Official Samsung 2011 PNxxD550 Thread - Page 50

This thread is less than a year old, telling me that the display is still under warranty. Call Samsung for some service on it.

Hi all,

Updated 1019 to 1019.5 last night and spent a few hours testing for BPs on both Blu ray (sans cinema smooth) and HD channels. Happy to report that everything went well and any questionable moments were so trivial that it isn't worth mentioning. As far as I'm concerned.. problem solved.
Got my 1019.5 firmware on Monday for my 51D550 and been testing since. I have used Direct TV, XBOX360, ps3, and Netflix streaming through the ps3 and have seen NO fbr.

Firmware 1019 to 1019.5 updated shutdown, turned back on optimized shutdown, turned back on issue resolved!

I did notice that the black level changed on my set. All of setting stayed the same but their was some change in the black level. Have changed settings since then to get desired settings and at this time I am satisfied with the results!

Did you manage to get good blacks after the update?
Glad I was able to help some of you out by uploading the firmware. I have tested blu rays, Netflix, streaming from my WD TV, and cable and haven't seen a pop yet after the update.

Yes, I have been using a calibration download that I found in the Indie games section on XBOX live to get my settings.

AS soon as I did the firmware I could tell the difference from before and after. So I checked all my settings including the eco sensors and nothing had been reset or changed from the firmware.

So I went ahead and watched content on DirectTV and games on both the XBOX360 and ps3 and netflix streaming on the ps3 to look for any brightness fluctuation and found none, did not want to change settings from what they where before so I could do a better comparison on the before and after on the firmware.

Once I was satisfied with my firmware findings I looked at the gray scale grid on the calibration download and I could see where the black level had changed. Since then I have been adjusting the settings to my likening and I am satisfied.

Installed the 1019.5 update. Optimized, no issues so far.

I am trying to calibrate the contrast and brightness with the Disney WOW Blu-ray. In basic mode, it seems to be correct. However, has anyone gone through the advanced brightness and contrast correction with the Disney disc? I can't get the ideal white stars and above to disappear as they should. Color / tint / etc. is spot on but but no matter what I do with brightness and contrast, in advanced I can't get it to be where it should. It's like the contrast doesn't go up high enough.

thanx for the firmware upload. I wasn't going to do it until I saw someone reporting better blacks. Mine went through the optimizing process so hopefully everything is good to go.

So the 64D550 should be a better buy than say the 59d6500????at around the same price.
Can this firmware be installed on European D550? Someone, please answer me.
Watched the dark night last night and the black levels indeed looked better to me after applying the D550 1019.5 FW update. I didn't see a single brightness pop either.

I'm gonna test out a few other blu rays to see if I get the same results, especially with the improved blacks. I just want to make sure it wasn't a "mind over matter" issue.
When you guys are saying that you "optimized" after updating, what exactly do you mean?
I thought the black levels were better after fw update....
@1321
The 1019.5 fw update will load the fw, shutdown, turn on and then the OPTIMIZE dialog box will appear. After this the unit will shutdown and then turn on again.
There is nothing to do except enjoy the missing "pops" ....

Yeah the black levels are an important thing, i would like to know if they become affected by the fix.
is this firmware for D550 only or works on a D6500 too?

like I said in another post I watched the dark knight the other night and to me the blacks looked better. I'm gonna watch true grit and no country for old men this weekend as those two movies really are good for testing a monitors black levels.

Another question. For the 3D on this display, how is the cross-talk between eyes? Is the display quick enough to almost eliminate crosstalk, or is it still pretty noticeable? Specifically I'd like to hear from people using 3D on their PS3/360, as I'm not too likely to use 3D in film. Depth in games is rad, poking torches at the screen in film is not.

Ive had no crosstalk in games at all, and 3D in general works great for some games, and not so much for others. I find the 3D in GT5 to be pretty bad, but awsome in Stardust HD and Gears of War 3, as well as Crysis 2.

Hello all, I got PS51D530, european model. I write here because D530 thread is deserted.

Is there any new firmware for D530 that fixes increased black levels in the last official one? For the other models of the D series, there are new firmwares.

Latest fw for the european version is 1007.2 from november. In USA u guys got 1007.0 as the latest firmware, which is from october. Any clue, anyone with D530?

Thanks!

I will try to make this as short as I can, I bought a Samsung PN51D550 a few months ago and noticed a problem from the get go. I will skip all the troubles that I went through with Samsung but my picture looks great as long as there are no people in the picture, all the people look like they are cartoons, the skin tone is all the same. I just wanted to know if anyone else is having the same problem. Samsung sent out a person to fix it but it was doing the same thing. That is a whole other story
I have a play station 3 and HD Direct TV it also does it through them, also over the antenna would love any input on this problem.
Thanks A.
Here is a screen shot:

Were you ever able to get this resolved? My 51D550 operated wonderfully for the first couple of months. No buzzing. No brightness pops.

Then when we turned it on a couple of days ago it was horrible. People looked especially bad. They all looked like they have a rash. In addition, every scene looks like it was shot during a lightning storm. Brightness levels go up and down every one to five seconds. We have a channel that shows only various types of still scenes, like landscapes, cityscapes, still life, etc. Every one of those looks likes there is a lightning storm going on.

The affects every input. We only have a PVR and DVD player hooked up, but I tried it with a USB stick as well. It even is apparent when the Samsung logo shows during startup.

I checked the settings. They are all the same as previously, based on frankthetoad's settings.

I have unplugged everything and plugged back in again. I have reset everything using the Plug and Play in the TV menu and redone the settings. I have installed the 1018.5 firmware.

I'm afraid there is going to be nothing that I can do and that Samsung may have to come out to deal with it. In the meantime, it is unwatchable.

I have a few questions. I noticed that my Out of the box picture is very dark under the standard setting. I have tweaked the setting under the movie mode and the image looks good. I am using the dark standard mode for my break in period. I have been reading about the brightness pop. I have noticed what looks like a flicker during certian scenes.
Getting ready for the super bowl I have been watching a lot of NFL network which always causes temporary image (ticker and logo) retention on my 2010 530 plasma temporary screen. I dont have any retention on my 550 (I dont want any). I am wondering if the 550 has better technology or is my screen not displaying properly?

2010 models had kind of bad retention issues due to new 3D technologies. This year, they are back to how they should be with minimal retention.

Disney WOW is an AMAZING TOOL if you don't wanna shed 200$ for professional calibration...
I can't get it spot on, but pretty close to what it should be...What are you're settings ?

I'm using a PS51D550 purchased in Australia. The firmware I'm on at the moment is 1025.0 from the Samsung website, but it's from October 2011. Does anyone know if the uploaded firmware will be compatible? I'm getting really bad brightness pops trying to play Dark Souls. Thanks.

YoEddy - can you go to this thread and post what logic firmware update is showing on your PN64d550? It would be helpful. Instructions are there to have the display show you. We need confirmation as to what should be there after the UPDATE And OPTIMIZATION step for the 64D550s.

Can you do us a favor and post you Software version of the logic board on this thread so we can compare to see what constitutes a successful upgrade? Some of us - me included - upgraded but did not see an improvement. I am getting two USBs sent to me to downgrade and then re-apply the upgrade to 1019.5 again to see if that works. tks

I would not use this update. Too risky for me. I will wait for something on the Australia Samsung site.

Dave.
