I feel the plasma does take a few hours of use to settle in. I spent the first week messing around with the settings because I was never satisfied. Having had this for 3 weeks now, I am very pleased. I find that it does a great job or truly representing the source material. Shows that are dark appear dark. Its not the tv, its the intended lighting. For example Glee was rather dark last night but other shows in a studio or just in brighter settings are great.
I use the mpeg and digi noise filters on low because Cablevision sucks and many of their channels are choked for bandwidth. The mpeg filter helps smooth the macroblocking for me. I also just like the way the digital noise filter works in low setting. Seems to add that "pop" I like.
I have it in a room that is a little bright during the day so I use a higher cell light but my settings are
cell 20
contr 95
bright 58
sharp 20
Tint: G50/G50
Black Tone Off
Dynamic Contrast Off
Gamma 0
Colour Space Auto
Flesh Tone 0
Edge enhancement Off
Motion lighting Off
Color tone Warm2
Digital Noise Filter LOW
MPEG Noise Filter LOW
HDMI Black level Low
Film mode Off
Size Screen Fit
no color offsets/gains changed
When watching 3D I use the same settings but in Standard mode which brightens up the picture enough to compensate for the glasses.
This is on the 1019 fw.

Now I don't know if this is because the TV isn't as good, or if it's the opposite. That the TV is so much better than my Panasonic and I am now able to see more detail in the HD picture and faults in the picture are more noticeable.
I have calibrated the settings to this...
Picture preset: Movie
Cell light 18
Contrast 90
Brightness: 52
Sharpness: 15
Tint: G50/G50
Black Tone Off

R-Offset 26
G-Offset 24
B-Offset 26
R-Gain 30
G-Gain 20

And I think the picture is as good as it can get. But it just really bugs me that the HD picture while watching TV doesn't look as good.
Any advice?
