Wow - this thread is awesome. Do you toggle between the two settings? I'm somewhere between day and night (not a brightly lit basement, but I rarely shut all the lights off).

Also - ferrite cores? Necessarily? Silly? I hate the way they just flop around there on the power cord (not attached tightly at all) but it's not a big deal to put them on if they are helpful.
I think you were supposed to loop the power cord around them but I don't have them on mine at all.

Cannot tell you if they are necessary, they're meant to filter out high frequency EMI.

If you loop the power cord twice through the ferite as in the instruction it should not be loose.

Odd that everyone recommends using warm 2, to me it is way to warm, I used warm 1 for cable and htps and neutral for 360.
Duh. Looked at the picture more closely and it's clear now.

Says it's supposed to be more than 8" from the end of the cord, but the picture is clearly not to scale :-) - am wondering if it's "no more than 8" and it's a typo?

Don't think I'll bother with using it on my HDMI cable (it's net jacketed, looping it around or folding it is damn near impossible).

Also - haven't installed the stand yet - am I really supposed to lay it down on something flat? Years and years ago I was told never to lay a plasma flat.
They tell you to lay it on a table so that the bottom edge is clear so you can put the stand on....who has a table that big? I did it on the floor but I had to have my wife help hold up the TV so it wasnt resting on the stand while face down.... pretty messed up if you ask me. Not sure why they didn't just put the stand on it to begin with
post #217 of 1897
The pictures make it look like using the box - but the box doesn't seem super stable to me... i guess i could put the styrofoam inside and the bottom as well for stability, temporarily.
That would work too I guess... I'm still a little uneasy knowing all that is holding it up there are those 8 little screws
post #219 of 1897
I laid the TV on the couch while attaching the stand, my gf was holding it from tipping over onto the floor.
Woot - got the stand installed (had a friend stop by) and then lifted up to where it goes (fits like a glove in a custom entertainment/storage system that's just been waiting for a TV this large. Course now I need to hook it up.

Had a little trouble with the stand - one of the screws wouldn't go in, so I switch around the screws (different holes) and it all worked. Annoying. Can't believe this base is holding this TV up.

TV seems to lean a tiny bit to one side - should read directions more closely which says to not fasten the screws until the product is stood up. Oh well. Will fix that later.

What exactly is "film mode" in the picture options under advanced settings? I see options for off, auto1, auto2 and cinema smooth (grayed out) - I'm trying out the daytime settings from sforza above

pretty sure its covered somewhere in this thread or in the 2011 Samsung plasma thread, but in I believe it becomes available when your source is 1080p 24hz.
Anyone else notice a slight "lean" to one side (like 1/8")? I took mine down and re-installed the stand but that appeared to make it worse. It's not major but it's annoying. Not sure why they have such a small base for such a large TV. The way the TV wobbles makes me nervous (my old Plasma couldn't be swiveled, so maybe they're all like this)

Seems like something they'd want to make a little more stable at 59-64"
sorry, bit off topic. i ended up with an extra samsung 2011 3d starter kit. as you probably know, it comes with 2 pairs of bluetooth 3d specs (ssg-3100gb), shrek 1-3 3d version blu-ray, and vouchers (submit online or by mail) for 3d version blu-ray of shrek 4 and megamind. brand new, unopened, and factory sealed. if anyone is interested in purchasing (significantly discounted), send me a pm. i believe it retails around 500 (which seems overpriced). thanks.

So how is the over all picture quality on this set?

Awesome? Well in comparison to my 32" 4 year old Vizio Plasma...awesome.
I'm looking to upgrade my UN46B6000 with this or maybe the PN51D650. I don't care about the extra apps the D650 has but will there be any other diffrence?

Can you see any image retention?
I have seen absolutely zero IR, and I've had the set for a few weeks now. I even leave some PS3 games on pause for a while without thinking about it. Not a problem, as far as I can tell.

The only open issue with this set seems to be the floating blacks.
I just had to come on and say that I just bought this TV yesterday, and so far couldn't be happier. The colors are truly incredible on this TV. I must not have good eyes, or have never experienced a really good TV, because I just can't see how anyone could complain about the blacks or PQ of this set.

Also, I wanted to state that I am not experiencing any of the same problems stated on the board. No buzzing, no floating blacks, no contrast changes. Just a great picture in my opinion.

I am currently running the color slides, even though all I want to do is watch HD feeds on the TV. This TV is impressive, and totally contradicted what I thought. This thing is running cool even though on for 15 hours. My Mitsubishi DLP would have burned the house down already.

I posted my review on BestBuy, Sears, and Amazon to hopefully help others on the fence about this TV. Usually i will read 100 reviews on a product before I buy, but there wasn't anything really out there other than this thread. I am supremely impressed as this is my first Plasma, and really wish I had gotten this over my other LCD's.

I haven't tried a BluRay in 24 fps yet, but will probably try out tonight. I hope it looks better than my LCD's and not as oddly smooth.

I just hope that everything stays this great. I usually have to return about 75% of my large electronics purchases within the first week due to something being wrong. I hope I'm one of the lucky ones.

Also, wanted to say thanks to all at AVS Forum, and Cleveland Plasma. This is my first post, but I have read about 10,000 posts in the past to help with decisions.

Also, no IR on my screen. I got excited and first thing I did with the TV was play PS3. No hint of any HUD's being left on screen. This was before I came to my senses and realized how much it would suck to have burn in on a brand new TV.

Also, not sure what the floating blacks are supposed to look like, but I watched some dark material last night, and was still 10x better than my Sammy LCD, and my Mitsubishi DLP.

Someone in another thread said he used the box. The box for my 64D8000 is pretty strong so when I swap out the set I have now for another one, I will use the box with a few towels covering it. Or I will use the table in the basement with the wife assisting. Two BB guys tried to install the stand by having the stand on the floor and the both were trying to lower the tv to the stand and screw it in. They eventually got it screwed in but broke one of the tabs off the stand and I wasn't keeping it after that so therefore the swap.

Can anyone tell me what the dynamic contrast ratio is on the D550

Absolutely none. There was considerable amount on the Vizio (my wife probably did a horrible job of breaking in as we were not together at the time)

Isnt dynamic contrast ratio pretty much a gimmick anyway, who can tell the difference between 1000000 and 2000000?

Can someone tell me why the 59D550 isn't listed on Samsung's site yet? Seems odd.

None of the 550s are. I tried finding the manual last week and the CSR I talked to said they were too new and they were trying to update the site now. Thought that was odd too considering most companies have stuff on their site BEFORE they're available...

Do you have a 51" or 59"?
