner and even if you could, you shouldn't.

Thanks for the response, as you can tell I'm a giant newbie at this.

The cheapest "AT" (audio transparent I'm assuming) screen I could find is: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000N28H82/?tag=e--20 which I'm sure isn't amazing quality, but I'm not sure where I could store the screen when it's not in use, so I guess it's not really feasible.

I'm assuming increasing the receiver settings to higher on the left and right (and center if it blocks it) isn't a realistic option either...

A-ha, I did not realize that placing a projector in a corner would not work, I thought some of the horizontal shift option (25%) would allow for that, but I guess not. I'd probably end up putting it on a shelf instead of ceiling mounted for the time being.

Is the 120" too big of a size for my viewing distance room size and something like 106" be a better idea? I'm always in the "bigger is better" camp, but if my sources won't support it at the viewing distance then I know I'll probably not be too happy.

With your 10'-6" to 11' viewing distance, I would go with a 106" or 110"" screen. That 25% horizontal lens shift means that the projector can be placed 25% of the screen width from center. In other words if your screen was 100" wide then the projector could be up to 25" to the right or left of center. If any vertical lens shift is used and it would be, then you have less horizontal lens shift.

You can fit a projector in nearly any room, but you may have to get pretty creative. I have a dedicated room and a family room set up. The family room is probably one of the worst rooms ever for a projector. My family room is not light controlled and has huge (over 12' high) windows. One of those windows is on the back wall where the projector would have to go if shelf mounted. Ceiling mount was also out of the question since the ceiling is 17'. I ended up making an adjustable height pedestal for placing the projector on.

Projector lowered. [url="http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff112/mjg100photo/Downstairs%20room/IMG_2845.jpg"]http://s243.photobucket.com/albums/f...t=IMG_2845.jpg

Projector in raised position. Raised positions are adjustable. http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/f...m/IMG_2843.jpg

OPer is wanting to use the screen in front of his TV, so he pretty much has to have a retractable screen and a 120" retractable AT screen is going to be a tab tensioned screen and those cost some money. I made my own AT screen with mechanical masking system myself. I also used the Center Stage XD material. Love my screen.

Maybe I can just move my towers from inside the columns to the other side of the columns? Not sure it that'll float with my wife... or I even craigslist them and get smaller ones to put on the floor and aim them up? As you can see, I'm willing to bend to make this work!

Here's kinda an off-topic question: Since Best Buy has no more restocking fees and 14 day returns on projectors... can I "rent" one out to give it a shot? They have 8350s and just gotta see if they have a decent screen to give this a go...
