Dude - that lens flare is killing me!! eek.gif

Or maybe it's the glare of Total Theater Awesomeness Syndrome that is blinding me?

Definitely one or the other!

Awesome job! cool.gif

Thanks, Hanesian!

Well, Hanes, I'll never be the same after seeing that! eek.gif
post #1144 of 1242
Yeah, Hanes can do that, and he does so on a regular basis.

Ok, after having had the horror of the above photo, I feel compelled to post the following (PG13) photo to get this thread back on track.

Enjoy!

I was thinking of putting a "Stripper pole" in my basement and rented a temp one and had these two over for a demo (came with the rental) and after the demo, decided the pole was totally worth it.

RT, you are currently my favorite AVS member! You should be getting a badge in the mail any day.

BTW, I wonder if that's where Vik got his inspiration for his soffit design rolleyes.gif

Thanks for the compliments, fellas.

I just posted this in the before/after thread and I thought I'd share it here. I'm shocked when I look at these photos from the day we put an offer on the house vs. today:

The day we put an offer on the place in 2011 and January 2013, respectively

When will the 'best of" start-to-finish time lapse video be released?

Inquiring minds want to know! cool.gif

Awesome space! And even my wife said so! wink.gif

Btw, how you like the MacMini+XMBC? It still couldn't bitstream HD audio with the current generation, correct?

I really should get to work on that in my copious spare time! I think I'm at least one video behind anyway.

I thought the same thing. You get so accustomed to the room that it's easy to forget just how plain it was when I got started on this project.

That's quite a compliment, thanks!

I think that Mac Mini + XBMC is an excellent combination but my usage is more limited than most. I get XBMC crashes every now and then during database updates and I wonder if Windows or even OpenELEC wouldn't be a better choice to maximize the quality of the user experience.

As far as I know the HD audio bitstreaming limitation has more to do with OSX than it does with the hardware. Some of the Mac hardware will support it if you install Windows/Linux on the box but I'm not sure if the Mini will do that. For me it's a moot point, sadly, since my Meridian 568.2mm doesn't support HDMI audio anyway. It would if I bought some additional hardware and some weirdo cables blah blah FirstWorldMeridianProblems...

So, in summary,
Mac Mini XBMC
HD Audio bitstreaming = no
HD Audio conversion to 5.1 formats works fine via Toslink

Congratulations, man!  Your room looks amazing.  I love the open feel to it, too.  Nice work!

Aren't you in Raleigh? I would love to come see this beauty one day if you want to have a meet up. What are you using to control your lighting?

Looks great, I had a question, do you have any issues with lighting just using the recessed lights on the edges of the room? I see you have some painted in the center but I was planning on leaving center lights out of my room and just using the soffit. Just wanted some feedback from someone with similar lighting. Thanks!

I'm in Durham. I've been thinking about a meetup. That would be fun.

Lighting control: mostly my right index finger but occasionally thumb. Since there are three switches I also sometimes mash the whole bank of them with my palm. wink.gif

I do have some issues with the lights in my soffits but it has everything to do with room design. The layout of my soffit lights splashes a little too much light onto the screen. If you put them in be very careful about how close they are to the screen and think about buying the light directors/grids/scrims to keep the light off the screen.

I REALLY like the center lights as work lights. Center lights are great for reading at a dim level, vacuuming/cleaning, changing projector lamps, maintenance, etc. I would seriously re-think adding a few for those reasons.

If it's alright, I'd like to add to this comment.  You can also consider putting the back center ceiling lights on a separate dimmer than the front center ceiling lights.  I've done this in two rooms and it works really well for keeping the light off of the screen maintaining little dim lighting on your seating area.  When my kids are watching movies/tv, I always leave the lights on dim in the back because they will start to play around room, climb the couch, make pillow forts, etc.  It's just too dark with no lights on at all.

my intent was more that I didnt want the holes in my ceiling. it was easier to create my sound proof bunker. Ill have the soffit lights on seperate circuits so im not worried about light on the stage. It was more if the sides on high could light up the room for vaccuming, as you said. I was going to use LEDs so they can be really bring, but the light will be coming from the sides. Ill have sconce lights too...

My side lights can light up the room fairly well on their own but keep in mind I have something absurd like 18 of them around the perimeter.
I only have 2 can lights in my back soffit, 3 along each side and 3 above the screen. With all on at 100%, there is plenty of light for clean-up/vacuuming. It's amazing how much light is reflected off the screen.
Amen brothas.

I don't have any lights within 12' of my screen and my place is a CAVE. I cannot stand to watch anything other than like football with the lights one click above completely dark. It negatively impacts image too much for cinema viewing IMO, but for a social thing like football I have a "Dynamic" setting I go-to which blues out the screen balance but has enough pop with a moderately lighted room to still be viewable.

Much also has to do with contrast, black levels, and lumens of the projector........

JD, your room looks awesome man, but one question. Isn't having that liquor so close by a bad idea!?

I just now finished reading all 39 pages! What a great thread. I look forward to watching the videos later. So that answers my question, you haven't done the GE or some other lighting controller yet? I really like the XBMC conversation in here as well. If you do a meetup please let me know.
