I currently have my blu-ray, Xbox, and cable all hooked into a receiver with one hdmi to the tv. Since I don't switch inputs for the components I did not have to calibrate several inputs. My question is when watching 3d it seems to not pop out of the screen as much as it looks like its in the screen if that makes sense. Are there settings I can change to enhance the pop out effect? Is there a setting anyone is using to also brighten the screen a bit to compensate for the darker image. Putting it in dynamic helped a little for me it seemed.

Have you tried changing the 3D depth and 3D perspective settings? Also as far as the darkness Ive gotten use to it, but since the glasses are so dark you may just want to raise your brightness for 3D, then put it back after.

I came from a Samsung 46" LED and decided to get into the plasma game. I bought the 59D550 about 3 weeks ago. Before buying I did a lot of research and read through this thread quite a bit. I was aware of the "buzzing" and brightness pops that affect this model TV, but decided to give it a try. I mean for the size and price, why not?! Anyway, love the TV, but I have both the buzzing AND the brightness pops. I love everything about the TV except for those two things.

My question is this: I have about a week left to return this TV, but is it worth the effort to exchange it for the same model and just hope the new one doesn't buzz? Should I be looking for a different TV? I can live with the brightness pops, but the buzzing bothers me a little bit. Has anyone had any luck exchanging for a new TV, or is it just something you have to live with with the D550?

Thanks guys. I really love the picture quality and the 3D and everything really... it just makes me wonder if those two minor annoyances are the just something I'm gonna have to live with in order to keep enjoying it. I can definitely see the picture quality difference from my LED TV, even though the brightness isn't quite up there.

51D550 owner and I also have the brightness pops, display was manufactured in November and came with firmware 1019.

After lurking on all of the threads regarding the 2011 D series I decided to try the Samsung live chat and see if I could get the firmware that folks have been getting mailed to them to fix the brightness pops.

After a hour on the live chat the Samsung CSR informed me that they would send me out firmware 1019.5 to fix the brightness pops.

I will post my results once it arrives in the next 4-15 days.

an: Hi, thanks for reaching out to Samsung tech support. How can I help you today?

Brandon: have a PN59D550 Plasma TV I purchased last April. It is registered on your site. I (like many others) are experiencing brightness fluctuation/pops while viewing. All ECO settings are off. I understand from others that a firmware update has been made to fix this for the PN64D8000 specifically. I am on version 1019 which most recent on my tv I heard of 1019.5 that fixes my issue

Brandon: not april but November. my apologies

Ryan: Please allow me to go through the inquiry.

Ryan: Thank you for holding.

Ryan: I understand your concern that you are having TV brightness fluctuation on your TV. Is that correct?

Brandon: yes

Ryan: Thank you for confirming.

Ryan: Do you have the same issue when you connect any other input sources like DVD player, VCR, Satellite, Cable box, Xbox, PS3, etc to your TV?

Brandon: The issues are bad with blu rays, Video gaming. Sometimes with Cable TV but to a lesser degree

Ryan: Would you mind holding a few minutes while I gather the required information for your request?

Brandon: okay

Ryan: Thank you.

Ryan: Thank you for holding.

Ryan: Could you please update the firmware of the TV and check whether the issue persist?

Brandon: my firmware is 1019

Ryan: Thank you for the information.

Ryan: Just for information, Have you reset your TV to factory default?

Brandon: no

Ryan: Please try to reset your TV to factory default and check whether the issue persist?

Brandon: that wont fix the issue. Many have done that etc. Ive read many reports that a firmware 1019.5 fixes the issue from your live support. This issue has been rampant in these TV's and finally samsung has claimed this firmware fixes the issue. on the d8000 supposedly 1024.8 fixes it as well. Id like to recieve firmware 1019.5 if I can please

Ryan: Just for information, do you have any option to update the firmware over the network on your TV?

Brandon: I think it has to be USB, the PN59D550 doesnt have internet right?

