The Timelapse Theatre - Planning n' Build Log - Page 27

When I paid for my carpet I told and wrote on the receipt that the would repair and re-paint if there was damage. They were extra careful and there was zero damage.

I have had this done a few times and some installers act like they could care less, but as soon as the accountability is on them to fix it they suddenly can do it without any problem.

Might be worth a mention if you hate painting as much as I do let alone filling dents with wood filler, sanding, painting...

Hmm, good advice. I think we'll continue to paint them but we'll be prepared for touch-up after the carpet goes in.

RT, this has me thinking...do I need to protect al my baseboards and cabinets before my carpeting is being installed? I was thinking of masking off all my wood work with painters tape and even cardboard. Or is this overkill?
I don't think it is overkill. A lot depends on how flexible the backing of your carpet is. The backing of my carpet was incredibly stiff, so that necessitated quite a bit of touching up.

You might want to extend a hand to the installer and see what he thinks. His experience in this regard would be invaluable. If I had known it would have been an issue I would have done things a little differently, but touching up was not too awful bad.

I made a little progress today. As is typical of my vacations I have come down with a cold on the first day. Progress was, naturally, kind of slow. I did manage to squeeze in a day game at the Durham Bulls, though! I wasn't feeling nearly as bad then as I do now.

Nevertheless, we press on.

I pulled up all the carpet and padding yesterday and stuffed it into my wife's car. Today I dropped it off at the recycling center and then spent an hour cleaning my wife's car!

Two of the four columns for the screen wall are built. I'm going to have two more since my screen wall will turn in towards the rack and stop.

More fingerjointed and primed pine. This stuff is pricey but it is SO nice to work with lumber that is dimensioned and straight!

Final coat of pre-hang paint is on the molding that will go at the intersection of soffit and ceiling.

Tomorrow I'll be at TechShop RDU working on the CNC project for the rear wall. That should be photogenic!

And I just realized that I never showed a picture of the floor with the carpet pulled up! Look at that! It sure sounds a whole lot different now!

Also pictured is the wonderful paint job that my wife did on the baseboard. Yeah! That's the same color as the soffits.

The MDF is going to take a little longer. I'm still refining the design. That stuff is harder to make than it looks!

I'm feeling good enough to get out of bed today which, for those keeping score at home, makes Thursday the first day of my "week of vacation to work on the theatre" that I'm actually using. Doc says that I had an asthma attack brought on by severe allergies combined with a bad cold. I'm not convinced but I'm feeling better thanks to a solid night's sleep!

I'm moving about half-speed today but I'm hoping to get the two main posts for the screen wall installed. I might start building the screen too.

Thanks for the comments on the carpet! It feels so nice to have real carpet in here now! The carpet guys did a great job on the stage but they did declare it "a bitch." I tipped them well.
That stage does look really nice along with the rest of the room. Nice carpet choice.

I'm taking a day off next week just for HT build, and I know I'd be very disappointed if I got sick that day. I hope you're feeling better, that sucks.

Thanks, Steve. I'm certainly on the mend now.

I've installed the two goal posts for my screen wall and am starting to fully realize the size of the screen I'm putting in here! I can always get a smaller screen but this thing seems gigantic!

I'm going to build the screen tonight or tomorrow. Projector hang is imminent. My wife has hinted that she will help paint tonight! Woot!

Hopefully, you felt better and had a productive May the Fourth.

Today was a complete waste of time. I might as well have stayed in bed again. What a lousy "vacation" this turned out to be.

If the milk in the cheerios is yellow, DON'T EAT 'EM

J/K. Sorry it didn't go well. I'm guessing there won't be a video?

Oh there will be a video eventually but hardly anything happened this week. I did manage to edit a little footage between coughing fits.

Update time!

I managed to squeeze in a couple hours of work on Friday night and Saturday and built the frame for my screen.

I totally screwed up the measurements the first time I built the frame and had to scrap my first attempt. I'm a bit sore about it since I spent a fair amount of time routing a fancy chamfer on the boards. I screwed up because I kept measuring the outside edge of the board instead of the inside edge. Consequently, when I cut the 45 degree miters the inside was far too small.

