Boxee Box vs New PCH A210 - need advice - Page 3

The "F" is "flash", which means whichever Flash app you might have running (NMJ or some of the supplied apps). The source button thus also works as a multi-tasking button, which allows you go switch between the different things you have running.

List = html (i.e. the original view) and F = Flash.

Basically it is a way to switch between flash and html views (useful if using the YAMJ Flash jukebox but you want to get back into the directory/list view)

Thanks guys for the info! I setup the Flash YAMJ last night, running it side by side with Aeon, and the Flash is so much faster, but it still seems too beta. Aeon looks perfect on my TVs, where the flash version cuts part of the picture off. I think the Flash version once they get it more finalized will become my main jukebox.

Yeah, Eversion is still in public beta mode so it will take some time to really clean up and get it to where it needs to be, but it is definitely a nice stepping stone (especially if you have a PCH and PopBox)

Thanks guys, that was another question I had.

Is there a button that will lead you directly back to the main menu to maybe pull up a list of shares?

Damian, you mentioned Yamj, I've been playing around with that(graphics worked fine but I didn't set it up right and it won't play media... minor detail so gotta redo it), but from what I read, even tho it can display a single wall with all the movies on it, since the PCH is currently limited to one share at a time, it can't play everything on the wall. I was pointed to a thread that showed how to potentially auto mount multiple shares, but not sure I wanna go the Telnet route just yet.

That's the button refered to above. It doesn't open a list of sources when in the movie wall. It only shows 2 options for HTML or Flash so it acts as a view switcher instead.

When you get the option choose the HTML list. This should take you to the directory listings for the share you are in. From there you should also be able to get back to the main screen

The lasts bunch of posts in this thread make me like my Boxee Box even more!

Amazon has done it again...I ordered the Boxee Box on Monday with two days shipping option. I received it on Tuesday, which is barely one day.

I'm coming from Roku XDS, WD Live, RealMate, etc. Boxee Box is exactly what I have been looking for. It worked perfect out of the box. It took about 5 minute of painless setup. I took it out the box and turned it on. After 5 minutes of software updates and rebooted it, everything worked perfect out the box. Netlix, Vudu and all blu-ray files (mkv, m2ts, avi, etc.) playback perfect. This is how HD media should work. I don’t have to waste time decoding blu-ray file to play on Roku XDS anymore. It played all decoded blu-ray files that I threw at it so far. I'm 70% local and 30% streaming, and Boxee Box is great for both worlds. To me, it is worth it to invest $90 extra for the Boxee Box. If Roku can smooth out their Roku XDS USB playback, it can be a good player for both worlds too.

Since the HD media thing hit the market, I have owned many HD media players. I haven't found anything that is good for both worlds until I bought the Boxee Box. I thought that Roku XDS was my solution, but the .mkv file playback was dreadful. I haven't encountered any problem with Boxee Box on my 56" HDTV and the 5.1 Audyssey with front high speaker system. It’s playback flawless so far. I'm sure that as I put more uses on it I'll encounter hiccups along the way. The way I look at it, there isn't any HD media player without hiccup. As for the fan noise comment by some owners, I haven't notice it on my Boxee Box. It isn't any louder than my previous HD media players. If fan noise is your main concern, A/V receiver, Amp, PS3, etc are noisier than a very tiny Boxee Box.

Oh, I got a free Vudu HDX movie from Boxee Box too. HDX is the highest quality of internet streaming. It is time to dim the light and enjoy the show.

Agreed. The A200 has made me appreciate the convenience and simplicity Boxee offers. I'd love to put another Boxee on this TV, but alas, it's only got a DVI connection with no EDID, so Boxee won't sync properly.

You'll need one of this: HDMI to DVI

No. That wouldn't do. Getting connected is easy, the problem is EDID. Most of the DVI devices do not send EDID info that is required by Boxee Box. Had Boxee defaulted to 480P instead of 1080P it could then be manully set to 1080i or 720P as needed. But as is it is not usable for older 1080i/720P TV that do not send EDID info.

How about this- Dvi To HDmi .

You can't just hook it up to a display and set the lower resolution? I know this is what I do for the one I take to my girlfriends. I leave it set on 720p, otherwise if I put it on 1080P for the bedroom set I use at home, when I connect it to my girlfriends lower resolution set I won't get a picture.

I have had a boxee box for a couple of weeks now, so far im pleased, it isnt perfect, but it plays everything ive tried and the amount of online content is ridiculous. I have had it lock up a couple times but that isnt a big deal to me, it sits right under my tv and i havent heard the fan. Im hoping the next update will work out the few bugs and improve the stability of the box.