Brandon: no Wifi etc

Ryan: I'm sorry, 1019.5 firmware only available for over the network update. However, I suggest you to contact our phone support to get the details on your TV firmware version update.

Ryan: Please contact our Samsung Customer Care department for multi lingual support at 1-800-SAMSUNG/1-800-726-7864, Mon - Fri: 9:00 A.M. - 9:00 P.M. (EST), and 9:00 A.M. - 7:00 P.M. (EST) on Saturday & Sunday.

Ryan: Are you able to contact the phone support number?

Brandon: Ive read chats about people being mailed a USB with 1019.5.

Brandon: Addison: This is your Transaction ID: xxxxxxxxxxx. You will receive the USB Flash Disk with firmware version in 5-14 business days plus shipping time. Phil Hamilton: Thank you. What version is being shipped to me and can you please confirm that it is designed to fix the brightness pops issue? Addison: You will receive version 1019 which will diagnose the issue. Addison: You will receive version 1019.5 which will diagnose the issue.

Brandon: the chat person asked for this persons address ETC and mailed a USB of 1019.5

Brandon: I dont mean to sound rude and I thank you for working with me

Ryan: I'm sorry for the delay. I'll be right with you.

Brandon: I just think for samsung getting these firmwares out will show great support and PR for your 2012 models. Alot of people have and are scared of these brightness fluctuations and pops

Brandon: I love this TV and Samsung as well

Ryan: I am sorry, I couldn’t help you fix the issue over the chat. Is there anything else I might be able to assist you with?

Same issue here with all the eco crap turned off! Ruins the relatively good blacks on the set. I also have the darks jump in brightness in darker scenes (I was watching Crazy, Stupid Love and the scenes in the bar were noticably washed out like crappier LCDs do). I think this might be a symptom of brightness pops.

Can I also calibrate my Plasma TV using the same calibration tool as I use with my LCD (I would imagine I can but just wanted to make sure if there is anything different between the two).

Hi,

I bought the 51" D550 a few weeks ago and the glare has been pretty bad. My wife and I have to shut all the shutters to watch TV during the day. I bought the set on boxing day for the low price of 699.00, which I thought was a good deal. I am now willing to upgrade to the 51" D8000 for 1999.00 if it helps with the glare. For 699.00 I guess I could live with the glare issue. Does anyone have any opinion as to what I should do?

Thanks

Paul
i dont think its worth it to upgrade bro unless you got cash to throw. or if the glare is just too much but rememebr even with d8000 theres some glare. Maybe re position your TV
post #1394 of 1918
I picked up a PN51D550C1 this weekend. So far I am not having any of the issues I have read about here, especially the buzz. NO buzz whatsoever. Dead silent.
Out of the box it looked OK but I tried some settings others have posted and it looks even better.
This is my first plasma and I am blown away by the picture quality. Even the 2D->3D feature looks pretty good.
I love the 3050GB glasses. Light and comfortable, and thats over my everyday glasses.

Granted I am upgrading from a 37" Hannspree XV(720p) LCD that is 6 years old but I had that tweaked really well and it looked great.
I am looking forward to tweaking this panel once it is burned in a bit.
OH! The sound quality! WOW. I left it on standard and just turned up the low frequencies in the EQ and use the SRS. I think it sounds great for when I don't want the big system on.

Lastly, the network capabilities are great.
I watch a lot of videos that are stored on my desktop and I used to use an old PC run into the PC input @ 1368x720 and it looked pretty good. This panel makes those videos look fantastic and not having another PC running is even better.

I tried installing the 1018.1 firmware from the website but apparently it came with 2011_08_03-1018 so it wouldnt take.

I was originally hesitant to get this or any reflective screen like this, as my screen is in the corner facing southwest and we have 2 south facing windows. I went to a few stores to see it first. Yes, it is reflective, more so than my LCD, but completely tolerable, as we have vertical shades that black out very well.