So I started over Friday night with fresh lumber (good thing it grows on trees) and made ordinary butt-joints.

After they were cut I drilled pocket holes in the boards and wrapped them in velvet. Don't underestimate the time it takes to do the velvet properly! My hands are still hurting from pulling the velvet tight.

Once they velvet was wrapped I screwed in the pocket screws and installed some steel L brackets.

Sunday morning I attacked that sucker with the staple gun and got the screen installed.

Bottom line: it looks awesome. I'm very pleased with the result of a LOT of labor and $3-400 in materials!

Not bad for home made!

I installed the brackets and hung the JVC RS45 and blammo... we have a theatre.

There are still lots of little things left to do, of course. Wall panels to build, outlets to install, paint for the walls, the wave-wall carving, couch delivery, &c, &c.

Nice job with the screen.

That last pic, even though it's an overall pic, light contaminated, kinda distant, etc., still really has some nice "pop" to the image. Cool stuff, thanks for sharing.

Any chance at some detail pics, examining the screen/velvet transition, corners, etc?

Thanks

Sure, I'll take some this week. Thanks for the compliment.

Minimalist Screen Wall

Hanging the screen and projector before the rest of the room is done.

I thought I'd share a few observations about the subwoofer amp that I bought. Short version: I have mixed feelings.

For those keeping score at home, I have two Lilmike F20 horn subwoofers. I installed into each a Dayton DVC15 driver. These subwoofers are incredible and can deliver high SPL with surprisingly low amounts of power but the performance below 20Hz is fairly poor (by design) so the designer suggests installing a 20Hz high-pass filter.

Enter the Behringer NU1000 DSP amplifier. NicksHitachi shined me onto this amplifier that is inexpensive, light weight, and powerful. What makes this amp unique is that it has a surprisingly powerful DSP complete with a Windows configuration utility (no Mac version as far as I can tell). This amp, however, has an incredibly loud fan that I will have to modify or remove.

It took no time whatsoever to install the HP filter and I'm confident that I'll have no problem tweaking some problem areas in the room's low end.

If Behringer could make this amplifier silent they would have an incredible product!

HAHAHHAHA! Well played!

I thought about you a great deal while I was building that wall. I'd say that it looks rather like yours although it might make you cry upon closer inspection!

Interesting, I picked up the NU3000 when they had that mistake Internet stacked coupon sale. I also have a supply of the MFW15s, enough to build an 8 speaker array in a sealed configuration. (Twin Towers). I know there are some direct swap fans available to tame the beast, please post your efforts.

Any problems with the screen flapping?

I haven't noticed any flapping but I haven't really used the room except for a few demos. The Meridians are about 6-8 inches from the screen. The screen is hung from two 12" z-clips so it's a little floppy at the bottom. I'm going to install a couple of risers to make sure it's precisely plumb and then put a screw into each bottom corner. I was planning to cut a little flap in the velvet to hide the screws.

I'm fairly sure that I can make the amp tolerable by replacing the fan with a 120mm instead of the 85mm that it ships with and some larger heat sinks on the transistors.

Eight MFW15s?!? My room is large but I've been very pleased with the SPL coming out of just two of these F20s. The low-end in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows's Pt. 2 was rattling the room fairly effectively!

Once the couch gets delivered I'm hoping that NicksHitachi and I can do some more REW measurements to figure out the proper plan for treatment. I don't want to just throw absorption at the room until I know what I need to work on.

Great questions! I totally forgot to mention that.

This is a DIY screen made using Seymour AV CenterStage XD acoustically transparent material. The screen is cut at an angle to minimize moire. This screen is 120 x 67.5" (138" diagonal) 16:9.

Dont fret too hard on the fan, even the ep and epx4000 need fan mods. I was amazed at how loud they were but with a quick 10 minute switch out of the fans, I never heard it again easy work around!!!!

Wow, I feel like a real horse's behind . I didn't realize you were sick. I guess that's what I get for checking in after missing a few days and not catching up before posting.

Sorry, dude. On the bright side, you make more progress while sick than most of us do when we're 100%