Not when I tried it. I used a HDMI based TV connect to the Boxee Box and set it to 1080i. When I move it to the old 1080i TV, it still would not sync and when I move it back to the new HDMI TV, it shows 1080P. It sees when it was powered off and on, it will try to auto sync again and when that failed, it defaulted to 1080P.

p.s. If Boxee Box had resolution buttion on the remote or if it has old analong video composite ouput, this problem can be easily worked around but since it has none of them, this one is not suitable for old TV.

I doubt this will work. This one seems to be an extender that allows people to use Cat 5 cable for long distance. It does not seems it can generate EDID info. There is one product called HD Fury II which has electronics built in to generate selectable EDID (i.e. 720P or 1080i etc) but for the price they ask, one would better off to use the money for a new TV.

It does support EDID- HDMI TO DVI OVER CAT5E

If you read the description, you will find out Tiger Direct got it wrong. It is really a DVI to HDMI not HDMI to DVI adapter that is needed here ot connect Boxee Box to DVI TV. Further more, if you read between the line, "EDID feature support on the transmitter" really means it can pass on the EDI info IF the DVI source has it. It does not mean it can generate one. This one is for those PC graphics card with DVI connector to HDMI TV or monitor.

In that case, this will work- Convert HDMI to DVI video and audio. At that price for an adapter, would as well get one of these: Iomega 35039 1 TB ScreenPlay DX HD Media Player or Western Digital WD TV Live Hub 1 TB Media Center.
At that price, you could just replace the TV.

This is exactly it. The issue is when Boxee doesn't receive the EDID info from the TV, instead of respecting the resolution setting in the options, it FORCES itself back to 1080p and stays there, no matter what setting you put in the options.

If Boxee would respect what is set in the options, regardless if it receives EDID info, everything would be fine.

I agreed, and it'll be fewer adapters and cables to buy for the new HDTV too. In the long run, the saving on the new HDTV electricity consumption alone will pay for itself!

This one is the same price as the adapter- Toshiba 32C100U .

I was pointed to a thread that showed how to potentially auto mount multiple shares, but not sure I wanna go the Telnet route just yet.

Well, I did finally get it read multiple share drives at a time. It took some doing tho. First issue was being able to Telnet in just to get a start script added. I had to add a USB thumbdrive so I could load an app to do it.

Once I did that, after trial and error I finally got my mount statements correct in the start script and it now mounts all 3 of my shares at the same time.

I got Yamj set up and now I only have one share defined on the machine that points to Yamj. When I access the share, Yamj starts and all movies are accessible from that movie wall.

It was a PITA to set up but now that I have, it's definitely pretty cool(I use the Zappiti look-a-like skin). The graphical representation of the movie details really look great and look much much better than what Boxee does. But with that said, their interface is definitely sluggish at best. I can zip right along in Boxee, while on the A-200, you really have to take a very methodical approach because the interface just isn't that responsive.

The only other issue I really have with this thing is the TERRIBLE IR recognition it has with it's included remote. It's not really the distance, it's that you have to aim the remote almost DIRECTLY at the thing to get it to see the thing. This more than the fan may justify the A-210 over the A-200.

Anyone know if the IR recognition is better on the A-210 over the A-200?

Chuck, I have a A110 and a A210 and dont have a issue with the remote on either unit. But I do use a Universal Remote on both and the original remote is sitting in a drawer somewhere.

Also, try running Eversion skin with YAMJ, its a Flash based skin and its lightening fast. Its still very early in the beta process, but I think you will like the speed.

Yea, I tried that skin. It is definitely faster but as you said, it's still in beta and has some bugs. I just LOVE the look of the Zappiti skin, plus it it very customizable.

You are right about the bugs, plus it has horrible overscan on my TV. But with a few bug fixes, I could see it becoming my main jukebox in the near future.

I know that this is Boxee vs A210 thread, but I want to throw in the PS3 in a mix. I own both Boxee and PS3, and I used to own numerous of HD media players (XBox 360, Wii, PS3, Roku XDS, RealMate, Boxee Box, Iomega and there are some that my long term memory cannot recall). I'm down to Boxee and PS3 now to save space. When I want to go haywire with HD internet streaming, I use Boxee, and when I want better quality PQ/AQ, I use PS3. PS3 has the best quality of video/audio of all HD media players that I owned.

If you're willing to wait, you might have a chance to buy the ultimate HD media player by D-Link and Iomega soon. It's Boxee+Iomega. It's roughly $349 and you get 2T of storage and gazillion of HD internet streaming apps.
Here is the info on it- Iomega TV with Boxee and Boxee partners with Iomega, NAS device running Boxee is coming.

For now, my wife and kids use Boxee more than anything in the house. For me, I use PS3 the most for its top notch PQ/AQ and the convenience of full size Bluetooth keyboard.
The issue with the PS3 is that it has Cinavia implemented in it. I don't know how that would affect something I ripped from my own DVDs/BluRays.