Looking forward to hooking up the 3D samsung blu ray player I picked up with it and really seeing this bad boy shine.

Just a little update... After three weeks with my first 59d550, I decided to take it back to Best Buy and exchange it for another one. I looked into other models and such, but in the end decided to give it another go with the d550. My main reason for returning my set was because it was a pretty loud buzzer. They took it back no problem.

After getting home with the new set, it turns out that it also buzzes, albeit noticably less than my first one. An interesting thing though, my first set came with Firmware 1019, while this one came with 1018. I have noticed the brightness pops on the new set, so I'm just waiting for someone to receive the 1019.5 firmware and to share it with the rest of us

Really can't beat this TV as far as value is concerned! I love the PQ on this set. On a side note, I finally bought a 3D blu-ray player and watched our only 3D movie, Cars 2. I was definitely impressed!

I have read many messages here about problems with the PNxxD550 series. This could be discouraging for those who are considering buying one of these televisions. My experience has been very different and positive. I thought it could be helpful to post my experiences to offset some of the comments of others who have been less fortunate.

We recently bought a PN51D550 at Visions, a Canadian retailer, for $697. I have had no brightness pops and no humming. This is my first Samsung and my first plasma screen. (Our other TVs are Sony LCDs, the highest being a KDL60NX720.) A friend recently bought the PN59D550.

I tried the 10 point calibration hack, but I didn't see significant difference between that and the standard picture preferences setup based on recommendations in this thread.

I am comfortable recommending this television based on my limited experience.

What firmware do you have on your 51d500? I bought mine at Best Buy, it's arriving on Friday, and I'm deathly afraid I'll have both buzzing and brightness pops, so it's really refreshing to see a positive comment here.

How's the glare?
My PN51D550 was also purchased in Canada at future shop and I updated to firmware 1018. I have had no brightness pops since the update and never any buzzing and I've had it for about 6 months. I am still amazed at the picture. Hockey looks so awesome and so does anything hd.
Mine came with firmware 1018. We don't have any glare problems, but this TV is in a bedroom and it is usually pretty dark when we watch it. The window is at right angles to the screen, about two meters away, and the blinds are usually closed most of the way.
Just unpacked my PN51D550, came with 1019, haven't had a chance to go look for brightness pops, too busy wondering if my fiance is going to make me return this thing. It's HUGE.

Until she gets home though, enjoying some ESPN in HD

Owners should not have to hope for the "right tech" in order to get the firmware sent out to them...Samsung should just put the firmware up on their support site for download if they don't want to be bothered with putting it on the network. This is ridiculous!
My PN51D550 Canadian version came with 1018 FW and it has black level fluctuations.
Tried the US web site Chat and got rebuffed because I'm from Canada. Will be trying the Canadian Samsung site but they do not have chat so I'll have to phone them.
Anyone have any luck in Canada getting the USB firmware fix?

I was told by "Matt" that they have a dedicated team dealing with the firmware issues. So "josh" basically look at the notes and said ok 1019.5 will fix and will be in the mail. I never had an issue. Maybe I got lucky but I'm sure Samsung knows the word is out about the elusive 1019.5 firmware :-)

I'm looking to buy my boyfriend a new TV for his birthday, and wanted to know if this was a good deal. Any help would be great considering I don't know a thing about TVs. Thanks!

Yeah but for like $90 I'd buy it from a local retailer. I've bought off amazon only to get the tv and not have it turn on....just my opinion

Sure you can. It's just a very big item. I use amazon as well. Often. But I will never order such a large fragile item again.

First of all, I'd like to say thanks everyone who posted on this thread...It's been super helpful !

I've read the last few posts about getting in touch w samsung for the new firmware. Decided to do that same. Just bought this Plasma during the Holiday.
"Austin" was my live chat Agent.

Simply told him the issue I was having, reiterated that resetting to factory default didn't work, and requested him to send me the new firmware via USB.

Within 20 minutes the convo was finished and "Austin" provided me w/ a confirmation #
